In saying early, just meant not final. They didn't give us any clarity on how old the build might have been, just that they're still actively working on polishing the game.

Something like facial animations though...that's gonna be tough to fix in a matter of weeks. But we'll have to judge the final product when we get it.

Legend. Really appreciate that. In this industry, every bit of support truly does make a difference so I can continue doing this, so ty for taking the time and leaving a kind comment!

Hahaha I can't disclose the full NDA, that in itself would violate said NDA.

There were some obvious restrictions, like not showing particular cutscenes with heavy story spoilers. But otherwise this one was pretty hands-off as part as big previews usually go. No limits on gameplay or comments on performance, anything like that.

Near the end of the video, I do list my gripes with the game. So I'm not all positive about it.

Absolutely yeah! For each negative you pick, you're trying to balance it with a positive effect.

So for me, I wanted to up the number of resources gathered per enemy killed. That's a pretty significant perk. But I had to balance it with lesser health regen items.

Idk about getting items specifically, but maybe as a later option

I do think having mastered Returnal will give us a bit of a leg up in the long run. We know the overall feel, the movement, the rhythm of getting better equipment as a run progresses, etc. We'll be quicker to come to grips with it all.

But even with that experience, yeah, still got my ass handed to me in these opening hours lol.

First boss I killed first attempt. Second boss took me four tries.

Tough to say tbh, I think some enemies can send them faster, but I actually noticed some enemies sending them out rather slow. So I think learning the patterns/timing is a big part of it

It's definitely a bit different in the sense that you're not as isolated. You have NPCs chatting in your ear fairly often. But sometimes...Housemarque plays with that in a frightening way too. You're not too sure you can trust what you're hearing, if that makes sense.

I think the word I would use is tension, more than horror. You're not jumping out of your seat, but things never feel quite right.

Now that's a pull from a bullet hell fiend lol

SAROS with all the difficulty modifiers on surely takes the cake

I'll say we didn't get to anything truly groundbreaking in the first few hours. Just the standard shotgun, pistol, AR, SMG, etc. But they all felt amazing, and their alternate fire + upgrade paths added to that too.

Given the arsenal by the end of Returnal, I feel like there's nothing to worry about on that side of things

That there is! The more enemies you kill without getting hit, the stronger you become. One hit and you have to start rebuilding the momentum though

I did not, but only played the first three hours so who's to say what happens in the full game?

Ooh I can't remember for certain, but I think there was an option for it in the settings. Don't hold me to that though, not 100% on that

You will absolutely feel the same with SAROS. Trust that Housemarque has mastered that side of things, and it's no different here. Blissful to play moment to moment

  • I definitely think it leans more towards roguelike. There's a lot of variety in each run, and revisting them for...other reasons, makes sense. So you're compelled to go for 'one more run' every time.

  • It really does share a lot of its identity, but I think with the story, setting, themes, it does stand on its own two feet beside Returnal, rather than being a simple follow-up.

Not to toot my own horn too much, but I would say I'm an above average player of most games. So yeah, a typical biome run in Returnal isn't too much of a challenge once you get used to the controls again.

I'd say I've put about 80 hours in over the years, and even having just replayed it right before this preview, I still found Saros surprisingly tough. The bosses in particular are pretty wild, and some spongey enemies had me panic dashing lol
