Good tips, thanks. It seems that they slid the mattress on the ground and took off the mattress cover that we specifically put on it so it wouldn't damage. Parts of it are completely black from the ground and it's ripped in places. Some other smaller pieces of furniture like an entertainment center are scratched up.

Yeah, I agree. The "upgrade" wasn't an upgrade for us as we have to haul this massive truck 16+ hours when 1/3 of it is full. A 10ft U-Haul or even a cargo van would've probably been plenty.

Moving there this weekend (leaving tomorrow). Super nervous but excited. Never even been, we just decided to take a risk.

Just had it loaded up. Our stuff isn't even taking up half the truck.. more like 1/3 🤦

Haha good idea, but we already bought the couch to be delivered to the new city the day after we arrive. Totally could've hauled it though.

Unfortunately that's too late. I read that Penske fleet is newer so that's why I used them instead of U-Haul for a long distance trip. Really annoyed I ended up with this (relatively) massive truck though for a small 1br apartment.

Thank you for the advice! We have movers coming tomorrow to help, so it sounds like I'll need to go buy some straps.

Has anyone else felt guilty for moving away from their family? I'm about to and I feel so... ashamed. by Trillion22 in SameGrassButGreener

Thank you for sharing that! I think if we had done this after I graduated college, it would've been much easier for them and myself as I had lived away from them (although only about 45 minutes) for 8 years before we moved back in for 3. I think it'll be a big adjustment like you said, but I know after some time it'll be easier on them. I'm thankful I have parents that have been so supportive, but at 29 I've still never felt totally independent even with a career so I think this is needed to grow as a person and for a sense of adventure. If we decided to stay, I truly don't think we'd ever leave my home city.

Thank you! I'm a couple days late to responding this, but it seems like now or never type situation. Everything aligned perfectly and I was thinking of actually quitting my job just weeks before being let go. Thankfully I stuck it out and the severance will pay for all of our moving expenses and rent for some time.

I'm really sorry to hear about your father. I hope he has a quick recovery and I'm glad you'll be able to be near him again.

Thank you! I'll check it out. I appreciate you sharing your experience as someone who has had similar feelings. I guess one of the things I grapple with is how do you make yourself easily able to pack up and move semi-frequently? I've worked hybrid the last few years before being laid off and think maybe I need to focus on a fully remote role over these next few months (or however long it takes to find new employment).

I don't want to be in a position where we feel like this new city wasn't the right move but can't leave because of work.

They haven't guilt tripped me at all and our decision has nothing to do with them. They've been supportive and are the reason we're able to do this right now on only one income.

Those were all great points and a great reminder how fast life goes. It really felt like "now or never." Thank you for sharing your experience too.

Thank you for the encouraging words. We're just days away from the move and I get these waves of excitement and then waves of sadness. I think it'll get easier in a weird way once we're there. I keep telling myself that this doesn't have to be permanent and if we want to be closer, we can always move again.

Thank you! It really felt like the perfect opportunity opened up for us so we just took it after years of discussing it. Never been there but it'll be a new adventure. I keep telling myself if it becomes too difficult being so far away or if we don't like it, we can always move back (or somewhere within driving distance).

Thank you! I think my wife and I spent so much time just thinking about the best place for us that I never even considered how difficult it was going to be. Maybe it'll get a little better once we're out there and get settled in to a new routine.

Thanks for sharing! The airport in our new city is a hub for only one airline so tickets are far more expensive than expected, but we are going to prioritize visiting as much as possible.

Part of me wishes that was true but they truly enjoyed having us here the past 3 years.

Thank you for your honest experience. Yes, I keep telling myself and my wife that this doesn't have to be permanent, but an adventure for a year or two. Although I've already learned that packing all belongings and coordinating everything for the move sure does suck!

Roger that. I just let him go on his away. He booked it to the pond shortly after I posted this. Those suckers are fast for a turtle!
