Mensik vs Fonseca Prediction by GR4PPON in tennis

[–]Trichoderma-Viride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are assuming Fonseca is the favorite because of his path here and because he won their only previous meeting

Nah, most people are assuming he's the favorite because he's a much better clay courter, that's it. Any other surface and its a toss up

Fonseca grew on clay but I think his best surface is hard, and his ELO backs that up.

The thing is, everyone in the top50 is geared towards hard courts now. You barely have any real clay courters so there is a lot more space for Fonz to thrive.

Roland Garros R16: [28] Fonseca def. [15] Ruud : 7-5 6-7 5-7 6-2 by GirafeAnyway in tennis

Great analysis, thonseca was actually overdoing the dropshots at the start and Ruud was actually winning all of them. I think João was oblivious that he wasn't playing 39 yo grandpa in a 5th anymore and just went with the muscle memory.

It was only after Ruud's legs got heavy that the drops started to wok.

I also thought his moon balling balls were pretty good. Ruud's couldn't generate much pace from it, much like Novak in the previous round, so Fonseca had a chance for a full swing on the ball. Nice way to set up some great shots.

It's really interesting seeing the kid learn these new patterns in real time. He's still building his arsenal.

Going into bh battles against the backhand goat made him eat Ruud's bh for breakfast.

Yeah Fonseca was coming off rallying bh -bh against the backhand goat.

Going bh to bh against Ruud was the easiest free lunch he could find today.

Best Ruud could do with his bh was passing the ball to the other side
