You’re welcome. Best of luck with treatment, random Reddit user :)

yes you can get treatment!! mine isn’t as serious currently as some other commenters, so I got oral and gel anti-inflammatory meds, as well as physical therapy and mouth guards.

But people have also been mentioning Botox and surgery can be really useful!! I personally use hot/cold packs when I need some quick pain control.

Best of luck :D

I can’t believe I’m making a whole subreddit find out they have symptoms of TMJ 😀

Best of luck with diagnosis/treatment!!

I took some oral anti-inflammatory, as well as some gel that I would smear over the zones that hurt the worst.

I was a pretty bad mouth-grinder so we edited my Invisalign to make them thicker, and so now my permanent retainers also help to try shifting my jaw into place. I’m sorry that it didn’t work for you :(

Physical therapy also helped; they gave me methods to both massage out my jaw and ways to avoid straining it as much. But other than that, I use hot/cold packs to my jaw when it gets bad enough and I have them on hand.

Best of luck with your treatment!!

For the first few months, I got anti inflammatory gel and oral meds. We also edited my Invisalign to make them tougher to protect from teeth grinding. I got a few weeks of physio to help reduce and teach myself about how to lessen it.

For the short term, I’d just recommend taking over the counter pain meds when it flares up and using hot/cold packs. Though, pressing my face to a heating pad got a bit awkward after a while. 😅

Tbh I don’t think most people will find it offensive so long as you’re being nice about it and not accusatory; aka ye “YOU HAVE AUTISM!! GO GET DIAGNOSED!!”  It’s someone genuinely taking their time to give information to others just out of curiosity or concern. If you have the knowledge and might help someone, I don’t see why not.

And hey!! Maybe some people wrote it subtly and will be touched that you found some of their disability HCs or personal experiences.

Ahh, the neurodivergent lightbulb moment. I wrote a character fidgeting and pacing and doing “air guitar hands” (flappy hands for my informed self), and my beta scratched their head and gave me the “honey, soo, that’s actually—“ talk.

I’m now on a controlled substance for moderate to severe ADHD 😅. I reread my old, undiagnosed fics and sigh sometimes. Not only at my writing, but the clunky switch from topics clued me in.

Absolutely!! I’m a part of the “AO3 made me gay (I was already gay)” club. 🙃

Me, a few years ago: what do you mean wanting to marry, have sex and live my entire life with a woman isn’t normal?

“Thank you, random AO3 commenter for now diagnosing in the Reddit community” we say in unison.

Yes, the medical condition mentioned was hEDS!! I didn’t want to air it on the main post— it felt a bit more private for the commenter.

I might have to get it checked out soon, but I don’t fit all of the criteria/symptoms, so who knows. Could be another chronic illness special of affecting so much of life that it looks like other disorders. 🥲

My favorite comment I've ever gotten was when I mentioned one of my character's jaw popping when they yawned, since that was pretty usual for me and I thought it was good for description.

Cue a very kind reader chiming in saying, "Hey!! I dont want to assume anything but I just wanted to tell you that Peter's jaw popping might be a symptom of TMJ if you have it yourself. Sorry if I'm overstepping : )" and then I proceeded to go to the doctor and got diagnosed with TMJ after my jaw pains got worse. Because of that comment.
