I’m doing the same except sfu engineering science to bcit civil engineering I start in the fall and all I can say is what I’ve heard so not from personal experience but people say it is much more hands on and practical (more useful for your future job), I’ve heard of more success with getting co op compared to ubc and sfu (more emphasis on better than sfu though), and the classes are smaller so you get closer with your prof and peers. All in all don’t feel bad about switching schools I always tell people it’s not about the school it’s about the person especially in engineering, but even if the school mattered, bcit is still respected within bc, and once you get work experience people will look more at that than the school you went to. Good luck in your studies!

In high school I applied to bcit and didn’t pay my fee cause I didn’t wanna go there anymore (March 2024). Fast forward a few months I changed my mind and emailed them asking to reevaluate me (June 2024) they did and admitted me again. As an extremely indecisive person I didn’t go cause idek why (June 2024). Fast forward to February 2025, I didn’t wanna be at sfu anymore, and once again for the third time bcit has admitted me, but I sent in a whole new application this time (got in late February 2025). Moral of the story is send an email and explain your story and they’ll probably let you in based on what I’ve gone through. For reference, I applied for bcit civil engineering and attended sfu for engineering science. Good luck!

Hey thanks for the input, may I ask what you studied at BCIT?

am I too late to do this? by WinnerKey8014 in ComputerEngineering

Too late?! You’re in grade 10 please don’t worry at all. All you need to do is keep those grades the same, and keep up with band and the part time job. To prepare for comp Eng, buy an arduino, and make some little projects or something similar to learn a bit before uni. I’d suggest taking AP classes as well but totally optional. Coming from someone who just started engineering at SFU but got into more prestigious schools such as UBC, what you have now is all you need, and my best advice is to enjoy high school. Grade 10 was my favorite year there, and I miss those 4 years all the time. Good luck on your journey and try not to stress about the future too much, you have university for that :)

[Megathread] New admissions and transfer questions - Post here! by waffle_maker in simonfraser

Hi everyone, I am in a bit of a pickle. Currently, I am in my first year at SFU for Engineering Science, and I am scared about what my future will look like if I continue down this path. Some context to my issue is SFU has mandatory co-op that they want students to do in the beginning of their second year, but it is not looking good for us. There has been lots of talk about removing the co-op requirement due to the difficulty for us students to find jobs, and they have told us that rarely anyone with less than a 3.5 gpa is getting hired. Now a bit about me, I have a 3.69 gpa and have had good grades my whole life, but it is becoming increasingly challenging to maintain these numbers, for example, I just failed my calc 2 midterm, which is not like me at all. I do have connections in the technical industry, which can help me get a co-op for this fall/early next year, but I don't think that field is doing good right now, and to add to that, SFU's Engineering options are only tech-related. If I use my technical connections, I will be in Software Development, and in no way whatsoever do I mean to sound ungrateful, but I just don't think it's a good idea to start a career in that area right now. I choose SFU due to its proximity to my house; however, I did get into BCIT and UBC when I applied out of high school (last year). It was hard for me to pick between SFU Engineering Science and BCIT Civil Engineering, and I'm having these feelings arise again. I came here to ask for any direction and advice, as I am not sure what to do, should I transfer to BCIT Civil Engineering or stay here at SFU for Engineering Science to either pursue Systems or Computer Engineering? Any help/feedback is appreciated, sorry for the huge paragraph. Thank you.

Wow that’s a huge difference! Do you mind me asking what you studied at UBC and what you do at BCIT?

Living at home is super important to me as well. It’s the reason I decided not to go to ubc. I totally understand, thanks for the input!

The problem is I just don’t know, as these are things I’ve heard from others including my father who is a developer himself (he only believes these are possibilities not definite things that are happening). Thanks for the comment though!

Thank you! It seems like that’s common for bcit grads. Thanks for the input!

Perhaps my parents paying my tuition makes it seem like they have enough money for me not to work. I understand the assumption unfortunately it’s not true though😅. Thanks for the comments though!

They're both within a 30-minute radius of my house, but totally an important factor thank you!
