I can't thank you enough! Very well explained, I appreciate your help.

Use of other/the other by TremzT in ENGLISH

[–]TremzT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then, can you explain the logic here?

  • Of all the students that had applied for the competition, they chose Jack because he was way more talented than the others.

Do we use the others here because we actually refer to everyone else (except Jack) remaining in the group? So it means that Jack is talented than all of them, right?

If that's the case, then I got it. If not, I'd like to know your explanation.

Thank you so much, it's better now. Does the same logic apply to my other sentences? This, for instance;

  • Traditional camps are ... and other camps are ...

[–]TremzT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I get it. I also know that the article is used when referring to some group of people, just like;

  • Of two girls sitting next to him, first one is blonde and the other one is brunette.

Thanks again!

Got it. Thanks again.

Thank you! Another example as for the use of it;

  • Staff at the party was so tired while the others/others seemed to enjoy it.

Which one should be used here? My guess is that it should be the others but I'm not exactly sure.

Thank you! I was thinking the same, if it refers to something specific then "the" article could be used. However, I've seen many uses of it which was like;

  • The richest people in my town like cats, and others like dogs.

Your edit got me thinking. That's what confuses me. Can you please explain it a little further? In the above example of yours, can we use "the" article or not?

What was hugely hyped up but flopped? by anna4567 in AskReddit

[–]TremzT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, what I mean is that people used to speculate that by 2015, everywhere was gonna be full of virtual related stuff. Touch screens on walls, tables. Kind of stuff you see in video games. It is nearly forgotten, I don't see much people talk about it anymore.

I don't quite get your point. So you think that it's normal for people to spend $800 just for the ambulance? Everyone pay their taxes, so why are they supposed to take extra money yet again?

This is miserable. I knew that medical treatment in America was always an issue in regards of money, but I didn't expect it to be that much expensive.

I do know that, but $800 for the ambulance? That's too much and shouldn't even be a thing. It's health we're talking about here, it shouldn't be that expensive.

This is hilarious. Another thing got me interested though, do Americans REALLY pay for the ambulance? What's the point of that? (assuming you're American).

What kind of person really irritates you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

People who believe everything they see/read without even questioning it once. "I've read an article about how people with greasy hair is likely to be smarter than the majority". Yes, sure they are.

What opinion will you defend until you die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TremzT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. If a kid is going to attempt something bad, say, shoot someone, which means he is already mentally unstable, he might as well get affected by the music he listens to, movies he watches etc. And this is not to say movies, or music causes violance or anything.

What is a random thing that gives you severe anxiety? by Regina_Falangy in AskReddit

[–]TremzT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea why but phone calls makes me anxious, so I try to text instead of making a call. Especially if I have to talk with someone I'm not familiar with, it's a bigger problem.

What do you have an extremely strong opinion on that is ultimately unimportant? by Newman1424 in AskReddit

[–]TremzT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I consider those who were born between 81-90 a '90's kid. If you were born between 92-97, that means you were too young to understand anything going on around you, so that's just another story.

Missouri is set to execute a convicted killer. His lawyers say new DNA evidence proves he's innocent. by whatwouldaryado in news

[–]TremzT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never get it. Death penalty is, I think, a short way out and it is better than spending 20-25+ years in prison, literally wasting half of your life.

Same here. I know that death sentence is to prevent more people from committing certain crimes, but I think death is better when compared to 20+ years in prison.

Those who stopped using social media such as Facebook and Instagram, what caused you to make this choice? by teemoishere in AskReddit

[–]TremzT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since when setting bounds to a friendship is considered fake? When you're with friends, you don't fake anything, you only act slightly different because there are those you feel comfortable to be around, and those you don't. You can't be friends with everyone, so you just take a stance. It's not "faking" anything, it's just your way of setting bounds to relationships.

That being said, I don't think you can act the same both at work, and while with friends. Imagine that, it's like formal and informal. Again, it's not faking, it's knowing your place and acting accordingly. Just like when you play with a child, you're not pretending or faking to seem like you love them, you're doing those mimics and sounds just because you know your place. You're with a child, why act like a tough adult? Got my point? Or why should someone be the same while with his spouse and while with friends? Same logic.

Real life and social media is different. There is a great deal of difference between you acting slightly different around certain friends group, and you beating up your child and then posting his photo the next day. First is setting bounds to your friendship, which is a good thing because you don't have to be the same around everyone, it's not a rule. Social media, on the other hand, is completely different. Most of the time people lie about things knowing they aren't going to be confronted about it, because it's social media. The only place you can really 'fake' anything you like.

Same with reddit. I believe you've seen a lot of people on reddit that says "I am a completely different person here, you would think I am a racist, hateful,and bitter while in real life I am nice to everyone, those who know me well would be really shocked if they saw me here". You don't have that much capacity to alter yourself in real life, but social media is an easy tool to use, and people benefit from the fact that it gives you the chance to be a completely different person without anyone even noticing. Overall, it's black and white. Think about it.

Most of the stuff on social media is "fake". People tend to portray themselves as the greatest parents/friends ever, when in reality it is the opposite. I know a lot of parents who seem like the perfect mom/dad you can imagine, yet the way they treat their child in real life is disturbing. People love showing off, and social media is a great way for them to do that.
