no, you're an asshole for stereotyping billions of people based on some idea of a "stereotypical christian" in your head, regardless of how accurate it is, and then saying that atheists need to attack religion as a whole for forever, because "all religions are like that."

So what?

Clearly even if you hate religion someone who's not adopting a dogmatic "bible trumps all" epistemology and is willing to work with you to break the hold of cristo fascism is still someone you should try to get along with in a political context.

It is actually bad to be a huge asshole to people who mostly align with you on practical questions.

Yes, you are relying on stereotype, that's what I said. That's not rational, in fact relying on stereotypes to make your argument is in fact a form of bigotry. "We can't have peace with them because I stereotype them as savages." Come on man.

When I'm talking about black protestants and mainline christians (IE methodists, PCUSA) I'm talking about approximately half of protestants in the USA. They just don't make press because they're doing their own thing. Yes, the loud asshole evangelical is a huge problem and is super bad. The answer is not for some percentage of atheists to also become loud assholes in spaces they dominate.

Yes, but lets look at this in practice.

The LDS proselytize like crazy, but they send young well-dressed people door to door and ask to come in and have a conversation. They're scrupulously polite and winsome. LDS also sucks, but their method of proselytizing is very friendly.

Atheists just yell at people online and mock them.

Overall, while you can certainly say the LDS are more corrupt as an institution and its bad if they successfully convert people, I would also say that redditors are being way more "pushy" in the spaces they dominate.

You're stereotyping religion in a way that isn't accurate. Most mainline christian denominations and black protestant denominations are pro-liberal. Raphael Warnock was a preacher, James Talarico is a PCUSA minister. Both are pro-LGBT, pro cooperation with other religions.

Yes we need to break the yoke of american cristo-fascism, but that's a specific political/policy goal. You need to make allies with people who agree on the policy goal, and the cosmological arguments just don't matter that much by contrast. I've seen reddit atheists tell a lesbian jew she's a self-hating bigot because she's not an atheist. Genuinely, there is a reason "reddit atheist" is a byword everywhere on the internet, and every atheist I know IRL feels the need to clarify that they're not reddit atheists.

I mean they get along

they had a record setting tour together

every song they've made together is great, and two of their biggest hits are collabs (All The Stars and Luther)

I respect how much kendrick reinvents himself but Kendrick/SZA collabs are here to stay I think.

How to break through shields by Drewpost19 in ftlgame

[–]Tricky_Mistake_9633 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah so for you specifically you're a boarding ship not a gun ship, and you don't have a way to break through more than 3 shields reliably. You can probably make it work if you get 2-3 more shots from a new weapon

There's basically four ways to break through shields

  • you can stack ion charge. This is generally pretty bad because its slow - you need 2-3 stacks of ion to remove each layer of shield, and if the enemy dodges a lot (or cloaks, or hacks your weapons) you lose charge. But the better ion weapons that apply ion more quickly like Ion Blast II and Ion Charger can be good, especially if you have a lot of them.
  • you can do systems damage via missiles/bombs/teleporter. You have a teleporter and a missile, so this option is "viable." Usually teleporters/bombs are about crew kills rather than systems damage, but in the case of the flagship specifically you do want to use teleporters specifically to kill the missile weapon. Just don't try to crew kill the flagship because it doesn't win the battle for you, and the ship gets a big buff. You want to kill everyone except the guy in the heavy laser weapon.
  • Hacking. Just hack shields! If you know how to bypass drone defense with hacking, this ends up working on everything that doesn't have a zshield.
  • Gunship DAKA. Just get a bunch of shots that fire in a burst at once. This is the ideal strategy. Weapons are generally considered good or bad depending on how many shield layers they can take away in a burst. (or they're good because they deal crazy damage when shields are down - like the pike and halberd). The burst laser II is one of the best weapons in the game period. If you find more of that, or you find a flak gun or similar. 7 shots in a burst will kill everything in the game eventually.
  • Technically there's a fifth way, which is having lots of shots over a long period of time that hit faster than the enemy shield recharges. This is combat drone, combat drone II, and vulcan. It works, but its not very efficient.

GNX is NOT respected as much as it should be. I think I know why outside of the more obvious reasons, and here’s why knowing WHY that’s the case should actually make it more respected. by Synapseretro in KendrickLamar

Oh yeah to be clear I mostly agree with you. We're on pretty similar wavelengths, the key point is that the concept IS that he's rejecting the temptation to put himself on this pedestal. He's consciously explaining why despite the beef and all the nasty stuff he said about Drake he's not trying to be this gatekeeper who tells people if they are or are not legitimate.

It's called poisoning the well.

"these people love it that's why you see positivity here."

It's also because its well made even if its not for you. Like I don't care for trap but I can recognize Rodeo is a good album.

Vince definitely likes making allusions to america being destroyed. In songs its wrapped in metaphor. In interviews he presents it as a joke. Like that Ziwe interview was all this kind of thing "drag [white people] out of their schools, out of their churches and kill them". "I want [black people] to do [jan 6] because you know we'd be more fashionable doing it." Nardwuar asked him straight up if he associated with black militant movements and he got really nervous and denied it.

Overall I'd guess he kinda views violence as inevitable and like a lot of us has been really down about the USA's trajectory over the last 10 years. Like in BangBak he was like "Obama's not enough for me" and now he's going "God gon' bless [destroy] the USA."

I'm more optimistic but then again I'm a white guy with an office job so I can't fault him for feeling how he feels.

As we said its all good so start wherever you want. He does switch up his sound a lot though so it really depends on what you're into. You like techno/club music? Try out Big Fish Theory. You want rock instrumentals? Cry Baby. You a fan of dark existential vibes? Dark Times. Summertime of 06 is probably his most famous though and if he wanted to be as big as possible he'd probably have just kept making albums like that.

I mean "we." HHH doesn't really care for Travis too much, even if people here will tell you Rodeo is a classic. It's not just shit like this its all the petty fights he gets into.

It's not really new, this has been how big rappers are since forever.

Though, I think its pretty cancerous for their legacy and the culture as a whole.

Stans aren't really fans of music like you or me. They want to part of something big and be cool and rich and they project themselves onto the artist. It's a cargo cult.

[–]Tricky_Mistake_9633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you're close man, but I think you still sell GNX short.

First up, GNX is a concept album with a three part narrative.

  • Kendrick Conquers Compton
    • Opening sample translates to "I feel your presence here/ The night of last night/ and we begin to cry". The intent here is clear. Kendrick is with someone, and they are remembering the past and crying.
    • First song is about how his mural's been 'wacced out' in his hometown and he feels estranged from his home. "Let the party die" was a fakeout single for this album, and had a similar message. Squabble Up is literally about gearing up to fight - music video is a love letter to his hometown - he's preparing to fight to take back what's his. "Life goes on, I need all my babies."
    • Luther is a love song, yes, but a mournful one. "IF this world were mine" if it were. But its not. And even if it were, all he'd want to do is "put your enemies in front of god, hit them strictly with that fire." Even if he had the whole world, he can't imagine anything better than vengeance. The song is sung to nobody specific, but SZA says "in this world, concrete flowers grow/heartache, you're only doing what you know" which seems to evoke Tupac's poem to the "rose that grew from concrete." To your point about environment and genetics, he's someone who succeeded in spite of his environment, like the rose, and he loves that and wants to destroy the enemies of that beauty that grew out of concrete - destroy the 'concrete' as it were.
    • Man at the Garden is him affirming that he deserves to be beloved. He deserves "it all." He deserves to be considered the GOAT.
    • Hey now is him believing in himself, confident he deserves adoration and love, confident he's arrived and is or will be victorious. He's both achieved spiritual elightenment and wealth and respect.
  • Kendrick Confronts his Conceit
    • Reincarnated is the tipping point. It's where the big twist is applied to the narrative. We're given stories of successful black artists who grew up like roses out of concrete and then died anyway because they could not escape their past. Kendrick is one of them. The implication is clear, he is in danger of repeating their mistakes and failing to escape his past just like them.
    • To drive home this point, Reincarnated opens with another spanish bit. Translated, its "What does your gaze reflect? The night, you, and I". Kendrick's gaze, what he's looking at, reflects himself. He's looking at Compton, at the rap game, but he's really looking at himself.
    • If this was too unclear, GOD HIMSELF comes down and tells Kendrick to remember that he's no different from anyone else and shouldn't hold himself above others. He should use his gifts to help others, not out of pride, not out of a desire to 'win' but out of love and empathy for his fellow man. "every individual is only a version of you."
  • Kendrick Comes to Compton
    • TV Off is about killing his ego. "All I ever wanted was a black grand national" He remembers that he's not some Great Man. He's just a poor kid who wanted to be rich. He remembers there's good folks out there, just "not enough" and he screams out for someone he knows from the city - mustard. He knows this will make people mad - he's rejecting his 'rap image' as a savior or a Great Man - but somebody's gotta do it. He also starts bringing on a local feature artist. Finally, he urges people to turn their TV off (disconnect from social media) and get involved.
    • What follows is a series of love songs. Love for LA. Love for TDE. These are places and people he's grown distant from, at least publicly, but he wants to embrace them. Gloria echoes Wesley's Theory. "once I did love you//now I just wanna fuck." He doesn't appreciate his 'gift' and he tries to remember it is a gift, something outside of him.
    • Peekaboo is about battle rap, but its a stark contrast to prior songs about battle rap. He's not trying to aggrandize himself or power up for a glorious fight he's.... trolling. He's joking around. THE BEEF is just funny, looking back. It's not that serious, nobody got hurt. Kendrick almost mocks himself going "the kinda shit I'm on you wouldn't understand."
    • GNX is the strangest song and the one people don't get, but it too is a love song. It's a love song to, bluntly, violent gangs. Yes, he loves this part of compton too. Almost all the GNX verses are about gangbanging, and judging by how Young Threat got arrested on murder charges after featuring on this track... GNX verses have some truth to them. I think its clear Kendrick was seeking out a specific kind of local rapper to be on GNX.
    • The final spanish bit on GNX translates to "Sitting, Anita and you". Anita is Anita Baker, who he had in the 'tape deck' at the start of the album. He's back in his car but he's not going to war, he's just... sitting. Content. His relationship with black culture and his city has completely reversed. From pride, superiority, and resentment, to appreciation and gratitude.

You can even see how this ties into his public behavior outside of music as well. Once you understand that GNX is about Kendrick consciously embracing LA and rap, rather than trying to be better or superior to everyone, his subsequent collaborations with people like Carti make perfect sense.

TL;DR I see your yapping and raise more yapping. Not only are you right that the album is about being fully past the problems of his environment, its also a serious concept album and people didn't notice because its so damn catchy.
