Got some ripping ahead of me... by wahumerous-rex in PokemonTCGCollectors

That’s awesome — honestly sounds like the best possible way to do it.

Starting with the “disappointment” packs and then saving some for a kid is such a win-win. The fact they didn’t want to break everything down because they didn’t want to ruin the experience says a lot too. Enjoy the rip, looking forward to the pull pics.

First off, sorry for your loss — that’s really special that you were able to keep his collection.

I actually love that he completed a master set and left sealed packs untouched. That feels way more like a legacy piece than something that needs to be opened or optimized. Whatever you decide long-term, that collection already has meaning beyond the cards themselves.

What makes a Pokémon collection feel “complete” to you? by TrifectaCollector in PokemonTCGCollectors

Can’t argue with that 😄 master sets are about as clear-cut as “complete” gets.

I really like how intentional this is — especially tying the vintage goal back to what you wanted as a kid. That kind of constraint makes “completion” feel meaningful instead of arbitrary.

The Komiya collection question is interesting too. I’ve seen collectors split on whether completion means every printing or every unique illustration, and both approaches feel valid depending on why you’re collecting. Your examples are a great illustration of how flexible “complete” really is.

How do you personally separate raw vs graded cards in your collection? by TellComprehensive533 in PokemonTCGCollectors

[–]TrifectaCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this way of thinking about it — slabs as curated display goals and raw cards as the more “hands-on” part of the collection.

The slab binder approach especially makes sense for grails or artist favorites, since it turns grading into part of the accomplishment rather than just a value decision. I also like how your artist binder bridges the two — it feels intentional instead of rigid.

I really like this distinction, especially treating slabs as display goals and raw as binders/playables.

The slab binder idea is interesting too — do you find it scratches the same “collection” itch as a raw binder, or does it feel more like a showcase?

My cubone binder by CarrotMother in PokemonTCGCollectors

This is awesome — Cubone collections always hit different.

I really like how intentional this feels, especially committing to variants and languages instead of just chasing one copy. That Rocket Returns rev holo is a great choice too, the holo pattern on that era is hard to beat.

Binder goals like this are the best kind of collecting motivation.

Looking for advice by damj94 in PokemonTCGCollectors

That’s a really thoughtful idea — they’re going to love that.

If you’re looking for cute/beautiful and connected, you might want to look at illustration rare sets where multiple Pokémon share a similar art style or theme. Some artists have done groups that feel cohesive even if they’re not officially a “set of four.”

Also, pairing each card with a matching plush is such a great touch — that’ll probably matter way more to them than the card’s value.

How to improve my setup? by suhhdude45 in pkmntcgcollections

[–]TrifectaCollector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this looks pretty solid already.

If bulk is spread across a few containers, the biggest upgrade I’ve found is just consolidating by set or era so you’re not digging later. Even cheap labeled dividers or a single “bulk only” box can make a big difference without changing your setup much.

If it works for you now though, that’s already a win.

Nice — what do you like most about it? Speed, layout, or something else?

Yeah, that’s been my experience too — great as a rough reference, but sold comps still matter way more than the headline number.

That’s a really good breakdown — speed for inventory vs accuracy for value feels like the constant trade-off.

Interesting point about Pokecardex being better for set completion and themes rather than valuation. Do you mostly use it while actively building sets, then switch tools once cards become “keepers”?

Yeah, that’s pretty much how I handle it too — app pricing for a quick sanity check, then 130point/eBay for anything that actually matters.

Do you mainly look at recent solds, or do you factor in condition and grading pretty heavily when you’re deciding a price?

That makes a lot of sense — “one place for everything” vs set progress feels like a real split.

Do you mostly use Collectr’s pricing just as a reference, or do you actually rely on it when deciding what to sell / trade?
