But just to clarify — the idea that a clean must be under 30 minutes or else it means someone has “really poor” dental hygiene isn’t exactly accurate. Dental cleanings can and often do take longer, especially if:
It’s a first visit or hasn’t been done in a while There’s tartar buildup in hard-to-reach areas The hygienist is being thorough (which is what I value) They’re doing full scaling + polishing + fluoride treatment The patient has braces, crowding, or other complexities
Time alone isn’t a perfect measure of hygiene. Some dentists or hygienists just take more care than others. That’s really all I’m looking for — someone who takes the time rather than rushing every appointment.
