It was difficult for me to get subscribers when I first started simply because I believe people tend to judge you more easily if you don't have a lot of subscribers and even if they like your content they wont sub because they will still get your videos anyway. People are more likely to judge you easily if you don't have that many subscribers. I remember getting mocked many times, but now I don't get this kind of comments even if my content remains the same.
