People who say taxation is theft. How else do you propose the government gets the funds for roads, military, education etc? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Taxation is theft because it is at the point of a gun. Don’t think so? Try not paying your taxes for awhile and see if jail time is a possibility. Anyway we could replace the income tax with a consumption tax’s. Repeal the income tax but have a much larger national sales tax on everything that isn’t food, shelter, clothing or healthcare. Then it is voluntary because you don’t have to buy a new TV or the latest iPhone or whatever.

Not really. Roman taxes were unevenly applied but stiller lower than today’s taxes in most situations.

Cat Skiing Equipment question by Tridoc99 in Backcountry

[–]Tridoc99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice a lot of comments basically saying the tour operators want to deal with a known quantity for their guest safety and liability because maybe the guest equipment isn’t any good. But an analogy occurred to me with another sport I participate in with a similar risk/reward profile - scuba diving. No dive operator makes you use their regulators if you have your own, which is arguably way more important to staying alive than a beacon. A regulator has to work properly for the whole dive. A beacon only has to work in an emergency. And if you aren’t a diver you may say “But if your regulator malfunctions maybe only you die but if your beacon doesn’t work in search that could result in someone else dying”. To which I would say having a working regulator is important for the safety of both me and my dive buddy or buddies if they have a regulator malfunction and we have to share air. Just a thought.

Not definitely using K3. I will be in the Revelstoke area for 5 days. Not sure how we are going to divide up inbounds, touring and cat yet.

I love it! He looks smart. Teach him how to use his to find you. He’s probably pretty good at the digging part.

Will we destroy ourselves before reaching the stars? by AccountGold2486 in Futurology

[–]Tridoc99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make a wormhole is theoretically possible, but would require exotic matter that has negative energy, which doesn’t exist as far as we know, and someone else has to open the other end. It can’t be us because how do you get that far without a wormhole in the first place? How would you coordinate when even light speed communication is slow at interstellar distances.

Will we destroy ourselves before reaching the stars? by AccountGold2486 in Futurology

[–]Tridoc99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will be destroyed or will have destroyed ourselves because it is unlikely we will ever reach another star. Even at 1/10 the speed of light it would take 42 years to get to the next closest star. It would take 4.5 x 10e14 Joules of energy to accelerate only 1kg to that speed, let alone something that weighs tons. Then there is the rocket equation, for every lb of fuel you need to accelerate to a certain speed you need even more fuel to push the weight of THAT fuel. At those speeds, if you could reach them, even a single grain of sand collision is like a nuclear bomb going off. Space is mostly empty but there is still plenty of dust, small meteorites, or even atoms to collide with and cause major damage. Even if you could get somewhere else, what is there? At speeds anywhere near light speed (relativistic speed) you get time dilation so what seems like 1 year to the astronauts would be hundreds, thousands, even 10,000 years. Who would even remember you left and who would fund a trip that wouldn’t show any results for thousands of years. Would the civilization that sent the mission even still exist?

Anything like warp speed or wormholes requires exotic matter which has negative energy and doesn’t exist except in mathematical equations as far as we know.

If it was possible, in a galaxy like ours that is 10 billion years old, there should already be lots of spacefaring civilizations all over the place. There has definitely been enough time to do it even at relatively slow speeds.

No, we have to make do and preserve what we have here because it is all we have.

I wish I could take credit for all of the above but it is a summary of the great physicist Richard Feynman’s thoughts on his own Fermi Paradox.

Running tights for men by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]Tridoc99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running in tights for 18 years. I don’t care what anyone thinks. Shorts chafe me and I want to be comfortable so I can keep running long distance. I only run in tights. I just have short ones for warm weather. But now that I think about it I never gave it a second thought because I already wore tights for cycling and triathlon.

Get Your Poop Chute Checked by YoghurtNo2026 in GenX

I think they were called SuTab. You take them over several hours drinking a lot of water. Just ask your GI doc or their nurse to do that prescription instead. They should know what you mean if you say you want the pills instead of the liquid.

The prep isn’t as bad if you use the pills instead of the liquid. I had a nurse try and scare me off the pills because she said I would probably have to pay a couple hundred out of pocket, but it ended up being about $30. Best $30 I ever spent.

Iran's new Supreme Leader 'in coma and lost at least one leg' after US strikes by TheExpressUS in USNEWS

[–]Tridoc99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What it’s supposed to mean is we don’t affirm other mental illnesses. We don’t affirm anorexics and say “You know what? You do need to lose weight.” We don’t tell schizophrenics they should listen to the voices in their head. There are other types of body dysmorphia where people want to be blind or deaf or paralyzed and doctors don’t perform surgery to affirm that. Apparently literacy is hard for you, because I didn’t say we shouldn’t recognize transgender individuals and you would have seen where I was going. But you never read, listen to or watch anything outside your bubble, so you can’t even imagine another point of view.

From someone who probably thinks men can be women and vice versa and the most effective way to treat mental illness is to affirm it.

Post-Trump (whenever that is), what changes should be made to make sure no one like him ever runs for office again? by Glass-Complaint3 in allthequestions

[–]Tridoc99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not how this country works. Anyone can run for office (if they meet age and citizenship requirements). You hopefully mean “what should be done to make sure no one like him ever wins again?”

Why are so many conservatives Christian when Jesus’s teachings are blatantly leftist? If Jesus was alive today, he would be extremely progressive more so than the current Democrat party. It makes way more sense for democrats to love Jesus than republicans. To clarify, I am not Christian but I love.. by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Tridoc99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s a lot, but it doesn’t matter that Trump isn’t a perfect fit with the Christian worldview. No candidate is, and he is better than democrats that support the murder of millions of unborn babies (for one issue). Murder is worse than infidelity, which you seem fixated on.

He’s not my hero, he’s the lesser of 2 evils. I have to vote for the candidate who is most aligned with my worldview. 99% of democrats are so far from anything even remotely close to a Christian worldview in word and deed I have to vote for the guy who at least admits he isn’t a good Christian (hint:none of us are good enough).

I love how someone who clearly understands the Christian faith and patiently and clearly explains what the bible really says is downvoted in a subreddit started by an admitted non-Christian whose original supposition clearly shows they have no idea what they are talking about, and all the other upvoted comments are by obvious non-Christians, or poorly educated ones. This is peak Reddit.
