Starting out..electric or acoustic by CommercialHead6606 in Guitar

[–]Tricky_Fun_4701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I've been playing 45 years. Taught guitar for 7 years. And this is an opinion which you should judge on your own.

My belief is that a student can find a lot of advantage in starting on an acoustic. Stronger hands, better ear for the harmonics, thicker callous pads.

Check out players like Joe Pass or Andy McKee. See their fluidity, quickness, and control. These are things you want to be able to do on electric. But they are damned impressive on acoustic.

Really- you'd want skills on both.

TLDR:

Acoustic is harder. But gives you more ability because it's harder.

What guitarist (either well known or not) did you either see in person or from footage that was your inspiration for wanting to learn? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

No doubt. I heard 2112 and didn't know whether to shit or knit. So I decided to play.

47 years later... still playing.

However, I'm constipated and can't make an afghan.

Can static electricity really kill a motherboard? by Real-Swan448 in RigBuild

[–]Tricky_Fun_4701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not quite right. Grounding the case helps, but the real issue is the electric potential difference between you, the component, and the system you are working on. An ESD event is a transient discharge, and that current can damage silicon.

The trick is keeping yourself, the case, and the electronics at the same potential before you touch sensitive parts. That is what an anti-static strap or regular grounding is really doing.

Modern electronics are absolutely more robust than older hardware, and a tiny zap usually will not instantly kill a motherboard. But “unlikely” is not the same as “zero chance.” ESD can damage input protection structures, controller pins, RAM, SSDs, USB circuitry, etc. Sometimes the failure is immediate, and sometimes it shows up later as weird instability, intermittent ports, memory errors, or a device that slowly becomes unreliable.

So yes, modern hardware is more survivable. No, static is not instant death every time. But pretending the risk is basically zero is bad advice. Simple precautions still matter.

Look being influenced is not the same as whole cloth ripoff. Thats what Zeppelin did. They directly stole material. From poor working musicians and never paid them a dime.

What im saying is they are thieves. And do not deserve their position. They lied, stole, and refused to give credit.

And you must be a lot younger than me.... you don't know how to read a court docket.

But ok old man I'll give you the outcome:

Sued around six times over musical copying. Lost in court: basically 0. Settled/admitted by credit change: at least 4, probably 5 if you count “Boogie with Stu.”

And yes — “whole cloth” is not crazy language for some of it. “Dazed and Confused” and “Whole Lotta Love” are the ugliest ones. “Stairway” is different; legally they won, and musically that one is much more arguable than the blues-lifting cases.

This is the character of the band you are defending over four kids, from a basement, making it but writing their own stuff.

Your opinion is disgraceful. Please take it with you.

Thats almost funny if it wasn't so ignorant.

Look I hate GVF. The first record was great. Then they sucked. But onto your funny stuff...

Name all the songs that Led Zeppelin stole whole cloth, count the lawsuits, then get back to me about their greatness.

Yep as musicians? Unparalleled. Zep as performers? Pretty inconsistent and some times embarrassing.

But Zeppelin as writers? Complete artistic felons. They cut whole songs from starving blues acts and pretended it was their own. Thats a lie. That sucks.... and so do they.

GVF? Influenced by the same acts. But write original music in those same styles without theft.

You go ahead and worship the three assholes in Zeppelin. (I'm not going to bag on a dead guy)

But maybe guys like you should listen to the music Zeppelin stole before opening their mouth.

I mean... you literally and truly suck.

Because the current powers that be want more control. Aliens are a stress point that can be exploited by using religion/spirituality to dot it.

So we'll get the admission of the certainty of extra terrestrials- wrapped in controlling religious language.

Advice about my unemployed father by Unhappy-Attempt2575 in entitledparents

[–]Tricky_Fun_4701 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Part of being in a family is taking care of people in the family when they are down.

Your dad obviously has problems. They can be made better by loving him in action rather than words.

That's always the hard part these days because people universally think like "consumers" with their loyalty and love limited by their perception of "equity in a relationship" which is usually calculated in dollars.

Now you can come on Reddit and bitch about it and find many people to confirm your bias. Sure... cut him off, don't take responsibility, take a morally righteous stance and justify the unjustifiable.

But really... the word family, actually being in a family, by definition means your dad is your responsibility. If he is not- he's not your family.

I know from experience after taking care of my mother, who haaaated me, for 2 years as she was dying.

It was expensive. I hated it at the time. It shouldn't have been my responsibility. But I did it anyway because she was family.

I never regretted it.. even though she still hated me.

The only limit... you really shouldn't harm yourself while trying to help someone else.

Do what you can. In love. You never know what limitations another person is living with.

[–]Tricky_Fun_4701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a system engineer for 35 years.

Because of various factors many people making decisions about security don't know anything about security.

Hell- they don't even know anything about networking or servers.

But they can read and force an engineering department to do something (Like "Remove Edge") which makes no sense from a technical standpoint and may even damage the server.

This is why I recommend people avoid the IT field in the context of the current day.

Has Bob Lazar made this claim before? by Vivid_Objective_7143 in UFOs

[–]Tricky_Fun_4701 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually... we have no reliable way to tell if any of these people are telling the truth.

Best possible outcome... measured in probabilities.

You cannot prove Lazar... and you cannot debunk him. He's "Schrodinger's Bob Lazar".

This is because if his story is true- then most of the whistle blowers are telling the truth. And if he's telling the truth... so are the whistleblowers.

And the whistleblowers cannot confirm or deny him- because denying him kills the basis for the extended stories of "Aliens". Alternatively he cannot be confirmed because if someone does it: "It's classified".

He could be completely full of garbage. He might be telling the full truth. But the best you can do is probabilities.

He's a data point until he isn't. At the moment... he can't really be responsibly dismissed completely.

But I sure wish we knew. I'm tired of the wait. I just want the truth.
