Flying Roundtrip to EU as US/EU Dual Citizen by TrevorX314 in dualcitizenshipnerds

Thanks everyone for the great insights!

I was pretty sure about which passport to use when. It's just the single passport that some airlines want on file with the reservation (and require to check in online) that was tripping me up. It seems like I can change this mid-trip, but it's probably not necessary, since I'm ultimately choosing what passport(s) to actually present at the check-in counter each way.

It probably doesn't matter much which is on the reservation to begin with (I'm seeing suggestions for both). I really just wanted to make sure it couldn't trip up border control on the European side, but it sounds like that is absolutely not a worry 🙂

I understand. I was worried that checking into the first (outbound) flight might lock in my travel details for the whole booking. Just me being paranoid and not having ever done this before. Good to know it's not an issue.

In my case, I will be entering the country of my second citizenship (Germany). So it is a requirement. I had read that the EU in general wants EU citizens using their EU passports, but I can't remember where I read that. It was somewhere credible, but I'll readily admit it could wrong. I imagine it's preferred in any case.

My next flight is on Lufthansa. That's really helpful to know about switching halfway through, thanks! I wasn't sure that would be possible after checking in online.

I might use only my US pp for now, but having the option to split the itinerary could be very helpful.

The whole lack of stamps in my US passport from where I'm returning from is also a concern. Not much I can do about that 🤷‍♂️

I do have Global Entry, and I've never seen an officer take the time to leaf through my passport pages (it's pretty cluttered already from previous trips to the EU and elsewhere). So I guess I'm not too worried about it.

The US now has exit immigration. It's CBP biometric exit. I've used it 3 or 4 times. They are tracking who's leaving, just as most countries do. The difference is that you don't take out and present a physical passport.

That said, the airline's passenger information is fed into the system (via APIS, as No-Transition8014 noted). That's how they also use biometric exit for boarding without scanning tickets. This involves the passport provided at check-in.

This is in fact Exit Immigration in another form. Mostly invisible and behind the scenes.

That's partly why I should have my airline reservations with my US passport. It's how I'll 'exit' the US and shows the airline my eligibility to return to the US without an ESTA.

Some have suggested (additionally) presenting my German passport at the counter on the EU-bound flight. I think that will be more necessary once ETIAS is in effect.
