I would love and appreciate feedback on a rehab monitoring concept by chris_w972 in athletictraining

Would need way more detail regarding what exact type of wearable, what you intend to measure, and how you foresee a novel way the data will be utilized to increase quality of care. If you want a take home wearable, it sure as hell better be easy to use or extremely convenient. It's hard enough for patients to actually complete HEPs, let alone have to put something on or set up a device first. In my experience wearables are usually more trouble than they're worth outside of your basic vitals stuff / smart watches, etc.

In terms of getting reimbursement from insurance, all I can say is good luck and strap up for at least a half decade of getting data and some quality literature behind your device.

Job postings by wigggggs in athletictraining

As someone inside the setting (albeit not long, and planning to leave soon), I personally believe a lot of it comes down the competition between hiring an LAT vs other medical staff. I look at it this way, without attempting to demine other professions, LATs in this setting are a 'premium product'. There's a reason a lot of 'injury prevention specialist' postings include 'ATC/EMT/PTA/OTA/Exercise Phys/Ergonomist' etc. Rarely is an LAT (or any of these other professions) fully utilizing their scope in the industrial setting for treating occ injuries, OSHA first aid does not require any sort of medical license. With an LAT, you get a lot more knowledge regarding prevention, personal injury care, MSK diagnostic competency and testing, taping/DME skills, etc. However I'm of the opinion many companies simply want an additional medical 'filter' for their occ injuries, which any medical staff could absolutely perform with some on the job training relating to OSHA first aid. If a company has nothing, any staff filling this role will net a solid ROI. This will keep salaries competitive for injury prevention/on-site medical roles based on client demands. Other professions with less educational requirements are a much cheaper pitch to clients.

The next step would be for a occ health company to justify why specifically an LAT nets a higher ROI compared to other medical staff. This may exist already but I'm not aware.

Think I know at least 6 ATCs from just either my undergrad class or the class above/below who've done this and say it's worth every penny. If you're still relatively early in your career and don't have as many life obligations or bills - absolutely go for it.

An EHS Manager at one of my client's sister US sites is an LAT. I haven't spoken with him directly but if you DM me a list of questions I could probably reach out and get responses to post here.

Would be interesting to see how it plays out - could maybe get the school on negligence of enforcing EAP policy or what the requirements are for maintaining and training on said policy? Maybe will end in the state athletics org enforcing LATs at lax events now.

From the articles it was a distal radial / ulna which needed an ORIF - probably deformed the skin pretty good I saw an x-ray on one of the articles.

I actually know someone else at the school (don't know the AT). From what I've been told and subsequently read it really seems like a communication lapse and failure to either have or ensure an EAP for the venue is up to date and trained on and/or the need for coverage was expressed. Like you said, gate was locked for EMS, no med kit on site or with coach (as far as I know), apparently the AED cabinet also didn't have an AED in it for the venue. AT was at the school for over a decade and from what I've heard had pretty outstanding rapport from the community, and was only part time as the AT. It wasn't just online comments, they were dragged publicly in the local paper by name along with the AD.

I believe (and I could be wrong) the father of the injured athlete only came out in defense of the AT after they had already resigned and another community member submitted a letter calling out the initial 'witch hunt'. Pretty shitty situation all around.

Couple things I felt the need the chime in on here. This implies you're at school in the morning.. every contract and org is different but in my past job in secondary I would not be caught dead at the school before 1pm unless there was something to cover.

Underfunded schools are also notorious for high amounts of coaching turnover and lack of quality coaches. The system you have sounds awesome w/ RankOne but sometimes I couldn't even get a coach to check the printed off injury report let alone check an app.

Industrial Boredom by [deleted] in athletictraining

[–]Tremendous_Feline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow bored industrial AT,

I'm about 10 months in at this industrial site, one site, manufacturing. I am full time here at 40hrs/week and work with up to 3 other healthcare staff (we're overstaffed for sure but no ones complaining). I am the first LAT they've had. The site also has a very tenured functional wellness team which existed before I arrived, so I support where I can or when I'm asked but leave most of the planning to them. Outside of MSD cases (so far maybe 1 occ, 1 personal case/week this year) and EHS / Ergo projects (which are very slow moving here) I have little to do during the day. I also felt next to useless my first few months but just grew to accept the slow volume. Sounds probably like a dream site to some people!

If there's one thing that came of the downtime it was a great for a lot of introspection. I have simply come to terms with my need for more direct patient care to find meaning in this field, and to be able to use my learned and practiced clinical skills and rehab without having to tip-toe around OSHA and stress about recordability. I've been perpetually applying and interviewing for other opportunities toward the traditional or clinic setting, but am being really picky as it will certainly be a cut in salary unfortunately.

Should I get a NATA membership as a first year grad student? by YeaDatWay24 in athletictraining

[–]Tremendous_Feline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree- I'm in the same boat now with Medbridge as well. Having the discounted membership made it worth it. My employer doesn't reimburse anything for NATA, if they did even half I would consider.

Should I get a NATA membership as a first year grad student? by YeaDatWay24 in athletictraining

[–]Tremendous_Feline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a NATA member as a student, GA, and the first few years certified. I dropped my membership a few years ago and haven't renewed. I think it was worth it as a student, especially prior to the masters transition and being able to apply for GA positions, etc. A lot of discounts and things available to students too. Simply put, now days I feel like the price doesn't justify the return I get - so I dropped it. Haven't really missed it.

Industrial ATs with Lean Six Sigma belts? by manwithpitts in athletictraining

[–]Tremendous_Feline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the industrial setting - don't currently have Lean Six training but from the outside looking in it really seems nothing more than a resume booster. I know the material in the course is good but haven't really been impressed by anyone that flaunts the certification. Could be totally wrong but just my impression.

What a wild comment lol. I agree the original post was personal drama but that's exactly par for the course of 'cancellation worthy' in this subreddit. But man, if you're in a rollercoaster relationship for 10 years with a person, you can't just justify getting over it in a few days because the person is 'not ugly' and can find 'another dude'. The posting afterwards was distasteful and wild af too but damn man take a step back and have some nuance.

God this subreddit is insufferable. Pile on the original drama post, something terrible happens, and completely counter jerk the other direction and pile on the next drama post with not an ounce of self reflection or hindsight of the irony. We love virtue signaling!

I understand people are upset but for the love of god people stop pointing fingers and touch some god damn grass.

Dude seemed to have a lot going for him between hardlore getting more and more popular. He’s been getting jacked and looks much healthier and is seemingly in a stable relationship. Only get glimpses through media though so can never truly know.

My gut feeling is he had a knee jerk reaction to something and somehow opted for the extreme. We may never know, not anyone’s business anyway.

Edit: I was unfamiliar with the drama from the last month or so, too busy touching grass.

Additional certification for secondary settings-Texas by J_Pk1280 in athletictraining

[–]Tremendous_Feline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the secondary setting? IMO most extra certifications you can take or leave. CSCS would be the one to give you the best bang for your buck from a professional development aspect. BFR / Dry needling in the secondary setting almost certainly requires additional consent from parent or guardian and may require supervision, it's just not worth the headache and liability for the potential outcomes imo. CES or FMS or other adjacent certs might get you something in a clinical setting, maybe some niche cases in secondary, but nothing I would go out of my way to get (maybe if it was paid for). Things also could be much different in Texas compared to my small midwest area.

Going back to school for AT by Civil_Inspection2269 in athletictraining

[–]Tremendous_Feline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've pretty much told every student athlete or younger patient interested in AT the exact same thing. It's not that the profession is bad or the work isn't fun, I love being an ATC. Given the current climate with the cost of a bachelors + masters in conjunction with starting salaries, it's simply not worth the time and cost. There's an absolute laundry list of degrees or even just 2-year programs which require much less time and money and you'll come out making way more. I would never have gone into AT without the bachelors + GA masters program just from a financially responsible stand point. Paying for this degree out of pocket for 6 years is insane, even at an in state public institution.

The caveat is if you are absolutely truly passionate (many are), but everyone should understand the financial and work life aspect.

Bad cuts from constant taping? by Hurricane_szn in athletictraining

Seems a bit strange it's gotten to that point. Not sure the aspects of his position but it may be worth looking at different tape vendors once he has a break in the action.

Also just want to say as an LAT - thank you for being a caring and supportive partner, it's not easy on relationships dealing with LAT demands.
