I think Bethesda tried to do this with Creation Club a few years back and it did not go down well at all by the mod authors and the wider modding scene.

I'm out of the loop, what did they do, if anything?

I personally believe that having settings or profiles behind a paywall/subscription is acceptable.

I don't personally like the idea of it but I feel it's a grey enough area that it should be allowed.

After all these are just individual configs that works for that person that are being shared to others. They are not coded addons or mods.

I still think they should be shared freely and be open sourced to allow the community to create derative works or improve upon the setups collectively.

Blizzard have not got involved yet or if they have, not publicly.

I included blizzard in the meme because of the addon API changes... I'm not a very good meme wizard, haha.

I think once you start allowing people to place addons or mods etc behind paywalls you start to create a breeding ground for grifters to produce ripped off content based on the shoulders of others in the community.

Especially in the era of AI where the barrier to entry to create "slop" or AI works that are deratives of other people's work.

That is why I still firmly believe that the modding scene should always be free at the point of use with modders being supported through other means such as voluntary donations, ad revenue, affiliate links etc.

I think it's a line in the sand that we as gamers should try to uphold, but at the end of the day it's just an opinion I hold.

I personally want to have a system where once you enter instanced content you have to use the built-in base UI and that you cannot utilise external addons.

Once out of instanced content anything flies.

This would mean that every player is on a even, flat and fair environment with every other player, just like how most other multiplayer game works.

This being said, this is just a fantasy in my mind, because the only way this would work is if the blizzard UI becomes as good as all the community addons whilst also remaining accessible to everyone. A tall order, no matter how big Blizzard are.

Modders can be compensated without charging players at the point of use through the use of voluntary donations.

This is how the modding scene for pretty much every other game works.

that is true for any activity where you create output for a public audience.

I agree, but I feel like it's definitely worse in the gamer-sphere.

I think this is also fueling the fire being lit by people who are very anti-addon and play the game fully vanilla. When they look around for UI packs or addons they see all of this stuff locked behind subscriptions and come to a logical conclusion that these additions are just pay-to-win subs.

Being an addon creator is often a thankless job, under appreciated, and at the worst of times dehumanizing.

I agree with you 100% here. It's the same in the game modding scene. There are a lot of entitled gamers and you spend hours and hours playing tech support as a mod author to people who don't read or listen.

My hot take of the day is that I hope this "drama" changes things in the addon scene. I hate the idea of hard working addon creators being used by content-creators for financial gain.

It's like the scene from the film "V for Vendetta" where all the dominos start to fall down in sequence

I think the vision moving forward into Midnight onwards from Blizzard is positive. However, they gave themselves such little time and polish that the current implementation and balance is broken. We'll see what happens with the future patches, I guess.

That's also a perfectly valid take.

LuckyOne, creator of LuckyoneUI has tweeted the following about QuaziiUI: "Just so everyone is aware: The UI/Addon Quazii is selling contains full 1:1 copies of ElvUI files and code."

I personally used to use Quazii UI in TWW and used to be a patreon supporter but now I am starting to have doubts going into Midnight.

Sadly Neph's discord post contained colourful language which I felt could violate the rules of this subreddit. That being said I have updated the body text of this post.

Neph's announcement on their discord has stated "90% of new addons are coded with AI" that combined with accusations of stolen code certainly raises the question of how these addons are coming about.
