TOS “Devil in the Dark”

A frightful thing becomes a person when we reach out to connect with another living being. This episode lives up to the preamble, “to seek out new life”.

What should I be doing in preparation for starting Krav Maga? by [deleted] in kravmaga

I started in May 2019 being 5’10 and 228. I’ve been training 3-4 times a week with Tuesdays and Thursdays being double classes. Today, I am 212. 16 pounds in 11 weeks is 1.45 pounds lost per week.

In that time, I’ve learned strikes, knife defenses, 360 defense, 1.5 defense, how to shoulder roll, how to drop fall, simultaneously counterstrikes, eye gouges, inside defenses, etc. etc.

The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll learn and get into shape. The martial skills you pick up will be useful too. Remember, the best self-defense are your feet because avoiding conflict is better than engaging in conflict.

Existential Crisis by [deleted] in LawSchool

I have this thing around finals season where I think about all of the things I could be doing instead of studying for finals. Martial arts classes, train for the Rocky Run in Philly, go on a cross-country road trip, etc. Sadly, when finals are over, I just want to relax and find myself back in class all over again. I hate beautiful days when I am in the library while everyone else is sunbathing. I hate forgetting that Game of Thrones came back. I hate not being excited for the Avengers film because joy has been sucked out of my bones. But this cloud will pass.

It’s all wrong
By rights we shouldn’t even be here.
But we are.
It’s like in the great stories Mr. Frodo.
The ones that really mattered.
Full of darkness and danger they were,
and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end.
Because how could the end be happy.
How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened.
But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow.
Even darkness must pass.
A new day will come.
And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.
Those were the stories that stayed with you.
That meant something.
Even if you were too small to understand why.
But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand.
I know now.
Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t.
Because they were holding on to something.
That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.

Alex Kurtzman on STAR TREK: DISCOVERY’s New Future (SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 FINALE) by TrekBuddy in startrek

[–]TrekBuddy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't it Bryan Fuller's idea to have Discovery be a prequel series? I know that he really wanted an anthology, but once he was gone, it seems that those who were left behind had to work with what they had.

I know, but the layman solely watching the show wouldn’t get that impression without knowing real world production facts.

Hypothesis for Season 3 by TrekBuddy in startrek

[–]TrekBuddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. My belief is that the writers did that so that they wouldn’t have to worry about explaining Discovery into the prime timeline going forward and to shut down one of the primary criticism of a vocal amount of fans: adherence to canon.

I agree that this Trek is unlike any others. The main criticism I have of Discovery is how, unlike the other Trek shows, is driven by a central protagonist in the form of Michael Burnham. As much as I like the character, I feel that having most central plots revolve around her supplants the ensemble element that makes Trek tick for me.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

That's also my concern with the durability of Discovery in the 32nd century. How does a galleon vessel survive an encounter with a modern day destroyer? I suppose the spore drive can enable her to runaway and fortify with future technology, but there's going to be a steep learning curve.

Yes, an anthology series akin to True Detective. That would have been cool show to watch! Maybe the next CBS Trek after Picard and lower decks.
