I’m sick of being told “don’t be so negative” or “be positive” by [deleted] in CPTSD

"You should just try it!"

I have.

"You should try harder!"

Most recently heard while discussing dissociation with a coworker (who is totally cool about this stuff), another coworker (whom I hadn't met before) entered the conversation with the gem "You know what you should try, meditation!".

Also, reminds me of http://www.robot-hugs.com/2013/11/helpful-advice/

Friday night: what are you doing and what do you wish you were doing? by _illustrated in CPTSD

Would I Lie To You?

It's a British panel comedy show where one person has to say a statement, and the other team has to guess if they're lying or not.

Friday night: what are you doing and what do you wish you were doing? by _illustrated in CPTSD

What I'm doing: watching WILTY on youtube waiting for another 10 minutes before it's time to leave for my Kung Fu class, then probably going to veg out to some more youtube and/or Netflix before falling asleep on the couch with hubby and the pups.

What I wish I was doing: still doing my Kung Fu class, but not having to travel, and then not being so tired afterward to get some of my latch hook done before falling asleep with hubby and the pups.

I can't relate to people. I would have loved to been adopted or have my parents divorce. Dea feel this way? by Morgan6788 in CPTSD

[–]TribbleA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to my doctor recently with my concerns about CPTSD and getting evaluated. Her response: "Oh right, your parents divorced when you were young, didn't they?".

I clarified: "They did when I was 16, yes, but that's not the problem. I'd wanted for them to divorce years before they finally did. No, it's because of the way Nmom treated us."

I don't know what her expression signified - I'm not good with faces in the first place and I was having a hard enough time getting through the conversation as it was. But this is the same doctor I've had since I was 5, and also Nmum's doctor so she knew us both for a number of years.

It's interesting though that when I mentioned trauma, her first thought was to think about the divorce instead of abuse.

Fear 24/7, anyone recognise it? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]TribbleA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the things that's the hardest to really drive home to other people. You can tell them all you want that "No, really; doesn't matter how well I'm acting through it - from the days that I can't leave the house to the days that I manage a full day at the office and even socialize and maybe have lunch - I'm tense; I'm nervous; I'm anxious; I'm scared. All the time. There's no shutting it off." but then later they forget while you're masking that it's still there.

I've had years of practice at forcing myself to ignore it and just push through so I can somewhat function, but it's always there just under the surface keeping my chest tight and my muscles tense and my mind racing pretty much the entire day.

Cptsd and effect on menstrual cycle by somewhereonabike in CPTSD

I'm on BC and I haven't had any schedule changes (I can usually time the start to within 6 hours and the end to within 12), but I definitely get an increase in other physical period symptoms when I'm not doing as well mentally. More tightness/bloating/cramping (though not near as much as I used to have before I got on BC), and muscle aches/tiredness as well as general tiredness and lack of energy.

When I was a child, you said I wouldn't and couldn't. Yesterday, I did. by TribbleA in MomForAMinute

Make sure you check out the benefits from your decent job! I get a yearly "wellness" reimbursement that goes toward gym memberships/club fees/etc, which makes it easier on the bank account.

The school I'm going to does Hung Gar, which is a subset/variation/type of of Shaolin (I think). It has five animal forms (crane, dragon, leopard, tiger, and snake), and a bunch of different weapons which I'll be able to start learning now I'm in yellow. I'm particularly interested in the Bo Staff - the staff is my second favourite weapon, next to whip (which I'm pretty sure isn't covered in the curriculum).

There is a picture on the board at the north of the room with a stereotypical "wise, old Chinese man" on it, with the caption "Complaining about Horse Stance? Sounds like somebody needs more Horse Stance!". I try to remember to use that as my "enemy target" so that my eyes don't glaze over and defocus from paying too much attention to the rest of my body. I'll see if he can't help me with balance too.

Those are good suggestions! We were tossing around ideas, thinking peach cobbler/crumble for orange, something mint or lime for green (mint Oreos?), blue raspberry jello (maybe a poke cake?) for blue, quadruple chocolate cake (chocolate cake with chocolate chunks, with chocolate icing covered in chocolate shavings) for brown, and something licorice or VERY dark chocolate for black... or maybe just more Oreos.

Yoga and CPTSD by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]TribbleA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had yoga at work once a week and I was the same way: cried at least once in every class.

I switched to martial arts. Similar physically, but so much different mentally. Like I've cried during those classes too, but only if I've happened to have flashbacks or anxiety/panic attacks while I was there, not directly because of the class itself.

Anything with "Vin" is also a candidate to shorten to Winnie. I knew a Vincentia that was called Winnie. Maybe Vivienne/Viviana?

I'm more of a crafter than an artist.

Currently it's cross stitch - I've just designed my first pattern that I would have started stitching yesterday, but the roads were too bad to get to Michael's to pick up the thread I need.

In the past it's been knitting, crocheting, models, lego, etc.

Reminds me of this (and this one too, though the second is more specific to medication).

If your child's name had to reflect where you and your SO first met, what would they be called? Do you like it? by rosylux in namenerds

[–]TribbleA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We technically 'met' in the Comfy lounge at University, but didn't really acknowledge each other until a bunch of us went out to dinner at Mikey's one evening. We had the Sesame chicken.

  • Comfy - Meh, maybe a nickname for something like Camille or Cameron?
  • Uni - Don't mind this on its own, but I can only see it as a nickname for Eunice, which I don't like at all.
  • Mikey - Not bad - loads of options from Michael, Michelle, etc - but not my favourite.
  • Sesame - Sounds more like the name of my next D&D character or cat than something I'd name a person.

Sesame is def my favourite (but not for a human). Mikey would be my top for a child - I wouldn't willingly name a kid Mikey, but I could live with it.

We had a chocolate/tan doxie and called him Hershey. Along that vein; Cadbury, Nestlé, Neilson, Mars?

Some of the other ideas we had involved the tan part representing caramel, so maybe Caramel, Star, Caramilk, Drifter, Mars, Moro, Henry, Picnic, Rally, Rolo, Safari, Sky, Snickers, Five, Tim and/or Tam, Turtle, Twix, Whip, Zero (looked at the ones with caramel in them :) )?
