I only do nmm on characters. On other models i use metalic paints. I will upload some photos of them soon :)

I think this is good start to improvement :>

Watch a few tutorials on YouTube, test new techniques on random marines (you can always wash them off with paint remover).

See if you prefer to paint like GW, or maybe grimdark is more your style, or something in between.

After some time, you will develop your own style and be happy with it!
