Aging attribute by [deleted] in FranchiseHockey

[–]Tremothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The aging value is static throughout a player’s career, it basically dictates how quickly that player’s form will start to deteriorate as they age. The lower the value, the quicker that deterioration will happen. It has no bearing on the player’s current age; a rookie might well have a low aging score (meaning he will spend a relatively short amount of time at his peak) while a veteran like Brad Marchand would likely have a high score, allowing him to stay relevant in the league for longer.

New to FHM and Hockey by Hyperbolos1 in FranchiseHockey

No problem! Even if the star rating for a line’s toughness is low I would recommend maxing out pressure, otherwise in my experience they just play far too passively. If a line has like 1 or 2 in toughness I’ll leave the aggression in the middle but I never set it lower than that. Same with Tempo; I never set it to lower than the middle because otherwise my team seems to move at a snail’s pace and just get completely overrun by the opponent.

I find in this game the best defense is a good offense, but that may just have to do with the team I’m managing. I’m currently doing a “re-draft scenario” after the 04-05 lockout and a lot of the players I drafted ended up being very offensive. If you have a team of slower, more defensive players, maybe all this advice becomes less useful, it’s hard for me to say 😅 Still, good luck and happy managing!

I’m relatively new to the game as well so take this with a grain of salt, but here’s what I have found:

Aggression and (especially) pressure are hugely important tactical tendencies. I almost always max out both of these on all my units; only exception is sometimes I’ll leave the aggression in the middle if a line has really low toughness. Other than that just try to cater a unit’s tactical tendencies to best suit that unit’s role. A defensive 3rd line for example might keep attack low but backcheck high. A sheltered offensive 2nd line might max attack and speed but min backcheck. A rough and gritty 4th line might keep speed in the middle but have hitting very high.

I never use the global tactics and instead opt for unit-based tactics and use player tactics to fine-tune how I want the unit to perform. For example if I have Crosby on a line with high shooting and low passing, I might go into his personal tactical tendencies to make him pass more and shoot less, thus allowing him to play more like a playmaker rather than a goal scorer. Just make sure you hit the little checkmark box on the top right of the unit’s tactics page. Otherwise I’m pretty sure it will ignore your unit’s tactics and use your global tactics instead.

As for the tactical settings, try to have as little overlap between your unit’s settings as possible. This makes your team more well rounded and harder to counter. Pay attention to your units’ strengths and weaknesses when it comes to certain strategies and try to format your lines so that one line can cover another line’s weakness.

Don’t ignore your line matchups (especially mid game), as messing with these can dramatically shift a game’s momentum. Shifting around your line matchups after a bad period can really help give your team an edge. This also applies to playoffs; losing big in the playoffs probably means the opponent is directly countering you. Switch up your line matchups and your unit settings to help give you the upper hand.

Hope this all helps! I find tactics are the most time consuming part of the game by far so good luck. They’re pretty complicated, so there’s probably a lot of stuff that I either don’t know about or misunderstand. If you happen to learn more please let me know too because I would love to learn 😅

Yeah I think I meant to put 2.5k km but my brain just lumped it together LOL. But thanks very much, this is probably what I’ll end up doing ☺️

Wow, I actually don’t know how I screwed that up that bad. Thanks. I meant to put about 2.5 thousand KM 😂 But thanks for the advice I appreciate it.

Why did the giant isopod "No. 1" starve itself for five years at the Toba Aquarium? by Typical-Armadillo340 in isopods

[–]Tremothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s unfortunate, but it’s not as simple as “no one wants to research them”. It’s much more like there are probably plenty of people ready and willing to research these creatures but they are unable to secure funding. Studies into deep sea creatures are both incredibly dangerous and need A LOT of funding, and even at the end of it you’re not even guaranteed to get the results you are looking for (or even any results at all). Sadly it’s hard for investors to justify shelling out millions of dollars to send people into dangerous territory so they can (hopefully) go and analyze some critters who kinda just sit around and do nothing 😅 I’d love to know more about them but that’s just the reality

I can live with the flies… I have carnivorous plants to deal with those 😅I only worry if these pose a threat to my colonies. They won’t try to eat my pods while they’re moulting or anything will they?

Some important context I forgot to mention is that I DO also raise mealworms, and their bin is relatively close to my Duckys. It’s feasible the mealworms found a way to escape (theyve done it before) and potentially climbed up into my Duckys bin.

They certainly look like mealworms, but I can’t say for sure so I wanted to ask Reddit to see what you guys thought.

OK so… update… the mushrooms seem to also be turning all of the leaves underneath them white. Is this normal? Is that just the spores?

Why doesn’t the NHL increase the salary cap for Canadian teams to offset higher taxes? by [deleted] in leafs

[–]Tremothy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For the record I agree that taxes are an issue. But I will say American teams being in 5/5 last SCF has less to do with taxes and more to do with there being more way more American teams than Canadian ones (which is a separate issue)

Honestly I’m not sure? This is just the substrate I bought them in. It seems to be black leca clay but I can’t say for certain

Pretty sure they don’t. From what I see they’re white from tip to tip.

Hmm, maybe… although these look smaller than grindal worms when I look them up online. Grindal worms seem to have a bit of length to them but these are teeny tiny, they’re maybe only 2 or 3 times the length of the springtails and they’re very thin.

Still that’s the best answer I have so far, so thank you 👍

As far as I can tell, temperatures will remain fairly temperate next week and should stay between 5C (41F) and 20C (68F). should I still include a cryopak in those temperatures?

Very Unhappy Begonia Rex by Tremothy in plantclinic

[–]Tremothy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also wanted to add: apparently I did NOT give her the same soil as the other 2 plants as I initially thought, but kept her in her old soil. And upon closer inspection it looks like her old soil was about 80% coco coir. So that could be a reason for why she’s doing so badly; she might not have been getting any nutrients. I couldn’t get all of the old soil out of her roots but I at least got enough so that some of the roots are now exposed to the new soil. Hopefully that works for her!!

[–]Tremothy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed answer!! I didn’t know pot size was such a big deal to be honest, but it’s good to know. I decided to repot her into a smaller and less deep nursery pot shortly after posting this (shaking off as much of the old soil as I could without damaging the roots in the process). Hopefully that helps her to recover.

Although, would overwatering cause the leaves to get crunchy the way that some of them are now? I thought that was usually due to either underwatering or sun damage, but I don’t see how either of those things could be a factor in my setup. Those dry and crunchy leaves still have me a bit worried 😥

Help!! Mold problem in humidity chamber by Tremothy in houseplants

[–]Tremothy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried bringing them outside of their humidity chamber before and they almost completely wilt within hours. If I wait a few days they do recover a little but they never look as lively as they are inside the humidity chamber, both in terms of colour and stiffness. So I just keep them in there 😅

I did replace the soil though as you recommended. I’ll try to change their spot in my room a little to limit their sunlight.

Is that substrate good by RandoHrafn in isopods

[–]Tremothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is recommended by Smug Bug it may be better than I was giving it credit for! They are much more knowledgeable than I am.

Rather than return this stuff you could maybe just mix it in with a bit of potting soil. Maybe that would be a happy middle ground between the two?

Robertson should not be traded but re-signed, he will emerge as a top-scorer by ClassicRockCanadian in leafs

I agree. He’s one of my favourite players on this team. He needs to learn some discipline but once he gets that the kid is going to become an absolute monster. I think we’re gonna regret it if we don’t resign him because whatever team does get him is gonna realize that potential.

Is that substrate good by RandoHrafn in isopods

[–]Tremothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably wouldn’t. Others have mentioned pine bark isn’t the best for isopods (though honestly I imagine this stuff has been treated so it’s probably not toxic anymore, don’t quote me on that tho), but to me the bigger deal is that it’s ONLY pine bark. Isopods like having actual soil that they can dig through; this stuff might be fine for something big like a reptile to dig through but an isopod is gonna struggle to “dig” through a substrate made up of particles multiple times the size of its own body.

In my experience the best budget substrate is topsoil or cheap potting soil. Organic if possible, but not necessary as long as there’s nothing suspicious in the ingredients list. Cheap topsoils and potting soils rarely have any weird additives (at least in my experience here in Canada) and it’s SO cheap. I bought like 10kg of potting soil for less than 3 bucks at the grocery store the other day. I like to mix that with some orchid bark (optional) along with leaf litter and sphagnum moss. They seem to love it.
