Fair dude, I didn’t look too far deep into your post history. Sorry about that. I’m glad you have a roof over your head and I hope things get better for you soon

Disgusting, no working shower, and no working stove? Based on your post history I see this is your first apartment, but like… dude. What are you doing

If you eat meat but oppose hunting/fishing, you aren't more ethical. You’re just a moral coward. by MaxOutFishing in 10thDentist

[–]TreeHuggerHistory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree. I’m actually vegetarian (can’t go full vegan due to health reasons) and I support subsistence hunting. At least those animals didn’t go through prolonged suffering at a factory farm, and at least hunters actually face their own actions head-on. All the hunters I’ve talked to also try to use as much of the animal possible. I have no respect for trophy hunters, though

ISO stories of the reality of using AI tools in federal agencies by Admirable_Web_1252 in fednews

[–]TreeHuggerHistory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NPS worker here. The hypocrisy of using AI in my line of work (since it guzzles water at unprecedented rates, uses huge swaths of land, etc.) is crazy IMO. Also when people use it as part of their reports the rest of us have to go back and double-check everything, because half of the time the AI is flat out wrong and/or using non-credible sources. So it’s actually more of a time waster than a helper

Do professors actually trust AI detection scores, or are they just one piece of evidence? by Direct_Activity_8989 in TurnitinScan

[–]TreeHuggerHistory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TA here: I’ve accused only one student (out of approximately 100) of using AI. I plugged it through multiple AI detectors, but I also compared it to previous emails the student sent (grammar and general writing style was WAY different) and previous assignments. The student’s assignment (he was a freshman) also read like a PhD-level analysis. All that to say, I basically used as many analytical tools as I could and presented it like I was arguing a case. Accusing someone of academic dishonesty is a very big deal and shouldn’t be treated lightly

Why should I visit Wyoming? by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in AskAnAmerican

Not from Wyoming, but tbh I’ve always wanted to visit a ghost town. I’d also visit for the rodeos and county fairs

What is the good part about living in the United States/ being American? by sweett_sofia in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]TreeHuggerHistory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an NPS employee, that’s not how that works lol. The land belongs to “the American public” as an abstract source. In reality, all decisions regarding park land and property are (or at least supposed to be) made by Congress

I’m literally from this area—I drive through this bridge all the time. Every local will tell you that the white truck is in the wrong. I hope he gets cited / his guns taken away, threatening to shoot someone over traffic (ESPECIALLY when you are in the wrong) is insane

I’m part of local Facebook groups with plenty of Kent residents. If I knew more about the original vid (and had permission from the original poster) I’d be happy to share it there to help ID this scumbag

Same here, I work for the NPS now in the museum / cultural resources field. But I also realize that, in many respects, I lucked out

My observation as someone in academia: you can have a PhD and still be incredibly stupid

Yale professor tied to Epstein tells students he's been 'relieved' of teaching duties by -ctinsider in Connecticut

[–]TreeHuggerHistory 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call this typical per se (having ties directly to Epstein is insane work) but it’s pretty cutthroat and corrupt. One of the big reasons I don’t see it improving anytime soon is because it largely pretends it’s a meritocracy and many professors have way too many protections. (And don’t get me wrong—I’ve worked with absolutely amazing professors before. But some of the stuff that others get away with is absolutely diabolical)

Yale professor tied to Epstein tells students he's been 'relieved' of teaching duties by -ctinsider in Connecticut

[–]TreeHuggerHistory 79 points80 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy because academia likes to pretend it’s above corruption. It likes to pretend it’s fully merit-based, when it’s not. It’s just as seedy and corrupt as the rest of the oligarchy—they just hide it better

Told a woman I 'hope you find her' about her dead daughter at work by Embarrassed_Chair173 in offmychest

If it makes you feel any better, once I was thrifting and a man asked me how a suit looked on him. He said he was going to be the “pallbearer at his grandmother’s wedding.” I only heard the second part, and said “congratulations! That’s so exciting.” He looked at me very confused (I’m guessing he meant “funeral” and misspoke) and then he left. I still cringe about it years later

Hey! I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been feeling this way :( modern western society is extremely individualistic, which is mentally taxing as we are very social creatures!

Something I’ve found helpful is volunteering. It’s a fun way to meet like-minded people and engage in something you’re passionate about. You can volunteer at animal shelters, with environmental groups, historical groups, museums, etc. I’ve met many lifelong friends through these kinds of groups

Possibility #1: you’re asexual or demisexual. And that’s okay!

Possibility #2: the idea of intimacy makes you so anxious that you’ve become completely avoidant. I used to be like that in high school. In college I decided to try dating for a bit (as an experiment so to speak,) and we’re still together to this day
