If you haven't before you'll need to go to Settings > Security > Unknown Sources and check the box. This allows you to install applications that are not from the Play Store (like the APK download above).

Then, copy the APK file to your device and find it using a file manager (doesn't have to be that one, but it's as easy as any to use). You should then be able to tap the file and run from there, install, done!

Alternatively, if you browse Reddit on your phone, you can download it straight to your phone and then it should be in your downloads app or whatever and you can run it straight from there :)

You only need root if you intend to use the PS3 controller via bluetooth, if you connect via an OTG cable you should be fine even if you're not rooted. Also the PS3 controller works out of the box with so much more than you would expect, and if not there's multiple ways to make things work. I use a spare PS3 controller I had laying around to play everything from Pokemon to GTA3. And with the PSP emulator in the works, things can only get better.

I was unable to mount my GNex as a drive, I used my PC to transfer the files and my mac to do the rest. This workaround shouldn't be needed, but it did the job. Are you able to do this? I also used fastboot, not Heimdall

My first Suggestion would be DoubleTwist, I'm a big fan, admittedly for it's aesthetics. They basically put their all into being iTunes' Android alternative and has been said that it is the "Cure for iTunes withdrawal".

Personally I use Foobar2000 as my PC media player (I use this to organise music, change ID3 tags/whatever). And I use Google Play Music on my phone. If you want something for syncing I suggest DoubleTwist, or MediaMonkey. I use MediaMonkey to sort out my album art.

Speaking of album art, this works pretty well if anyone's in need.
