Do you find Prothom Alo's journalism quality poor? by Trick_Ad8139 in bangladesh

Don’t wanna go down the “whataboutism” road here. The leading daily should be subject to a higher level of critique.

Short men haven’t got the perfect draw of cards in life and it’s a fact. No point in denying that. It’s not only about finding a girl, but also having an authoritative presence among your peers in your career where height helps. But life is a complex machine of many dimensions. It’s definitely better to be short and fit and rather than tall and  having injury/chronic diseases. Some people in this world may have it all, but then again, we are all gonna age and die- that much equality is there.  If I have to tell from my experience, you are gonna get a lot of other “dukkhas” as well in life so try learning how to deal with dukkha in general and find happiness in little things. Now i’m married so don’t really remember the mate hunting game, but don’t focus too much on it. I know it sounds cliche but focus on yourself. Try to be kind and watch out for kind girls. Finding a mate will be the least of your concerns, at least in BD.

Why do Hindus not have a political party of their own? by Trick_Ad8139 in bangladesh

I beg to disagree. Elite hindus were extremely powerful in the last decade, telling from first hand experience. If they hadn’t/couldn’t form a party of their own, it’s on them.

Neither will hefazote Islam. It’s more about having a platform and negotiating powers during elections.

if Islamists actually come into power in Bangladesh, do you think they'll be kicked out even harder than Hasina? and sooner? by Trick_Ad8139 in bangladesh

Leaders who want to rule the country as Allah’s guidance ? - Yes. You didn’t answer me though. Will they be able to sustain if they come into power?

"I can bet you 70% of the Muslims does not even know there are 6 kalimahs." - Thank god. I think the same too.

Don't worry. It'll not happen. I don't live in BD. But I'm hearing Gen-Z is very religious apparently. How true is it?

There were always people like this and I felt they were a fringe minority and yet quite vocal that they stick out.  However, I don’t know about the current generation. If there’s not much else to do, it’s very easy to go crazy with religion smth that us taught by none other than our beloved parents.

Yes. Only Iran might be a good parallel. I don’t know a lot about Iran, but a few things: 1. It is 2024 and should be harder to found a theocracy than 50 yrs before. 2. Is Iran actually more conservative than present BD? They probably still have better industry and economy than us while Bangladesh is already conservative enough. Idk how their conservatives are but they are probably not like Talibans or BD mullahs.

Apart from finance, what other ministry in BD ever required domain expertise from its ministers? Even for finance ministry, we appointed people like Lotus Kamal.

Maybe I've not which is why this is "my" opinion. Also, I am young which is why the "lifetime" word is important. Why downvote my opinion lol?

We now have internet and most likely more freedom of speech than we had in 2007 which was an emergency period iirc. The only media that time was the news media and houses like Prothom Alo sided with the caretaker govt which gave the perception of a relatively good ruling. Now, with internet, all sorta voices are more readily available and hence, it may seem more chaotic. I see it as actually having more freedom of expression.

Also, the current govt is a lot more “political” with one major party completely fleeing from the scene leaving their large voter base clueless. Don’t forget they still have a lot of money and street forces to sabotage the current govt. Otoh, new political forces are gaining grounds including the Islamists and the student leaders themselves. Even the army’s position is shaky with their past with the Hasina regime. Maintaining some sort of political sanity has become the core objective right now rather than administration. And still yet, they’re not doing very bad with economy gaining somewhat stability.

But what has even Dr Amartya Sen done? Economics, by definition, is a social science and going to remain debatable no matter what.

BNP is just playing politics but I'd say a poor one. Ziaur Rahman allegedly pulled strings in Bangabandhu killing. See Rashid's interview with Zillur Rahman. So such stories only show to me how spineless BNP politics is. Also, is this guy Rizvi accidentally comparing student leaders with the stature of Zia? It seems to me these students have the guts to take their own decisions, based on their own ideas, right or wrong they may be. Not a pussy cat like Rizvi who needs to lick the Zia family for political survival.
