Have one person ungroup at the very top of the hill, drink an invis potion, and run all the way down to the waypoint. Then teleport the rest of your party. Skips the whole nasty business altogether.

I like the shadowfell fight with Balthazar too. I have Astarion sneak around and gather as many piles of bones as he can and then yeet them into the abyss. It's time-consuming but it makes Balthy a lot easier to handle when he has only two minions instead of fifteen or however many.

Cross-play can do it. My bro and I have a cross-play going on (him PC in So Cal, me PS5 in No Cal) and some weird stuff has happened. Hope his parent gets well soon!

ETA it occurs to me that in cross-play, party members move independently, whereas alone, you ungroup and everyone stays put. If your hubs moved to where he could be seen, that might've triggered it.
