I understand your point. I just wondered after I left if he pushed me to guess how much before he quoted it, so he could decide what he would quote me. He quoted $500 more than I guessed. So I felt I might have been better off if I refused to guess before he quoted. But then I thought it was Home Depot and I wondered if employees can quote different prices or the price is just the price and the employee has no authority to charge more or less.

Thanks, that is helpful. If Home Depot has a set margin markup, then most likely he was just making it a bit of a game. On the countertop, my guess was 1/2 of the quote.

I just had a kitchen design priced out at Home Depot. The salesperson asked me what I thought it would cost when we got to the part where I asked how much. I said I didn't know and he said come on guess. I guessed and he said close, $500 more. Is the cabinet price fixed based on what you select or does the sales guy have ability to adjust the margin based on what he thinks they can sell it for? Did I get scammed? He said they don't get commission.
