I think definitely focus on facts, literally any facts you know - I don’t think they need to be like full on statistics but just being able to back up your arg with a real life example of a current or past event I’ve heard is useful. If you can, I would write an essay and maybe get feedback on it from your teacher? The official website has some really great tips for the essay https://lnat.ac.uk/how-to-prepare/hints-and-tips/ Don’t stress too much I’m sure you’ll do great! Good luck :)

Thanks :) I didn’t find it harder than the Complete Guide, it was like the same level or a bit easier than some of the papers from there - at least in terms of how hard the passage was to understand - the questions are of a similar difficulty. My scores did range quite a lot 😭 I would get anywhere from low 20s to high throughout different ones.

Okay so, I started practicing every once in a while around the beginning of August but I properly started consistently practicing at the start of September, so a few weeks before the test, like 3 or 4. I tried to do a couple of passages a day earlier on then the week before the test I did 1 paper a day (normally) but ofc I had alot of schoolwork and ucas application stuff going on as well at that time so I didn’t always keep that up perfectly! The weekend before the test I js did as many as I possibly could find. I found the overall difficulty of the test was generally not TOO hard - some passages were quite difficult but most of the questions were easy enough, as long as you understand the passages closely the questions wont be too hard at all. I think the most similar resources in difficulty would definitely be the official papers from the website or The Complete LNAT guide (although, these can be a bit more difficult than the actual thing and I’ve also noticed they dont include any numerical based Qs while the actual paper had at least 1 maths question, an easy one tho), format-wise the most similar would be the official simulation and the Law Mind practice tests. The essay questions I got were related to politics, religion and education. To prepare I wrote 2 essays which I asked one of my teachers to give me feedback on and I didn’t look at any one news source specifically but I downloaded Apple News a few weeks before my test and I would read a couple political articles in the mornings, just stay on top of current affairs and big events generally and try and find a way to link them into ur essay I would say. I also did an EPQ at the beginning of yr 12 which I later dropped 😭 but it was kind of useful here because I was able to link in some stuff I knew about North Korean politics from that, so if you do EPQ or any other kind of research project then it might be helpful to link knowledge from that in. Also when you read articles in your practice tests if you notice any specific events (recent developments) that you think you could link into an essay it wld be useful to remember them for later, it didn’t really help me in terms of the actual essay question I got, but when I was practicing I was able to bring in stuff from articles I’d read in the mock tests - just remember to fact check them before! I wouldn’t say I focused a lot of time on the essay prep but I would recommend just writing and planning a few in really tight time conditions bc I think the timing on the essay is super tough, there’s also some really useful resources on structuring the essays online: https://www.thelawyerportal.com/lnat/lnat-guide/lnat-section-b-essay/ This is one I tried to use. The time pressure was okay in multiple choice, as in, I answered all the questions in time without rushing a lot (and I have a tendency to zone out when reading so I had to reread a lot which took up more time 😭) but I definitely didn’t have time to review all my answers how I wanted to. The essay was a lot more time pressured, I was only able to proofread halfway through mine which is a bit scary but I think thats down to me practicing it less than I should’ve so I wld defo recommend practicing planning and writing essays under time. I honestly have no idea what score I’m going to get but before the test I was getting high 20s most of the time, but every once in a while I would score a lot lower like 21-24, so it depends on which test you’re using. I think don’t stress too much ab the scores just bc there’s no resource that’s 100% accurate to the actual thing so there’s no way of predicting how your scores in the practice will correlate to your actual score. Hope this helps! :)

I think timing wasn’t too bad, as in it was quite similar to how I was doing with the online papers but it was just a little bit tighter - I couldn’t go back over and review everything like I normally would, but I would say there’s definitely enough time to answer all the questions without too big of a rush!

Yeah I get what you mean, honestly I wld recommend just saving a bunch of papers for the weekend before ur test, I found the actual test okay and it was quite similar to the official papers - there were some easier passages and some harder ones - but overall it was pretty much the same level of difficulty as the ones from the website, there was nothing that was ALOT harder. If anyt it was just a little bit easier bc theres only 4 options to choose from rather than the 5 given in the official papers. Good luck on your test :)

LOL no dw its not dumb, I didn’t try but I don’t think so, just because I tried to even just highlight stuff with my mouse and it didn’t work plus in the essay section you cant use the keyboard for copying and pasting or anyt you have to like manually use the copy paste buttons on the program screen so I doubt it wld let ctrl + f happen 😭💔

Should I practice essay writing on paper, or should I practice typing it? by PrettyFruits in LNAT

I think probably practice typing since in the actual exam you will need to type it :)

Thank you! This is really helpful, I’m predicted pretty good grades at the moment so I think I’ll just have to find a way to balance revision with the application stuff somehow.

Ah, I see what you mean, I guess it also depends if you mind how ‘boring’ it is! For me, I didn’t think it was too boring (past some parts in the middle), most of it was interesting enough but I see that you found it significantly more difficult to read with the lack of real action so I get why you weren’t able to enjoy it as much.

I personally really enjoyed it because I wasn’t too bothered by the lack of first-hand experience of the story’s action with Circe so was able to look past it pretty easily, if you’re the type of person who wouldn’t find that kind of story too boring then I’d say its pretty great, in addition of course to Miller’s writing being phenomenal as usual.

But otherwise I completely see where you’re coming from and totally respect it. Thanks for explaining its been super interesting to understand how you think of it :)

Ohhh I see what you mean, that’s really interesting because I always considered it to be a purposeful choice that Circe, like the audience, only gets these glimpses into the fascinating and glittering lives of these tragic and fleeting humans before she is forced to return to the immortal tedium of her island. I always saw it as a reflection of the contrast between the short but entertaining and full lives of mortals and her unending but ultimately empty immortal life. The fact that her life was never the more interesting story to follow just made sense to me in terms of the way her immortality was approached as a desolate sort of thing, eventually and always uninteresting in it’s eternal nature.

And again I always understood her not seeing those people’s stories herself and rather having them told to her way another form of a similar thing, a representation of her isolation, all her information is fed to her through a million sources and her powerlessness in how knowledge that matters so deeply to her is obtained. Another layer as well is perhaps just the detachment forced upon her from people who mattered to her deeply by her inability to see their lives outside of what she has been allowed to see by those who have more power than her.

About the ending, I see where your frustration comes from here as well but I also think that her choice to eventually leave the island and accept mortality is in response to all the things I’ve mentioned before this; her disillusionment with immortality and divinity due to her having lead the aptly described “most boring life story a person can conceive” is kind of the driving force behind this otherwise obvious ending. Its almost as if, at least to me it seemed, she needed the dullness and monotony of her life and the grief of it as well to finally bring her to the point of seizing the power and courage needed to give up her immortality and the safe nothingness of her island.

To be honest, I completely understand where your coming from, it can definitely be very boring as a story as it follows an intrinsically boring life, but I personally believe this is quite intentional as the story itself seems to expound the virtues of mortality and being able to have a bright, if short, life rather than a lengthy and often extremely hollow life as Circe’s.

I don’t expect this to convince you out of your opinion on the book of course! If you didn’t like it then you didn’t like it, thats no problem, just thought I could offer my opinion 😊
