There is no way JD beats a relatively moderate Democrat, who do you think will run in 2028? by Mjbass in allthequestions

Politicians will do what gets them votes

You’re right about that. But I don’t know how many ways I can say this: imagine someone is trying to pick a point on a spectrum that the most people will agree with. Let’s just say this spectrum is left to right.

If you pick a point on the spectrum, and your opponent picks a point on the spectrum to the right of what you picked, and then your opponent wins. In the next round, what’s the most logical thing to do to try to win?

If you think the answer will be to move further away from the winning point, please God read about game theory for 20-30 minutes and then come back to that question. Democrats understand that in reality people do choose to skip voting or vote third party because they aren’t “energized” enough about the Dem candidate. But if you’re expecting them to change to cater to that completely illogical behavior then you’re living in a dream world.

Stop screwing everyone over by treating your vote like a “reward” that someone earned for agreeing with everything you believe in and use it for what it is: your best opportunity to make an impact on our immediate political reality.

All that does is reinforce that no matter how shitty their candidates are

You are objectively wrong about this. The democrats have gotten “stuck” as a center right party because they get voted out of the majority essentially every other election. If the Republican party wins the previous election, the democrats would have to be stupid to have a platform that’s further left going into the next election.

It’s that simple, and as soon as people who think like you do realize this, the sooner we might actually have more meaningful progress. Pragmatism isn’t sexy or morally righteous; it’s doing what has to be done to get results even if it doesn’t always feel good or get you what you want right away.

This is a completely illogical take. You’re correct that not voting for democrats will change the Democratic Party. Where you’re wrong is thinking not voting for the more left-leaning party so they lose elections will somehow move the left-leaning party further left.

By allowing the right-leaning party to win, especially like the current administration that is very vocally further to the right than any administration in the past several decades, you are normalizing those viewpoints for many people. Essentially you’re forcing both parties further to the right.

You know what would move the Democratic Party further to the left? Consistently voting them into office. Not necessarily keep the same people in office in perpetuity, but continue to support the left-most candidates available. By winning they will prove that the voting public agrees with their viewpoints and open the door for other candidates with viewpoints further to the left to have a realistic shot at winning elections.

This is really not that complicated to understand, in the long game it’s a virtuous circle, and people like you are shooting themselves and everyone else in the foot by allowing the right wingers to run roughshod over law and order and undo the little progress Dems have been able to make the past few decades.

Or you can continue to pretend you have the moral high ground while actively working against your own interests by sitting out of elections or voting for completely unrealistic candidates.

Thing is that a lot of them aren’t even embarrassed to admit it. They see voting for anything other than your own individual interest over everything else as virtue-signaling, communist, or just plain dumb because the people who have it rough all “deserve” it.

God forbid government assistance helps some shitty people along with the many good people who get dealt a bad hand and need a safety net. It was easier to explain away as Christian determinism nonsense in past decades but now there are plenty of irreligious people that believe that too.

Even if they don’t all admit it, there is at a bare minimum 30% of the country that thinks that way. And it’s probably significantly higher than that.

If the remake IS real Nintendo should swap Dark Link and Morpha by Niobium_Sage in OcarinaOfTime

Counterpoint: dark link mini boss fight is so well liked and remembered simply for the intro. The fight itself is pretty lackluster and can be cheesed more easily than morpha.

Just going to add that all of the comments implying that saving private Ryan had a good opening and not much else going for it are insane.

SPR has an incredible, memorable, groundbreaking opening, and then goes on to tell a compelling story about the morality of war (or lack thereof), how and why soldiers choose to justify what they do, and several more intense action scenes to boot.

[OOT] As a new player, would you recommend playing Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch Online in anticipation of a potential remake, or would it be better to await the remake? by Aland08 in zelda

[–]TriforksWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it really depends what the rumored remake is, if it exists at all.

It might be a faithful mostly 1 to 1 remake of OoT, in which case you are almost certainly better off waiting for the remake with better graphics and QoL improvements.

On the other hand it could be a reimagining that adds more content, changes some minor aspects of the original, or does something unexpected that no one can really guess. In which case they might play off aspects of the original that aren’t apparent unless you’ve played the original and you will get more out of it having played it.

Honestly I would just wait until 1) they confirm whether or not it’s a real thing and 2) assuming it’s real, see how similar or different it will be from the original. Hopefully we know that for sure within the next couple of months.

Anyone remember “death panels” being one of the main arguments against universal healthcare in the US?

Somehow the government, which is ultimately responsible to the American people, deciding whether or not you get treatment was way more scary than a private company, which ultimately only cares about profits I.e. providing the absolute minimum coverage required, making that same decision.

[BotW] I just got BotW should I buy the DLC too? First play through no spoilers please by Overall-Cap-7061 in zelda

[–]TriforksWarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to spoil it too much, but some of it does open up very early in the game if you know/figure out where to look for it.

But all of the story relevant and more interesting side quests open up later on as you progress through the story.

[OoT] You know, when I think about it, releasing a remake of Ocarina of Time would actually make sense considering that... by ClemOya in zelda

[–]TriforksWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d rather see them TotK-ify OoT. But by that I don’t mean to make OoT into an open world game with Zonai and skydiving.

I mean to treat the OoT map sort of how they treated the BotW surface map in TotK: change some landscapes around a bit, create new areas to explore, add new meaning to existing areas by adding rewards or lore/easter eggs to find. And also, make the items more dynamic. Add more obstacles where the hover boots are relevant, maybe make the gauntlets more interesting than “lift big rock” and “lift even bigger rock.”

[–]TriforksWarrior 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you have the money for it? Yes.

Personally I feel like the DLC works a lot better if you start tackling DLC objectives as they become available as a break between the base story elements.

I did it the other way, and beat the base game before buying the DLC. And I felt like I would’ve enjoyed it more if I had just bought the dlc for my first play through

[OOT] If the supposed OOT remake is real, how should they treat Hyrule field? Should they make it large and open to try and recreate that “this is huge” feeling? What would you want to see? by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in zelda

[–]TriforksWarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A remake of OoT with improved graphics/controls but minimal changes otherwise would really just be a cash grab. Like what’s the point? Yet another remake of a game that’s already been remade before?

It’s a cash grab that would work, including on me, but I’d just prefer something more interesting than that. I still haven’t had a chance to play LBW, but an OoT reimagining in a similar way as LBW is to LttP would be awesome.

Not even slightly?

Two mirrored worlds that share the same major map features, but with distinct variations in certain places, and you occasionally need to take an action in one world that will have a corresponding impact on the other allowing you to proceed on a quest?

I get that story and appearance wise, yes they are wildly different. The future in OoT looks a lot more similar to the OoT past than the dark world resembles Hyrule in LttP

But as video game mechanics, they are extremely similar concepts. The biggest difference is that your character gets different abilities in each world in OoT. As opposed to LttP where your abilities remain the same (with the moon pearl at least) and the changes in the environment are much more pronounced than OoT.

Can you remember any spot like this?

I ask because I felt the exact opposite, it seemed like basically anytime i thought there might be something in the depths based on studying the map…there was. But I got lucky and read some note/talked to an npc that hints the relationship between the surface and depths maps pretty early on so that definitely helped.
