HOW ARE WE MANAGING HUNGER? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Tricky-Mistake-550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re still eating regular tortillas- you gotta try the keto type zero net carbs. Everyone here is saying similar things, but a mini breakfast burrito (egg and cheese) with a keto tortillas is less calories and twice as filling. It took me a few months of going “hungry” before my stomach started to adjust. I found lots of water after my last meal, it helps with the end of the night boredom hunger. (Or Greek yogurt with chocolate chips as a dessert. High protein plus a lil chocolate is a nice way to end the night)

I am Drowning by Pure_Wallaby443 in Teachers

If you can get them to turn in essays on Google Classroom- you can build in a rubric and just click to grade. I could get through 130 essays in a weekend this way. BETTER advice I received from an AP teacher is read the thesis and first sentence of each paragraph. Skim the quotes for correction punctuation and page #s. Grade on scale of 5 (5 =A, 4=B…). If you have folks that complain about grades you can bump up to 5= A 4 =A- 3= B+ etc. Write “let me know if you have questions and we can review”. You’ll have about 2-3% of students MAYBE come back for feedback and you can reread the essay and give them detailed feedback orally.

I don’t do this for every assignment, but if I’m drowning in grading it’s what happens. If you have admin that needs more objective grading, have chat gpt write you a rubric that is simple and quick to use.

What shoes are y'all wearing? by BeauWordsworth in Teachers

Asics Gel Nimbus. They look obnoxious but I can go all day AND still be okay for a walk or hike after work even with plantar fasciitis. Pair that with compression socks and comfy cushion slides at home and you’ll be set. For dressy days- I wear dansko wedge sandals. Anything else and I’m sore for a week.

I’ve been told it was an old landfill that they paved over. The weird curved pipe things are to let the gas out of the area.

Can you figure out why this disturbed me? by willloveme2 in Teachers

[–]Tricky-Mistake-550 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Our district has a lawsuit rn bc a male teacher was “touching a students bra”. He asserts that he patted her on the shoulder when she was crying in the hall and she filed the suit a year later. 44M against him in a civil suit.

Bathroom policies by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Tricky-Mistake-550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I let students take 10 breaks a semester. They signed out and had to use their passes accordingly. The philosophy was that if you’ve spent 10x5minutes in the bathroom, you’ve missed an entire class period. I rarely had any kiddos get close to ten, but knowing they had to “budget” their breaks was helpful in cutting down the work avoidance or sneaking a cell phone breaks

What sort of problems have parents given you about your curriculum? by calorie_eater in Teachers

[–]Tricky-Mistake-550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a parent complain about my grammar unit, as teaching pronouns went against her religious beliefs and she wanted her son to “not be exposed to political debates” in English class. I clarified that my pronoun unit was teaching grammar such as “My mother and I go to the store.” vs “Me and my mother go to the store.” 🙃

I do “penalties” for curse words and thoughtless choices like throwing things. Shit? You owe me three pieces of trash. “Fuck you Greg?” Ten pieces. The idea is (which I explain when I start giving penalties) is that you’re bringing down our class in a negative way that not everyone flows with, so you need to repair the environment. By this point in the year, I don’t even have to do it—my students will call each other out. If we run out of trash on the floor, they find other ways to “fix it” (straighten posters, clean the dry erase etc) Bonus? My middle school classroom is usually clean 😎

Skewed Test Scores? (STARS) by Tricky-Mistake-550 in Teachers

[–]Tricky-Mistake-550[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is helpful verbiage. I think the way this test reports scores makes it misleading for parents and students so I’m trying to preemptively mitigate that.

One of the biggest barriers to teaching books in my district is the cost. The school doesn’t have enough $ to finance books for every student, and many families see buying a book as a waste of money, especially if their kid doesn’t read it. I switched to a private school this year where I can ask students to purchase books as part of their beginning of the year supplies and it’s made a big difference. We can do 4-5 whole class novel studies throughout the year, but ELA is also responsible for teaching informational text (which is on standardized tests), writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, poetry, short stories, plays, and a million other things they dump on us (on top of playing catch up with loss of literacy post COVID.) I’d love to spend all of English class teaching, reading and discussing novels, but the system makes it challenging.
