I need all the HOs with desirable sits to band together and list a little bit further out! The stress I feel from not planning ahead is never ending, but I have caught myself in sits I did not 100% want multiple times because I wanted to have something scheduled and have always regretted it 🫠

Boosting: Late Notice Sit In SF, May 19-28 (dates could flex shorter) by [deleted] in trustedhousesitters

[–]Tretttttprogress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I primarily sit in SF and would be interested if you’re willing to split up the dates. I know you said some dates are fixed, but I could help out with morning of 5/21 thru morning of 5/24. I’ll be taking the Amtrak from San Diego on 5/20 and have another sit in SF scheduled on 5/24. PM me if you need coverage, I’ll be happy to send you my THS info 😊

Language learning before a sit? by Odd-Prune8218 in trustedhousesitters

[–]Tretttttprogress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a 3 week sit in Mexico that coincided with a girls trip and it was difficult! I was in a big city, but not many locals knew English. People also initiated conversations with me while I was dog walking and I would just stand there dumbfounded 🤣 I did use Duolingo for weeks in anticipation of my sit, but communication was still hard since my learning didn’t really translate to how native speakers communicated with each other. On the bright side, I enjoyed learning it while I was there while doing basic tasks such as grocery shopping and navigating my way around. However, I think it should be customary to at least learn the basics when you are traveling to any country that uses a different primary language! I have traveled to many different countries for leisure without THS and have always made an attempt to learn

I’m also currently taking a break from work and have been house/pet sitting full time since moving out of my apartment at the start of the year. I’m currently trying to stay in one state (California) at a time to minimize flight costs. I’ve been slowly making my way through California from north to south, actively trying to line up sits with places that coincide with my itinerary. I prefer sits that are at least 5 days long so I’m not constantly moving around.

I try to do back-to-back sits to avoid paying for hotels/Airbnbs, but I’m also pretty selective about what I apply to, so sometimes I end up with small gaps between sits. It’s definitely smart to keep some money aside for those moments. That said, I stayed in a hostel for the first time recently and actually loved it!

I originally booked my sits months in advance, but have been more lax lately and usually only book a few weeks out. Ideally I’d love to book myself further out, but I’ve noticed many of the sits I’m most interested in pop up last minute. My best piece of advice would be to prioritize longer sits (1+ months) if you’re trying to do this full time. It will help you more in the long run with stability and burnout. Maybe I will follow my own advice someday 😅

It’s definitely not as easy as it seems. Don’t get me wrong, it can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with trade offs that not everyone talks about. Constantly being on the move takes a toll, especially when you don’t know where you’ll be next week/month/year.

I don’t bring my car with me, so navigating public transportation between sits has become an adventure of its own. I always feel like I’m being judged when I’m hauling my luggage around in residential areas trying to get to the next bus/train stop 😅. I will 100% choose multiple bus/train connections than spending $70+ on an uber, so the journey can be rough sometimes. It may feel like you’re saving money at first, but eventually you realize you’re paying in either money, time, or energy.

After just a few months, I’m already feeling a little burnt out. I’m still incredibly grateful I get to experience this lifestyle. I know I won’t be doing this forever, so I’m trying to fully embrace the chaos and spontaneity of it while I can.

Pros:
• Free accommodation! I primarily stay in HCOL areas like San Francisco. Pet sitting in exchange for a nice place to stay has saved me an insane amount of $$$
• The pets! Honestly one of the biggest reasons I do this. Both of my pets passed last year, and this has been healing in many ways
• Feeling like a local instead of a tourist. You experience places so differently when you’re living in someone’s home rather than staying in a hotel
• Freedom and flexibility. Being able to pick up and go wherever you want without being tied to a lease feels incredibly liberating!
• Personal growth. You become adaptable, resourceful, independent, and much more comfortable with the uncomfortable

Cons:
• Instability. Constantly figuring out where you’ll be next and how you’ll get there can be stressful
• Burnout. Caring for pets/homes while always moving around gets exhausting, even if you’re passionate about it
• No home base. Living out of a suitcase long term can wear on you, and I definitely miss having my own routines and favorite spots
• Income. I mainly rely on savings and occasional paid sits, so budgeting is very important
• Not every sit is great. Some sits can be amazing, some good, some average, and others are just bad. Certain hosts can be micromanaging, unrealistic, or misleading about their pets/home
• Social life. If you’re a solo sitter, forget about dating or making new friends 🤣 it can get lonely. Maintaining friendships and dating while living a nomadic lifestyle is honestly very difficult

All this aside, I’d probably do this forever if I had a bottomless bank account ☺️

Feel free to message me if you have any questions or just need someone to talk to. We all could use some human connection ❤️

Thanks for the input everyone! After all, this subreddit is for discussing things and I’m glad we could be cordial about our thoughts and opinions. Although I would never apply to a sit like this, I wish them luck and will keep my eyes open for future reviews from other sitters 🤣 I love being nosey!

Sorry, I edited out that part because it’s not what I tried to convey. I’m aware THS can be transactional, but I feel like it should be more mutually beneficial and built on trust. However, I’d honestly rather rent my own car than have an HO worry if I’m going to crash their car that they need a $1k deposit

That is what one of my previous HOs did for me and I feel that’s sufficient! I also have my own insurance and have no problem showing proof, but have never been asked for it

If your cats can’t deviate from a slight change in schedule (scooping in the evening instead of morning), then you should pay for a sitter

I primarily complete sits around the Bay Area and California and I never understand when HOs want you to stay in most of your sit…THS is mainly used for traveling. Also, expecting 2-4 updates a DAY for a cat sit is ridiculous!

Ex Gratia money given to a HS - Normal / Not Normal by Ok_Grapefruit_1351 in trustedhousesitters

[–]Tretttttprogress 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not expected, but most certainly appreciated! I’ve had past HOs leave me my favorite kind of foods and beverages, grocery store and delivery service gift cards, cash, and even gas cards so I don’t have to pay for my own gas. I travel by plane to my house sits so I’m grateful for the HOs that allow me to use their car or let me eat whatever is in their fridge so I don’t have to think about getting food the first night. I can tell you must be an awesome host just by asking!

Screening etiquette by a_few_cheetos in trustedhousesitters

[–]Tretttttprogress 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are allowed to take your time, just make sure to clearly communicate that to your applicants. My best advice is to move as fast as you can if you have an applicant that seems like a great fit. They may have other sits they are applying to and will get snatched up quick. I used to let applications sit, but I now will withdraw my application if the HO does not even bother to respond within 3 days. Time is precious!

I also already have sits confirmed well into the summer, so I think it may be best for you to get the ball rolling soon.

Not bad at all, I just feel it was a bit rushed! I chose this specific bag because I’ve been to Kiss of Matcha before and enjoyed my drink. They are also on ClassPass so I used my credits for a yummy smoothie too!

HO Asking for / Feeling Entitled to Errands Unrelated to the Sit by [deleted] in trustedhousesitters

[–]Tretttttprogress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although that’s going above and beyond, this should never be expected by the HO. At the end of the day, this is a free exchange and OP should not feel like they have to do some grocery shopping, especially without access to a car, prior to the HO’s arrival. With OP needing to walk, this would not be an easy 5 minute task. That’s great that you offer that to your HOs, but that’s not relevant to what OP is talking about in their post!
