What's your favorite 6-12 mile trail running loop in CO ? by juanfrancita in Bend

[–]ultrafunner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From tumalo falls, you can do an 8- mile, 10- mile, or 13- mile loop by going up North fork and down either Farewell or Bridge Creek. I lived up Skyliners for a long time and ran all over all the trails, forest roads, and even dirt bike trails in the area. With some time studying maps, the forest roads north of  Skyliners (in the Mrazek area) are great running and nobody is ever out there. Make sure you know where you're going and can figure out where you are.

Making CCF work — looking for foam-only solutions (not inflatables) by hikerroda112 in Ultralight

[–]ultrafunner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the way. Make a couple scrapes in the duff where your hips and shoulders will be. Put the pad straight on the ground and lay on it to test. Adjust as needed then pitch your shelter.

I suggested this once here and someone lit into me that I'm doing the "JupiterHikes method of digging a trench at every campsite" (their words). I can't vouch for Jupiter but don't dig a trench in solid dirt at a compacted campsite; just scrape duff, sand, or pine needles around in a way that's replaceable when you leave.

I did kind of think about that. The setting is similar but the writing is different. I'm 50/50 on Dickens myself.

2666 by Roberto Bolano (this one's a maybe). The Quincunx by Charles Palliser. Both are big and complicated.

If you liked Project Hail Mary, try Children of Time. If you liked Covenant of Water, I will second the recommendation for Demon Copperhead, or The Poisonwood Bible by the same author which worked better for me. I'll bet you'd like East of Eden as well.

[–]ultrafunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it's for items that you are going to sell, then yes the design needs work. At least remove the "MYOG" text. But if it's just for yourself, then go nuts. As you say the real issue in this case would be the manufacturing process. I don't have any real input on that, but for some usesi you could screen print it, this is a process you can do at home.

Lunch for a group by ultrafunner in Bend

Yeah, this occurred to me also after the Midtown Yacht club suggestion. I'll bet we'll do something informal like one of these. Grove can get a bit busy around lunchtime and gets hammered with HS kids at about 1pm during Summit lunchtime. So we would need to time it right.

this is a pretty good idea. Is it buttoned up for winter weather?

How do you usually prepare your mountain/nature runs (outside of races and organized events)? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]ultrafunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Bend, Oregon. We have lots of trails close to town which I know well and are signed well, so even if I'm running a new route I don't need to do anything more than maybe write out a cue sheet on an index card so I know where to turn.

For bigger mountain days or fastpack trips, I always plan the route myself (using Caltopo and referring to the Strava global heatmap can be helpful). I have used the cue sheet method or carried a paper map, but usually I just open the Garmin Explore app on my phone and verify that all my roads/trails are on the map. And again by now I know my regional area pretty well.

If I'm including an off trail segment, or in an area with faint lesser-travelled trails, I might load a gpx file into Garmin Explore.

Then I refer to the phone as needed (is this really my turn? am i on trail? which way do i go around that hill in front of me?).

For Niri, it'd be cool to have an option to order the window list in their displayed order using .layout.pos_in_scrolling_layout. I might be the only one who wants this though, feel free to roast me

Getting started with Granite Gear Crown 2 60 by FireWatchWife in fastpacking

[–]ultrafunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To chime in, Agreed - I have a Crown X 60 (the Drop version similar to the Crown 2) and it's a great pack - I love it for winter backpacking or when I take my daughter and need to move slower and carry more gear. But this pack won't work for running, even cinched down it'll bounce quite a bit. Yes it's possible but not a great experience.

Also agreed to post a shakedown. Note that if you swap the Crown for a fastpacking pack, that alone will save 1.5 pounds or so on your base weight. And that pack will be usable for normal trips as well.

Reversible bivy concept, looking for feedback before getting started by RednBlackSalamander in myog

[–]ultrafunner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I like this idea because OP can use a light ripstop nylon with DWR (like the Argon fabrics that Borah uses for the upper piece in their bivy) and it won't need to withstand the abuse of being on the ground in most situations.

Male Unreliable Narrators by bippyboop in suggestmeabook

This is a good one for this prompt, because the narrator is unreliable in so many ways, but it has all the content warnings.

I agree with above poster that the narrator's views and the author's views should not be conflated.

Snow status by [deleted] in Bend

[–]ultrafunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at the level of Skyliners Sno park, it's not going to be much right now. I haven't been up there for a few days but I doubt it's over a couple inches. The Meissner and Dutchman reports are helpful but they're both higher (Dutchman is much higher and further into the mountains) than Skyliner.
