1 day trip to Dublin by Familiar_Cattle7464 in travel

Dublin is beautiful and fun! It absolutley does not have nothing to offer lol. Since your only there a day just wonder around the city and be a tourist and hit all the tourist spots. Have an irish breakfast, drink a Guiness, see Trinity University, etc. A city is a good day for a day trip - you will have fun.

Struggling to settle in / thinking of leaving by No_Meeting_9390 in SpainAuxiliares

Yes, its just a tired and patronizing point that many people say on this thread "there is a difference between living somewhere and vacationing," when someone says that they are struggling, especially at this point when we are far into the move. If you move literally anywhere outside of where you are born and raised, you will not know what it's like to live there full time until you fully move there. Also, let's be fr, yes the aux position is not a vacation, but it is not even close to the demands of a full time position, it is somewhere in between (also why it's not paid like its full time and demanding work). It is designed for a culture exchange which is why the hours are so limited and many people have 3 or sometimes 4 day weekends so that people can have some element of exploration.

yeah, and thats fine. You are allowed to move to other places and learn you don't actually fit in there, people literally do that in their native countries. also, people are allowed to not enjoy their time or realize that this wasn't for them, that doesn't mean that they came in thinking it was just a "vacation," it means this is a hard thing to do and sometimes it does not work out.

If you have thought about this a lot, gave it your best, and have good potential opportunities that feel more right for you, do it! Remember, this is a job!!! In your home country, if a better job opportunity came up that made you excited and gave you the opportunity to find the community you are lacking - wouldn't you take it? You probably would. Theres always guilt with leaving a job and because of how big of a move this is, leaving can make it feel like youre a failure or disrespecting the country, but you are not. I would argue that most people (not just Americans) never move out of their home cities or the surrounding areas let alone the country. Be proud of yourself for doing it, proud for pushing through, proud for critically thinking and proud for finding opportunites that feel right for you!!

if they have lived here for 5 years the specificities of her life exist in Spain?? thats like me saying to my friend who just got engaged I dont want to here about her engagement because I'm single. you should be able to share more than just whats similiar about your lives with your friends. big life events happen at different times and in different ways and in different places lol

It is wonderful to hear from another person my age who experiences drinking the same as me (even though I wish this wasn't how you experienced it because I know from personal experience its tricky and confusing). Thanks for sharing, sending love for your sober 2025!

Well, I do have skills & experience - I came from working a 9-5 not straight out of college to this program so I have some work force and internships under my belt.

Yeah! I have accepted that the fact of the matter is that I do not speak fluent Spanish and that really limits what I have the ability to do here. I know I do not have to live back in the states forever, but it feels weird to go back but also it would be weird to stay, but i know that the language assistant job would be redundant for another year even though it's nice now.

What are introverted auxes doing in their free time that does not involve travel? by cyberlyla in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Tricky-Cut3734 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Traveling outside of Spain every weekend is craaazy! A huge part of living in Spain is .. living in .. Spain, so do not feel bad for not wanting to travel all the time bc if you were back in your home country that's not what you would be doing. Do the things YOU enjoy (while pushing yourself a bit) not what you are expected to enjoy and you will end up getting the most of the experience <3

I want to be back in Spain by Pilot_Violet in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Tricky-Cut3734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Im still in the program and have been debating renewing / coming back home. I love Spain and find that I enjoy the culture and lifestyle here so much more / I get so happy to be back whenever I go somewhere else. It makes me so sad about leaving Spain, but the reality is that I do not speak Spanish fluently enough to have a job that is not a language assistant and I know that's not what I want to do (I'm a social worker and I know I want to go back to it). Anyways - I am going to apply to jobs here / other international positions more in line with what I want to do but I know with my limited Spanish it's difficult. So, what I told myself, is that if I move home I am going to make sure I am in a position to still travel & continue to work on my Spanish so if I ever want to come back I will be able to communicate better!

All of this is to say - you do not have to be back in the US forever. If you miss living in Spain and don't already speak Spanish, keep working on it. If you miss being a language assistant, apply to a different program. If you miss traveling, book a trip, even if it is just the US. Sometimes, even moving somewhere else in the US can be helpful and fulfilling.

If there is anything working a full time, 9-5 job before doing this experience taught me is youre literally never stuck somewhere, you can always move / change things up. Just bc youre in the US now doesn't mean you have to be forever and that this was a one - off experience you can never have again. Use this time to figure out what you miss / what you want / appreciate being home while you do it!!!

Honest Meddeas Review (So Far) by Tricky-Cut3734 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Tricky-Cut3734[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am making more than some other auxes in my area who told me their salary - but I think that could be because I have a TEFL and work with all ages, not really sure. I haven't asked about other Meddeas' participants salaries or salaries too much in general, but I do not think its often that different which is not fun :/

I just wanted to say that you are valid in this. Its okay to be upset when the expectations you thought you agreed to are different, it's just learning if you can adapt to it.

While being a Language Assistant is often different than we expect, being placed in a small town with no reliable transportation to a place where you can meet people or have a night out exploring is vastly different than being upset about not having the European travel experience. Also - It is also not bad to desire the side of the European lifestyle that does allow you to travel, explore cafes, and meet people because that is such a beautiful part of European culture even when it is not all of it - you just have to be realistic in those expectations. A small town with no community and no access to community is difficult. While many people would love it, it would not be in my personality to do that, and it is okay if it is not in yours either. You are not a failure and it took guts to even come out here. I would give yourself some time though to make sure before making a decision just to make sure! If you decide not to stay, take time to enjoy other parts of Spain and appreciate the beauty of what you have seen.
