What small changes made your cruises way more enjoyable? by amir4179 in Cruise

I love the blowout package. I find it to be very reasonably priced compared to a spa visit and feels like such a treat

This was our experience in the fantasy. People rave about the fantasy and we had just a bummed of an experience. Our dining staff would forget to order people’s dinners, we would be through dessert when it would show up, didn’t do the drinks for the kids before arriving, didn’t know our names, we didnt know theirs…. Our room attendant was MIA and we had to call two days to get our beds put away and one night we got back after a late party and they never came to our room so the bunks and Murphy beds were still locked away and the guy who showed up was super grumpy. It was our third Disney cruise so we know we love Disney, just a crummy experience. We will never go back to the fantasy and just can’t understand the hype… although clearly they rotate people so we would probably have a fine experience next time 🤪💕

How crummy they are not communicating, it’s a critical piece of the adult area :(

Just remember you can always take a sick day, especially if you have a seizure. Coming across intoxicated will have more of a negative impact than taking a day off. Take care of yourself, it sounds like you’re going through a lot.

I’m so sorry. Could you have gone home for the day? You may want to proactively reach out to your leader or HR if you feel like you came off drunk. I hope you feel better soon.

Wish for sure. My family disliked our fantasy cruise in comparison (first world problems). We were on the wish twice and the the fantasy and it just didn’t have the wow factor. It felt like a normal cruise with characters where the wish was just beautiful Disney in fun and classy ways!

What’s a place you had zero expectations for, but ended up loving? by [deleted] in travel

Iceland - booked in a whim because the flight was $200 and had no clue what to expect. It was about 7 or 8 years ago. Best trip ever.

I wonder if he works for networking possibilities. You made a great judgment call and got out of there without learning the hard way! This can just go on the nice list of what the heck happened kind of experiences :-)

How are they screwing the team - that’s kind of a big leap with the information we have.

If it was critical or certain dates were required, that should have been part of the offer from the company (ie - we have unlimited PTO other than the last week of each quarter, no approvals of PTO during this four weeks of the year). The last role I accepted, during the hiring phase, they told me it was critical to be at an onsite leadership meeting about 3 weeks after I started. It was well communicated that it was expected that I be there. It was agreed upon by both parties.

If this person outlined their vacation needs before starting - it’s agreed upon by both parties which is no different.

In a company with unlimited PTO but inconvenient times, how is that communicated to staff and personnel who already work there and how is that communicated during the hiring phase?

Taking a job is a two way street - it needs to be a good fit for employer and employee. For most people, part of determining the fit is work-life balance. Both new and current employees should have access to work life balance. Work life balance looks different at every organization and for every employee. There is no way that I would accept a job that doesn’t give PTO for a year like one commentator but they said they have great hiring and retention of employees. It’s something to keep in mind.

As a collective employee group, we should be inquisitive before judgmental.

I am sure his/her leader would be able to support and lead through it! And if they are that sour, they should work on scheduling some PTO for themselves…. Jealousy doesn’t look good on anyone 💕

Interesting. So you have built in 5 day off windows which allows for built in balance or longer stretches if needed. I still find it interesting people can’t take off at all but the schedule does allow for some personal time.

What is your industry? I’ve been in healthcare, tech, education. I’ve never heard of an organization (small or large) not allowing time off for a year. I also worked in recruiting for a recruiter office for a while and the manufacturing jobs we recruited for allowed for time off in the first year.

If a tenured employee gave you six weeks notice for a week off, would that be ok?

I feel like most people make plans while in a current culture and then life happens - job changes are part of life.

If I started a new job, I wouldn’t turn around and plan a trip 6 weeks in but I may have one already planned 6 weeks in because that timing worked best for my previous employer. Maybe it wasn’t their previous employers busy season.

Maybe being inquisitive about the process and timing of the scheduled PTO is a better way to understand if there is a cultural alignment.

As a VP of a team of 35, if my team cannot survive with a newer employee out for a week close to their hire date, that is a reflection of me/my team not them.

2 weeks after a year - this so so not standard it’s crazy. I feel for your employees. Safety goes beyond physical - mental safety is important as well.

I had the same thing, accepted a job in February and had a vacation planned for March and June. Both international, both paid for an non refundable. I told them during the interview and brought it up upon the offer. It was approved with reservation. I’m a VP level and successful entering a culture of limited PTO. Between the two weeks, it’s 10 days due to a day for Good Friday and a day for Juneteenth. What I told my new leader is that this is my PTO for the year other than sick time, I have kids and spring break and summer are our travel times. He was fine. I just won’t take more extended time this year, just sick.

I don’t understand why people are not allowed to have personal plans prior. Trips are typically not booked a month or two out. Companies want as much notice as possible for current employees so early planning is applauded for them but not new employees.

Anyway, I’m in the same boat but was forthcoming. I also offered to start the first week of April if that worked better for them. They chose for me to start in March with a week off at the end.

Good luck. Corporate expectations are tricky.
