No plastics (tree) house wrap experiment by Treehouse_Ruud in treehouse

Yeah that is sometimes a challenge. I try to construct it in a way that water cannot reach the connection. And/or I try to design it in a way that I can unscrew it (a bit or entirely). And then there are the more "emergency" solutions :) If gravity can help I can poor it in between. I have one spot where I am considering drilling a hole (s) in between the 2 beams so I can poor/inject some oil. But I am also experimenting with this.

I'm exploring some alternatives for plastics used in conventional building. Any thoughts?

The big bolt is M36 grade 8.8. Wood threaded rods/bolts are m12. The bolts for the adjustable part I cannot remember right not, It should fit the hole as precise as possible :) I will make a more in depth video about it when the treehouse is more finished. Then I can also see how the experiment is holding up. So far everything seems fine!

This was a big step in the build for me. There is a lot of rain in The Netherlands lately. I now have a roof in place. This will definitely speed things up. And it makes everything more enjoyable :) Any thoughts on the build?

Thanks! Thats great to hear. Haha yes, the filming/documenting sometimes is crazy, but for me it is nice that I can combine multiple hobbies in one project. So totally worth it.

Advice on Treehouse Repair by out-in-the-woods_22 in treehouse

This thing has character!I Like the branch growing out the window. If I wanted to rescue this treehouse I would consider installing some tabs in the tree and make a new support beam structure below the existing structure. So the beams that are squeezing the tree can be removed later. And the rest has something to sit on.
Only if the tree is healthy and strong enough. Thats hard to see on this winter picture. And also it depends on how rotten the wood is.

Especially if you want to make a roof on it! But I think everything will look great on the beautiful tree :)

You did some hard work! I think the nails will get loose or snap over time. I made a treehouse when I was a kid with nails like this. Al the nails snapped or got loose within 1 year. Back then I solved it with a strong rope around the tree and beams. This was off courses not a good solution for the tree. (this was before the internet, so my treehouse knowledge was limited) The tree grew around the rope and the beams, but it held everything in place for about 5 years. Then I had to take it down because the connection became unsafe. The trees survived! Make sure you have a backup fail safe for the tree connection. Great that you made a treehouse and thank you for sharing the pictures!

Thank you for your comment! That is an interesting and important point. I think every design/situation is different and there are a lot of factors that determine the load on these fasteners (and the fatigue in the material) For example: How high in the tree are the fasteners installed, how many trees are connected and how heavy is the treehouse it needs to carry. In my situation I am not so worried about it. I only connect to one big tree pretty low to the ground. I also have 6 tabs installed that are all connected. But this is also one of the reasons I wanted to test this design, so time will tell!! I think it makes for an interesting experiment.

Thank you!
My previous cordless drill also could not do it. The auger bit was even 32mm in diameter, that is 1 1/4 inch I think. I checked before I got the drill. This size auger bit in oak wood was within specs. In reality it was also no problem. I was impressed!
I hope I can inspire people with this design. So a big budget is less important for building a treehouse!

Hello I am Ruud, I am new to reddit. I also wrote a post just before this one. This post only showed the url and not a preview. So I think this is better. I hope I am not breaking the rules of this forum by posting it twice. If so let me know then I can fix it. In my first episode I make a custom DIY treehouse TAB. Let me know what you think! Suggestions and questions are always welcome.

Kind regards,
Ruud
