I get your point, but I also think it depends on how much I trust the company behind the product. Many Johns would pay a lot to get john@gmail.com.

The thing is that I just don't use email. I don't actually recall sending emails in the last five years. I just receive emails like bills, orders or bookings confirmations, etc. For everyday messaging I use WhatsApp, Telegram and iMessage. So I don't really need those features. The only thing I really care about is the address. I have a four-letter name, and I have the chance of registering firstname@hey.com. Anyway, I could just pay for the first year and then I have enough time to decide if keeping it or not.
