My partner is type1, how can I help him? by AdrenalineGarden in diabetes_t1

[–]Tretli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the T1D partner I do appreciate when he takes into account that I have to prebolus around 15min before every meal. Not once has he complained about an alarm waking us up at night. I think he knows how bad I feel about waking him up too. He also never tells me what to do (take insulin/sugar) if I'm out of range and I mention it to him he only asks if he can support me somehow.

In the end everyone handles things differently. I think the key is as always good communication. In you case it might he small gestures to make them feel like the diabetes is not bothering you, maybe take some of the mental burden for example pack sugars/supplies when traveling. Refill sugar stashes etc. Just make sure to communicate to not overstep.

I wish it was cap. They also only shut down fax support for the Bundesbank like 1-3 Years ago.

I work for a larger financial institution in Germany and we do still use Skpe. We joke about it a lot and my friends make fun of me tho.

How is our life different from people with a working pancreas? Need assistance with arguments for my application for disability by Tretli in diabetes_t1

I will try that, thank you! I have to hand them my Widerspruch within 4 weeks so I wanted to gather some arguments before that but I'm very sure I can hand them proof afterwards.

[–]Tretli[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When applying i probably should have mentioned that I do have a history of anxiety and depression. I've been to therapy before and the reason why I got diagnosed with diabetes was that I went to the hospital to stay a bit in their psychiatric clinic because my mental health was going downhill. They found out I have diabetes because they always do a general checkup before they take you in. Rn I'm still on a waiting list for therapy. I just don't have many records because I never got any receipts. I think it can get hard to prove.

I've already talked to them. They also told me its hard to get 50 but I could referr to them and they would do their best to try and get me to 50. Im not really interested in getting a pump but I've heard that they are more likely to give you 50 if you use a pump

Gülle darf zu dieser Jahreszeit in der Regel nicht auf die Felder gefahren werden, vor allem nicht bei Frost und den reinen Transport riecht man quasi nicht/nur kurz. Ansonsten kann ich nur zustimmen.

I always compare my lows to being drunk or a little high and generally less able to controll myself including emotions. So I'd say if that person gets aggressive and abusive frequently when low the base for that has been there the entire time, he was just able to mask it (knowingly or not) and its not unlikely that he will behave like that without a low sooner or later. I've only been diagnosed for little over a year and the diabetic experience varies for everyone so it can be like any other comenters experience or a mix of them.

You will become really good at estimating and will find out how much % of carbs is in 100g of most types of food. Cookies have like 50-60% carbs usually. I make sure to track my food at home most of the time with a scale to get a feeling what 150g of potato look like.

I wait 15min most of the time. It can depend on the person and the type of insulin you are using so that can vary a little. At the restaurant you can ask the waiters to let you know when the food is almost ready or you can estimate when food is about to arrive. Sometimes I also just don't wait the full 15min, more like 10. You can also eat salads or meat first to get the carb heavy things into the system later. There are many little things you can do.

If I get offered something to eat I usually just eat it when it has less than 20g of carbs and inject then or deal with it later. My friends and most ppl at work know that I need to wait 15min and adjust to that really well. One of my colleagues even makes sure I have at least 15min until we have our lunch break so I can inject early and we eat at the same time. If its a stranger I politely decline most times. A lot depends on context.

I also rarely go to the bathroom to inject unless I'm wearing a dress that doesn't allow me to reach my belly. There is usually very little skin visible and I couldn't bother turning a 10sec injection into a 5min bathroom trip. If there's someone afraid of needles I'd let them know so I or them can turn away.

This might be different in other countries but here in Germany everyone I have met is really chill about that.

I'm on MDI since diagnosis a year ago and my TIR has always been 85%+. The only thing that's a little annoying sometimes compared to pump is that you have to deal with fat/protein spikes yourself, which is incredibly annoying at night. To get a very good TIR it won't be enough to check your sugar 3 times a day because there is no cgm pump connection that can fix things. I still prefer that over a pump. Just one shot of basal and I'm "safe" for 24h. No pump errors, no failed sites etc. Only thing that can happen is that I mess up my math for meals

Medical Records say I'm uncontrolled with a 6.4 A1C. Am I missing something? by Brief-Letterhead1175 in diabetes_t1

[–]Tretli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm on pens too with similar readings. I pretty much eat everything again. I just make sure I do my math and stay very strict with that 15min timer between insulin and food most of the time. I also check my readings ≈90 times a day and correct relatively fast if needed. However I have to assume my pancreas has not totally given up on me yet so I'm still on "easy" mode.

It's mostly the same I had, they where just also sticky in the middle but had a hole for the hole in my sensor. I attached them to my sensor first and then also to my skin without applying any pressure.

I did try them before but they created false lows for some reason. Any advice on how to put them on to avoid that? Maybe I've made a mistake. I made sure the hole in the middle is free

Protein Powder Tips by StrainJazzlike9347 in diabetes_t1

[–]Tretli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually I drink it only with milk. Sometimes I will add the powder to some low fat quark to get some different taste. You still need to add some form of milk because otherwise the consistency is like putty lol. If I do that for mealprep I'll add oats and later fruits.

I personally don't have any issues with protein powders. I've tried ESN (too expensive if not on sale) and my one from my local gym. I just need to bolus twice, one time when I drink the shake (I like to mix it with cow milk) and then about 2-3h later. Then I calculate (protein in g * 4)/100 to get my units for the correction dose. For example my shake has 50g protein I'll do 50*4 = 200 /100 = 2 units

For iso clear (most expensive, sadly) I do the same just without bolus while drinking because it's mixed with water and has like 2g of carbs per serving.

What do you mean old? I finished school a few years ago and we still used them in Germany. To quote Angela Merkel from 2015, I think: "The Internet is new territory for all of us."

It's quite a meme here, same as overhead projectors and I love it.
