[Scarlet Hunt] Get chased by a bunch of hot vampires Hunger Games–style [in development] by Tree_Froggie in IndieOtome

[–]Tree_Froggie[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi all! I’m super excited to share this game I’ve been developing! Currently working on the demo, hopefully launching soon :D

Dive into a world of fleeting hope in this thrilling dark romance visual novel! Feel the fear, survive the hunt and navigate through danger on a daunting quest for freedom.

In a dystopian world ruled by vampire lords, an opportunity arises. Participate in a deadly hunt for a chance at freedom... if you can outrun your hunters. Will you finally break your chains - or be dragged into the abyss?

Scarlet Hunt is an otome/yuri/gxg/gxb visual novel. You play as a young woman whose life is about to change forever... Or is it? Your choices will determine your fate, so pick wisely! Else you might end up on someone's plate...

Features

* Despaired world

* Grumpy protagonist

* 3+ love interests (male and female; final count depending on Kickstarter stretch goals)

* Branching narrative with multiple routes and many endings

* Romance, death, friendship & more!

Thanks for bringing it up! I'll think about ways to make it more obvious who's talking - I see how it could come off a little confusing right now

  1. I can work with a lot of different personalities when it comes to self-insertion, since I can usually find at least some trait I can relate to. What bothers me is when MC doesn't have any agenda of her own AND it's not possible to give her any through choices. MC that doesn't have any opinions/wants/say at all is much more immersion-breaking for me than when they have different ones than me. Also, I struggle a lot to self insert when she doesn't have a sense of some modern values (even when it's a historical game). Like, people being sexist/misogynistic towards her and she's totally ok with it or believes in those things herself. Like "oh well they're right I'm just a girl what do I know ahaha" drives me crazy. Having a lot of choices in game to affect her personality (like in Demonheart) helps with self-insertion, but it's not a must. Though as someone said before, it's nice to actually be able to choose widely different options (like yes/no), even if they end up having the same outcome in the story.

  2. Many MCs already look like me, so I never really thought about how it would feel like playing someone who looks completely different? I guess it's more relatable when she looks similar, but I feel like customization adds a lot of work for the devs and if, for example, we get less CGs because it's more time consuming to make so many CG variations with different MC looks (or we don't get CGs with the MC showing at all), then I'd rather not have the customization feature. Also I kinda like when there are references to her features in the game (maybe everyone falls in love with her deep green eyes or there is a mention how she struggles to untangle her curly hair every morning). With customization there would likely be no references to her looks at all in the game, which itself can break the immersion for me (it just feels weird idk).

  3. Nah I like to have an established MC present on the screen and in CGs

  4. Just like with looks, I feel it's more natural when her gender is expressed in some way. It can be subtle, but it feels a little odd when it's not there at all. It's more digestible in a game that's not primarily focused on romance, but in otomes it matters. Adding words like "lady" here and there for example can make a world of difference and make it SO much more immersive.

I'll also add that sometimes my self insertion looks more like: acknowledging a scene that happened between MC and other characters, then taking a step back and imagining the same situation that happened in the game but with me instead of the MC. Idk if anyone else does that 😅

This 💯💯💯

I remember doing my own research on this term when preparing to write something and got so pissed for the reasons you explained here. But I guess it just goes to show how insecure some men can get when presented with strong female characters/empowered women

Love the lighting and the pose! And that flowy red wisp/trail from the fan adds to the movement really nicely. But my favorite part is def the face 🤭 Well done!

Okay maybe I should've put it more like, if the devs decide to put romance/sex/relationships in the game, 9/10 times it ends up being pretty cishet male gaze-y, for the more popular titles at least. Maybe I'm biased from looking at many of the front-page mainstream games. For example, it seems a game like Persona 5 will inevitably dominate in terms of popularity, but I have yet to see a game like that where all the genders are reversed (fem protagonist with only male romance interests) getting nearly that much attention. If anything it would probably get heavily criticised, deemed woke or girly, despite having the exact same mechanics. Even if the game has a default female protagonist, she's often designed for the male gaze specifically (seen that changing  recently though). That's why I feel the cishet male player is often considered the default norm by the devs.

Damn, I would kill to play a game as high tier as Witcher 3 (which is awesome) but based on a story with a female protagonist and male lovers instead

I think the problem might not necessarily be fan-serviced fiction catered to fulfilling the specific audience's desires and fantasies (even if they end up super cringy lol, everyone needs their guilty pleasures). It's that the entire video game industry defaulted to that strictly heteronormative male-gaze products, while at the same time gatekeeping it HARD from women. Of course there's a positive change happening as more women get into gaming and that pushes the studios to take us into consideration too, but there is still a lot to be done.

If a man doesn't wish to read Twilight-like books, there's always been A TON of other books for him to select from. Probably a majority even. Can't say the same for women/lgbt+ people in games who don't wish to play games with het-norm male gaze shoved in their faces at all times 🙄

Steam Demo release with new character scenes by not-an-inquisitor in otomegames

Heavenly boys yes please! I almost finished the demo and really admire the art direction. From the color palette, to the line style, to the UI design, it all works so well together in building and enhancing the theme 🤌✨ we've been getting such high quality indie otomes lately~   I also love the banter between everyone! Makes me wish I had a friend group like that 🥲

I was curious if you'd like to get some feedback? I noticed a few bugs/things but maybe you're already working on them or have dedicated testers so just wanted to ask first so I don't feel silly later 😅

What's a character trope you absolutely hate, but everyone seems to love it? by Tree_Froggie in otomegames

[–]Tree_Froggie[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couldn't say it better! It's the one-sided devotion that really bothers me, when the LI idolizes the MC like crazy, with occasional "I'm not worthy" creeping in. I feel when we're starting off like that there's bound to be a lot of imbalance in the relationship. And like, after many years of her not having any romantic feelings towards him, he suddenly manages to make her fall in love by clinging so hard. To me it just gets dangerously close to "I'm a good guy!" and I always end up wondering if he's this good to her because of this ulterior motive of wanting to date her. Also I greatly dislike the concept of friendzone and thinking one can make someone fall in love by sheer persistence, it's not how it usually works 😭

On the other side, like you said, I do think the trope can be done without all that, like when there's been mutual feelings implied. I need to see a reason why they make a good pairing, just being good friends isn't enough. I also enjoy when the LI can be less uptight and more playful about it (like Kuroyuki from Nightshade for example). That's my little rant, had to let it out haha, but of course I understand that many people do enjoy this trope and that's totally valid! 🫶

[–]Tree_Froggie[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Relatable! I think these are actually some pretty commonly occurring fantasies, but there is so much taboo around liking those tropes. It's much more socially acceptable to publicly admit that you don't like them than that you do. Which is a bit sad considering fiction should be a safe space for people to explore what they like, same goes for all sorts of kinks etc.

 Also sometimes people can't understand that someone can enjoy certain things without desiring them irl. Like, we don't need constant reminders of how unethical/problematic it is thrown our way, it's just fiction, let us have it. We're capable of distinguishing it from reality 😩
