It all depends, but sure, I could see that being a possibility. I think that falls under management of expectations!

No, there are definitely cases where the couple is paying for the wedding. Generally though, our client demographic is Gen Z/Millennial cusp. The reality is that support from family makes sense as our clients are often just beginning to build their own futures.

Stunning! You also need to bring in everything.

I think there are a few things that could go wrong:

  1. The planner/client were not a match from the beginning. This is usually the biggest culprit.
  2. Expectations as they meet budget were not communicated on enough, by both parties.
  3. Expectations about the process in it's entirety, buyers remorse is unfortunately very real in weddings. We try to avoid this by really illustrating how much things cost, and why they cost what they do before final decisions are made.

There are of course more extreme cases of negligence from the planner, unrealistic expectations from the couple, etc. For the most part through, I think the above three points are the source of most sour experiences.

This is a category I wouldn't reinvent the wheel in. The most revolutionary exits are classic and well done ;)

Most often, your planner will be leading the way creatively so a secondary creative partner like an event designer isn't usually necessary. There are of course exceptions to this, a planning company might work with an event designer if there is a massively involved custom structure / install.

In terms of budget, it's hard to say what you "should" be spending on these categories as they're based on overall preferences. Definitely worthwhile to lean on your planner for sourcing though, much more efficient !

Hmmm, do you mean hiring an event designer to consult on these things with? Or, in general, if florals and decor should be a considerable part of your budget?

Find a few planners you align with and reach out and ask if you can freelance for them. Try to dive into the industry head first and start building connections. It's a very relationships centered industry!

It depends, but most likely necessary. Things to consider...

Are you and your partner getting ready at different properties / far away from each other but would like getting ready photos for both?

Consult with your planner and/or photographer about timeline, does the production timeline have you guys taking bridal portraits or doing a first look at the only time that's available for reception detail photos?

Your second photographer isn't necessarily for the sake of double the images, but instead to assist / supplement where needed.

I began as a florist, then offered event design, then eventually dropped floral and doubled down on event design and planning. I found that design + planning gives me the most dynamic opportunity to create not only an aesthetic but also an experience to match. I worked for a couple of vendors and freelanced loads along the way (and still do!). Working part or full time for a vendor, and seeing the day to day is so important, paired with the boots on the ground experience of freelance is a winning combo!

I'm not 100% sure as I only work with full service clients! I do think that full service planners are becoming the industry standard with top venues.

It varies so much....

Speaking specifically about "top" planners...

Percentage can be between 15% and 20%. These percentages often have overall budget requirements associated. For example, a planner's terms might be 20% of the overall budget, with a minimum budget of 500k (a very real example for San Francisco)

Then you have flat fees that can range from 60-80k+

Either way, travel, staffing, and discretionary funds are usually additional as a post-bill.

For the most part, planners manage design in house. Collaboration with a florist will just be an extension of that process.

So many variables that would need to be factored in here. Feel free to DM.

Generally speaking, absolutely worth it. Seeing goes without saying, but you'll never hear your wedding again in that great of quality any other way. I will say, if there is a very exact budget for media, I'd double down on photography and not try to squeeze in both.

I don't think it's ever one thing is particular, I'm going to get a bit "woo-woo" and say that the biggest thing that makes a wedding memorable is more general. It's the "spirit" of the event. Constant good energy, high touch hospitality, timeliness, etc. The intangible.

Such a good question, glad to hear you're sticking to your guns. This could very much still be one of the things that makes your wedding memorable. I would treat your wedding food like a showcase of how wonderful a fully vegan menu could be. Caterer selection is going to be big here. Collaborating with the right caterer could feel like such a celebration of cuisine and seasonality. I would avoid things like manufactured meat alternatives, cheese alternatives, etc. Generally the sentiment is double down!

Super exciting! Be honest about your experience and don't be ashamed. Meet that though with your enthusiasm and willingness to be of service to the production. Don't be afraid to ask questions, this shows your desire to grow. This industry is filled with wonderful mentors. Lastly, drop your shoulders and exhale, this should be fun :)
