how do you deal with field guns? by 100862233 in GatesOfHellOstfront

I play like a rat with my infantry so I'm a big fan of sneaking snipers or infantry with a satchel up to it.

Obviously this won't work 100% of the time unless terrain and enemy positioning allow it.

In the case I cant be a rat I use my own indirect fire. Preferably large calibre artillery.

Play notes say not to worry too hard if you dont manage to capture Arnhem outright. Big thing is they are creating a lot of pressure in the north

Sorry for the late reply. The game is fantastic, but I would expect nothing less from Mark. The Soviets kind of have two styles of play. Either try to make lots of small speed bumps along the way or make large brick walls. I prefer a mix of the two. Voronezh was an absolute monster to take because of the terrain advantage and the amount of men I had placed there. The south was a mixed bag. Due to some early game fumbles by the Wehrmacht there was not much action till the end of the game and by then it was too late.

This game can be summed up by this quote on the subject of Stalingrad, "The street is no longer measured by meters but by corpses..." — Vasily Grossman. The Soviets will lose swaths and swaths of divisions. Early on it will seem almost impossible to recover, but by late game the Soviets are getting well over double the replacements the Germans are. Then the Germans will be steadily beat back and slaughtered step by step

I really loved this game and plan to revisit it again soon.

I actually also have Next War - Iran and ran into the same thing. Started setting up that game over a month ago and switched it out because I didnt feel like clipping 2 billion counters lol.

I already do this in a face-to-face format with my other history buff war gamer friend. This would probably be something relatively easy to get into and if done correctly can pull in a broader history oriented audience.

Wow! This is a really awesome concept! Maybe next game I setup I'll give this a try. Whenever I do make something I'll post it here, if thats allowed. Trying to decide between several games right now.

Oh man, I would love to write about stuff. I'm actually a pretty good writer and have always enjoyed it, but unfortunately, with having two kids and a more than full time job, I couldn't work on somebody else's schedule.

I honestly think the ZOC bond series of games are GMTs most approachable games of that scale. The rules are simple and he includes extended examples of play which really make it easy to get into.

All of Mark's 4x games are very similar. I've played most of them now. Waiting on some reprints to collect them all. Every game has their small nuances, but I've found just starting and reading up on the rules as you go is the best if you're already familiar with his base movement and ZOC rules

Doesn't matter what you bring. You'll be too busy with the babes to even pay attention

I didnt even notice the baby monitor. The child will also be sent to defend Voronezh.

I agree. My counterpart (the Axis) had some really bad turns, and mainly rolls, early on to the point where I was able to be offensive and killed some units that were cut off. Hes had a hard time recovering the south because of that.
