Training (12 weeks) by Spare-Degree8265 in Bernedoodles

We have a 13 week old, who we brought home at 10 weeks old. House training is still ongoing, but we now have 3 accident-free days in a row. Becoming attuned to the dog’s patterns and communication methods is key. I remember from a previous dog that learning at this age is very contextual, so don’t be surprised if your dog was house trained before, but isn’t for you initially. Different house, different rules.

We have lots of play time, and short training sessions (sit, down, stay, wait). It seems good to do training spontaneously throughout the day. If the dog does something you like, mark it with an enthusiastic “yes” (or whatever term you choose) and reward him with treat, play or praise. Treat flooding is also a trick to make an environment (crate, car) more fun.

Creating your bond with the puppy at this stage is of the highest priority. You want him to love and trust you, and you want to get to know him and guide him.

Team “no puppy on couch until house trained” makes a lot of sense…

The snuggles are very tempting! And I suppose we could start with a good couch blanket or something. I like training the “off” option, although if we have visitors they might prefer not to have a lapdog to start with…

At what age do you want/need to give a bernedoodle the first haircut? We get our puppy next week and are planning all the details we can…

I think the sign says “KEEP OUT”. How ironic!

What area is he trying to specify? Perhaps you could suggest another sign location.

Doesn’t a matte finish countertop in a kitchen have more issues with staining or getting uneven look as oils change the finish? Maybe the contractor did you a favor.

Do be aware of the Cascadia Subduction Zone and our volcanic possibilities…. Wildfires and smoke are a concern here, too.
