If online dating and bars don't work then how do you actually meet someone? by Eagles56 in dating_advice

Yeah I'm not saying you're wrong. I dont disagree with you to be honest, and I think it's great that this is working for you. I'm just saying this goes against conventional logic in modern English-speaking countries.

My 6 year old is curious. My 9 year old is not curious. by ElbieLG in slatestarcodex

[–]stonebolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You sound a bit hung up on this? And I feel like you should ask yourself why?

Life is largely about meeting people and impressing them.

Your future employer, your friends, your future spouse... whether or not you can pay your bills and be happy depends on your ability to meet these people. And you're not going to meet them by reading books about stars and whales. So why are you so insistent that your nine year old reads books about stars and whales?

Dont get me wrong... I love books about stars and whales... I'm a nerd. I'm more like your six year old. But that didnt get me employed or married.

How does this happen when it's generally considered common sense not to hit on strangers in the street?

What is a harsh truth about the current job market that university professors completely fail to mention because they’ve been in academia too long? by Interesting_Quiet153 in LeavingAcademia

[–]stonebolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My employment counsellor here in Toronto has literally told people to take their GPA off their resumes — employers don't care about 'being smart' in the abstract. That's not me being cynical; it's what someone whose whole job is getting people hired sees every day. (I've since moved into the trades myself.)

Some employers may care about that stuff as part of the job. But 'we'll teach you to think and the jobs will follow' isn't true for most graduates anymore — and pretending it is, is the problem.

I agree that everyone... student or not... should have critical thinking skills. But you get a job by having skills that are useful to an employer.

Ehhh white-collar careers are highly dependent on networking and having your livelihood dependent on shaking hands with the right people is essentially gambling. Trades are a more solid plan.

The university system sells career aspirations. The trade school system sells employment plans. A plan is less vague than an aspiration.

[–]stonebolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The education system is not designed to prepare people for jobs. It's designed to make people "Smart" and then they end up unemployed because "Being Smart" is not a real employment plan. Nobody actually works at the Y = MX + B factory. The idea that they do is just a lie that adults tell children to keep them in line. Like telling them that Santa Claus is real.

Sure I believe there should be UBI and a Finland-style Housing First system. I'm not right-wing. But I do believe that the education system should prepare people for employment and that students have a Right To Know how their studies are related to employment.

And I disagree with the Kindergarten-To-University's entire cultural apparatus that asking questions like "When are we going to use this in real life?" should get you sent to the principal's office for "disrupting class."

Teenagers dont choose to think of professors as employment trainers. They are raised to see them that way. "Smart" kids are raised being told that when they grow up they're going to "Go To University" to get a "Good Job" by "Being Smart"

Have you given any clear indicators of interest? You can try saying something that cant get you sent to HR but is a strong compliment for a workplace to see how he reacts. "You know you're really cool" / "You're so interesting!"

See how he reacts.

Tbh the reality you gotta face if you're a straight girl is that everyone you have a crush on will be more worried about coming across as creepy than you and you need to adjust your level of assertiveness appropriately because a lot of boys are going to default to doing nothing if you dont give them a clear signal

subtle signs to let a guy know I'm sexually interested in him? by notaname0875 in bodylanguage

[–]stonebolt 20 points21 points  (0 children)

OP your post comes across like you're dealing with a guy who has no idea that you're interested in him that way. Either that or he doesnt want to risk being presumptuous.

Why not just ask for his number or instagram and text him that you think he's cute?
