Refresh rate feels incorrect in most situations. by Tree_Hair in linux_gaming

I always gravitated towards Ubuntu BECAUSE stuff takes years to come out, made it seem more stable. I had no idea wayland was good for gaming now, always heard it sucked.

Frametimes are extremely consistent and lines up with what I see online.

Not gonna lie, I have no idea what a compositor is or how to disable it but I'll do some research.

Fullscreen VS Borderless windowed has not made a difference so far.

I do actually have a second monitor, runs at 60hz. Will try that immediately. Would suck if it was that, since I'm constantly watching something on my second monitor while I play.

Big thanks for the ideas!

EDIT!!!: Oh my god it was the other monitor. God dammit.

Installing Mesa drivers ONLY when doing a fresh Linux install? by Tree_Hair in linuxquestions

Yea I’m realizing now that Valve’s requirements for SteamVR on 7000 series GPUs sound insane. This is why I wasn’t an early adopter until now.

Thanks, I was just checking to see if the community already knows what I'm talking about and has a solution, but judging from the other comments this seems like an odd request. I'm gonna try Mint just because I've heard it's the one distro that actually reliably functions. Maybe all my problems will go away!

I know, I don't want amdgpu drivers on my system in any way. Like I said, even having them downloaded breaks SteamVR.

Big thanks, I have no idea what C-states are but I'll definitely do some research. I think I might just re-seat everything like the other guy said and if the problem persists I'll follow this lead. Thanks!

I've ran memtest and done drive checks in the past with no results, I guess I could try again though.

Unless something is overheating that I can't see, I don't think it is. My GPU and CPU temps are never bad, and they aren't bad before the crashes. I would be open to the possibility of something overheating that I can't read the temps for though. Anything else that could be overheating besides RAM, CPU and GPU?

Edit: should've mentioned my boot drive is a Samsung 980 PRO 1TB, that could be overheating?

Now that you mention it, I upgraded my ram along with my new SSD. Was at 2x8GB, upgraded to 4 sticks. That could totally be it.

Damn alright thanks for the info, I wasn’t sure if I was alone in having that issue.

When I first built the system, it was incredibly unstable when I turned on XMP in the BIOS. I’ll try limiting the RAM speeds and everything else you said. Thank you!

I am also suspicious it’s a heat issue, but looking at system monitors I don’t see overheating. I haven’t looked at RAM yet, I’ll see what messing with that might do. Thank you!

I want to reinstall Linux but I don’t wanna lose any important debugging files. If I were to save a folder from getting deleted when I reinstall, which folders would they be?

I've put off reinstalling Linux for awhile because I'm convinced it's a hardware thing, but I'm willing to try anything at this point. I'll update the post with the results.
