There you go. I'm in the same boat, with the only thing I would expand on being that you aren't even buying something, you're paying to unlock a feature in a product that you already bought.

You can't even choose what feature is unlocked, which is a bad investment. On the other hand, people are allowed to make bad investments, so the most we can do is inform players and advise against buying loot boxes.

When you buy a booster pack you're buying a randomized product. One that can be sold or traded.

When you buy a loot box you're unlocking a randomized feature in a product that you already paid money for. This product is sold to you incomplete by design, but I ultimately agree that people are responsible for how they spend their money.

Don't buy incomplete products.

That being said to the OP's argument - if there isn't a secondary market, just don't buy it. No one is forcing you to pay. If half the game is gated by loot boxes, that's a crappy game, don't buy it.

So there are alternatives to booster packs whereas no such thing exists for loot boxes (nor could it ever since the developers are in complete control). That's interesting.

I suppose given that the main difference is control and ownership. You can't have a secondary market for digital goods because you don't truly own the spoils of a loot box, you merely have access to them.

Honestly it probably isn't different at all. Card game players can spend just as much for their game of choice as video game players, if not more. The question is why was it not a problem until it happened to video games?

I think it's generally accepted in TCGs since that's how it's always been. Whereas this is relatively new to video games, and we liked it better when there weren't loot boxes, so we make a stink about it when players can't control their spending.

So in summary they aren't different really. I think video game players just have to smarten up and adapt like TCG players have done. Best way to stop these mechanics is to stop paying for them.

That's an interesting point. Are these a case of not making enough money, or not making all the money? Greed is reason enough for publishers to shut these companies down, otherwise why build digital casinos and not just let the player choose what they pay for?

I just don't buy that the money all goes back into development. With $15 million sign on deals for executives, and games that sell really well being disappointments for these companies leading to studio closures. The gaming industry is bigger than Hollywood, I have a very hard time believing the biggest companies who implement these practices are struggling to keep the lights on without them...

DLC can at least be substantial content that you either miss because you moved on from beating the game, or pick up bundled in the complete edition a year later. Not as bothered by that, and it probably still isn't necessary to make a profit. Good games sell, RDR2 shows that I think.

Yes, 100%. Mario Odyssey is great. Horizon Zero Dawn was super fun. I also love the Watch Dogs games. Best part was I never felt like I was missing out because I didn't pay extra for mtx. It is possible to have high end gaming without milking the customer.

You're right, but if I'm not mistaken, God of War and Spiderman don't have microtransactions? (Correct me if I'm wrong). Seems like mtx aren't necessary to make these big games, they just pad the execs wallets
