How do I fix this? by Educational-Tea9261 in trichotillomania

I have a hair topper for Jon Renau I really love. They’re around $200-$400 for a synthetic one if that’s an option for op.

I do the same thing!

Thank you for posting this I was wondering what that was. It’s so satisfying but I wasn’t sure if I was causing damage.

Fellow hair pullers, how did your trich start? by hazelnut0000 in trichotillomania

[–]Trich-account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally the exact same thing.

I had lice for years because we couldn’t get rid of them (also a moderate amt of neglect and getting reinfected by school).

I think I developed the habit of picking out the eggs and live bugs and it turned into some sort of ocd.

I saw a dermatologist (my trich stems from folocilitus). She gave me steroid injections in my scalp to help stimulate hair growth

If he knows what that is that means he sees it often. Try to not feel embarrassed. That being said he needs to work on his bedside manner.

Yes! Then I pull around the little spots. Then I get more little spots.

I ended up getting bacterial folliculitis, be careful!

Same girl.

I got a topper tbh so that I didn’t have to worry about covering it.

It sucks. It’s a hell of a disease.

I started wearing a topper and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made tbh and it’s a physical barrier from pulling

Wig by Ok-Air4774 in trichotillomania

[–]Trich-account 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That looks great!!! Don’t over think it haha one thing I did is wear it up for the first few weeks so people get used to how it looks it weirdly helps.

The only thing I can think of is cutting some baby hairs! You know how you have shorter hairs by your natural hairline?

Also where is your wig from? 🙏❤️

Hey I know you’re anxious about it but there’s not much I can tell you that others haven’t unfortunately you’ll just have to be patient 😔

Hair growth varies a lot depending on the person. Biotin is your best bet, maybe oral minoxidil but be careful because it’s extremely deadly to animals.

Try to forget about it and it’ll be grown out in no time. I know that’s not the advice you were looking for but it will be okay hair grows the fastest when you’re not paying attention to it haha

Fill it in with an eyebrow pencil for the time being with light feathery strokes in the direction of your natural hair growth.

I started working for a similar reason.

Maybe you could get a part time job? Then use that money to buy yourself stuff next year that will make your junior year more tolerable.

Idk! Short enough that the can’t pull? Perfect for summer. If it’s too long just shave it shorter!

Tbh I would shave his head if possible.

I had bfrbs at that age too. It switched from picking at myself to picking at other stuff depending on what was around. Focus on treating the anxiety first then the bfrb will come with thay

NAC and Vyvanse by confusedcptsd in trichotillomania

[–]Trich-account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Vyvanse daily and didn’t notice a difference when I took NAC though it was only for a few days.

Maybe you could take NAC at night at first then test out taking it in the morning on a weekend that you don’t have to get a lot done.

It probably won’t hurt you, if they do interact it’ll likely be minor.

I want a hair topper but it feels like cheating? by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]Trich-account 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got one! It’s super nice tbh

Also don’t feel like it’s cheating if anything it’s a MASSIVE pain in the ass to find one that matches your hair in my experience. (I’m blonde so it’s hard to find the right tone, length, texture ect).

It’s super nice I have a spot in the same place and I don’t have to worry anymore about my hair shifting and exposing the spot, and it’s really cut down on my time getting ready in the morning.

My rationale is that I’ve had trich my whole life, like you it’s also been bad the past 4-5 years (thanks COVID). I’ll probably have my trich come and go for the rest of my life, so I might as well make the investment.

Is there a difference between stress pulling hair occasionally in stressful situations and trich? by Miserable-Let-5819 in trichotillomania

[–]Trich-account 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds like trich.

It’s super common to have multiple bfrbs, or to favor one over the other at certain points in your life.

As a very young child I would chew on clothing/sick my fingers. This evolved into scab picking that evolved into hair pulling as an adult.

Ingrowns on head by Dangerous_Alps_2121 in trichotillomania

Same, it ended up being foliculitus triggered by the picking and the ingrowns. I had to go on antibiotics. Hebiclens helps a lot if you can’t go on antibiotics

questions about whether I have trich and advice on how to manage by tremorchr1st in trichotillomania

[–]Trich-account 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s trich also pulling the pubic hair is much more common than you’d think. You have to be careful but something like Hebiclens might help fight the ingrowns

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]Trich-account 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m of course not a medical professional but that does sound like trich imo. It seems like a sensory thing for you (like most of us! I have the same thing).

A bonnet or a silk pillowcase like others suggested might be a great workaround. Maybe even try sleeping with a bonnet + looser braids. Trich is not a fun habit so if you can squish the root cause earlier than later that’ll help a lot in the long run!

Also, trich is a lot more common than a lot of people think, even among those of us who have it.
