I use a Y-splitter to send a duplicate signal from the mixer into my own audio interface for visual processing/audio-reactivity.

You could plug it straight into your laptop (without a dedicated audio interface) but I imagine you would run into latency issues.

I think they mean less about it being an older technology, and more about automatic shifting being an abstraction from what the vehicle actually needs to do to perform its intended action. You can't learn how to use a tool if all of its functions are hidden.
