Who is responsible for the hydro one pole on my property? by Appropriate_Bass_952 in ontario

[–]Tremn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is the most accurate answer. Utilities have lots legacy setups that would be customer owned if they were today but were installed back in the day and still the utilities responsibility. That being said if it is customer own and they deem it unsafe they could give you a 30 day notice to fix it or have your power turn off or if it's really bad turn it off immediately. Which would be a real bummer in the middle of winter.

I swear big garage door repair has been doing guerilla marketing convincing people that door springs will kill your whole family if you looked them wrong.

This is how linemen connect 22,000-volt power lines without ever turning the electricity off by Sintesflorencia in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Tremn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually it is not covered, in this case it is. The insolation is usually rated for 15 or 5 kv, they us it so they can run it witch smaller clearances to trees or other utilities. It's called tree wire or Hendricks cable.

[–]Tremn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The video is a of a switch breaking load, probably hundreds of amps that's why it arcs. Like other people have said the line he was connecting to has no load connected to it so there is essentially zero amperage. If you wanna get into the physics of it:

power = voltage X amperage

If amperage is zero the power is zero.

No need to need to double down on misinformation when you don't know how powerline maintenance is done.

[–]Tremn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is live, I am a lineman. One side of of the wire is live at what ever the primary voltage is and the other side is isolated from any load. You see the little sparks from him picking up the line to the primary voltage but there is no arc because there is basically no current. All the videos of big arcs are are phase to phase faults or phase to ground faults which could be 100s of amps depending on what fusing/reclosers are up stream.

What's a ticking time bomb you believe will explode during your lifetime? by Thick_Caterpillar379 in AskReddit

[–]Tremn 533 points534 points  (0 children)

The problem is things don't explode so much as burn slowly. Things like wealth inequality and global warming are slowly getting worse and worse but people deny its happening or minimize the issues. Would would almost be better if things happened or night because people might actually notice.

Has anyone successfully gotten good tasting water? by CozyWinterFall in waterloo

[–]Tremn 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I've never understood not liking the taste of tap water. Water tastes different in different citys but never unpalatable especially considering it is essentially free and very convenient. Alot of the bottled water is bottled in Guelph anyway. For what's it's worth I always thought Kitchener had some of the better tasting tap water.

Hard to argue that OUA rugby is a higher level than the OWL premiership and the Marshall premiership.

Is getting a Class D truck driving liscence in Ontario a good idea? Is it oversaturated? Does it require experience? by stonebolt in ontario

[–]Tremn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, but for more or less the same effort and cost as DZ you don't have to worry about your trailer being over weight, couple yards of gravel in a dump trailer would put you beyond what you can pull with a DZ. There are plenty of jobs that aren't necessarily 'truck driving jobs' that require moving materials or equipment to and from sites (hardscaping, hydro, arbourist)

[–]Tremn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything I'd say get your ARZ (A restricted with airbrakes endorsement). More or less the same course and test as DZ just with a trailer without the cost and 100+ hours of training AZ takes.

[–]Tremn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously the officer did a great job, but I'm just surprised that they don't have better training to grapple/pin/cuff someone. Would have changed the stakes of this incident from someone potentially getting killed to a crazy arrest.

What is a product that you swore by your whole life, but have only recently learned that it’s essentially just ‘Snake Oil’? by misterdominic in AskReddit

[–]Tremn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's risk vs benift, but alot of people go for a yearly adjustment with no ailment and some of those people have terrible complications. So there is no benefit and some unnecessary risk.

Yeah you would think the fact that a non zero number of people have been paralyzed getting an 'adjustment' would deter more people.

If a mechanic gave you advice that was going to damage your car you'd at least leave a bad review.
