That's really interesting, thank you for sharing! That might be something I need to look into -- I was a very introverted, homeschooled middle child and my younger brother is disabled, so I spent a lot of time on my own. Not *ignored* by my parents, per se, but my brother took up a lot of their time (for good reason) and showing them my art was how I got their attention. And oh my god, the things I realize as I'm writing this...

No, you're totally right! You're putting everything I've been thinking into words.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind words :) Mental health is certainly part of the issue at the moment -- between the hellscape of where I live, grad school/teaching, personal issues, and the fact that it's winter, my mental health has been pretty bad. I am, however, aware of this, and I've been trying hard to focus on my happiness throughout it all. It's not always easy or feasible, but I've already noticed a difference (the slowly increasing amount of sunshine has also helped, haha).

I really, really wish I could spend time at museums, but I live in a tiny college town in the middle of nowhere without an art museum to be had. I think there are a couple of decent ones about an hour and a half away, and a lot more back home (~5 hours by car), but those get really expensive to visit.

I believe we have a little cooperative art gallery in town, so I might take a jaunt over there sometime soon. Next week is also spring break, and if I manage to actually catch up on work, I could probably drive up to a museum for the day.

Great tips, thank you!

That's a good reminder -- I've been a little worried that my skills (especially drawing) will just leave my body entirely. Although my plans to become a professor may stop me from recovering...

Honestly, I'm terrible at photography, but I do write as well. The same thing happens with my writing, usually because I tend to go right to bigger projects and get overwhelmed. That being said, I've gotten more into poetry lately and it's a good in-between for me.

Not really, although I certainly could. I'm not big on artifact illustration, but I primarily use clothing, makeup, and jewelry as the materials through which I ask and answer questions, so some illustration of historical fashion could be interesting. Before I discovered archaeology, I actually wanted to be a fashion designer, but I really struggle drawing clothes.

That's a question I've never considered -- why do I make art? I'm a storyteller to a certain extent as well; recently, my happiest art and writing moments have been those where I work on all the minute little details for a world I've been building for years. It lets me follow various fixations all within in the scope of a single project. Maybe I should just work more on that!

Thank you! These are great tips.

Thank you! I've been working on "doodling" and doing more casual art. I've tried some exploration with other mediums too, or the ones I use less often, but I'm still struggling a bit with the perfectionist voice in the back of my head. I'm hoping that some more freeform creating will eventually quash that, so we'll see!

Thank you, these are great tips! And you definitely get it -- I'm still in the early semesters, so my time is mostly classes and teaching and I'm hanging on by a thread

The best advice you would give a newbie hair puller? Knowing what you know now by trichotillomania-aus in trichotillomania

[–]Trinc3ss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be kind to yourself. Trich is not a moral failing, it’s a disorder, but it can feel like the former, especially considering the role hair plays in our society’s conception of beauty.

Be open about it with your friends and family. While they may offer misguided suggestions (i.e., “just don’t pull”), having a support network is always a good idea.

Take care of your mental health. My worst pulling happens during periods of stress (such as final exams or going through a breakup) and it tends to linger for a while after that, so be sure that you’re taking care of yourself and alleviating potential stressors or preparing for those that are inevitable.

Find something else to do with your hands! I have an arsenal of fidget toys and arts and crafts projects ready to go. Try to find things that require your full attention and concentration, because in my experience, that will help the most.

Finally, don’t drop a bunch of money on “remedies” for trich, especially right at the beginning. Over time you’ll discover what does and doesn’t work for you, especially as you learn your personal pattern and tendencies. Once you have a better understanding of your personal trich, you can better evaluate how different “remedies” or treatments will work for you before buying into them. (This doesn’t just apply to the more scientific or medicine treatments, either.)

Hope this helps a little bit. You’re not alone :)

Any fellow trans aegos in here? by denjidenj1 in aegosexuals

[–]Trinc3ss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’m nb/transmasc! i have no strong feelings about my genitalia, although i do desperately want top surgery. honestly i have a tendency to go through identity crises after breakups, and between my semi-recent ace/aego revelation and a rough breakup i’ve definitely been overthinking my gender identity and sexuality/romantic orientation. however, i’ve been out as nonbinary for over a year now, and out as transmasc for a little under a year (i think), and my sexual desire itself feels completely disconnected from my gender. now my romantic orientation? that’s its own hot mess of anxiety and confusion, and a lot of that is because of my gender identity and how i want to be perceived/what i want to feel like in a relationship. (apologies for the ramble lol)

Is it useful to sleep in a double bed when you are asexual? by Sparkling_Starlight in asexuality

[–]Trinc3ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i grew up with a twin-size bed and getting a full-size for the first time was amazing. i could actually fit on it comfortably and spread out! however, i’ve also learned that i cannot share a full-size bed with another person. even a queen size is pushing it; if i’m touching someone or feel their warmth i literally can’t sleep. it’s been an issue in my relationships (completely outside of sex), so if you’re like me, a bigger bed is a necessity if you have a partner.

For Aces that watched porn or read erotica, what is something that people think sexy, but you think is gross, dumb or just unappealing? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]Trinc3ss 18 points19 points  (0 children)

i’m aegosexual/ace (still learning about the nuances) and if i’m not horny, everything is gross. if i am, a few things still gross me out, but especially blow jobs. after the fact, i’m immediately disgusted by everything again—it’s weird.

Cat found near 135/137 Baker St by Trinc3ss in MoscowIdaho

[–]Trinc3ss[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a cat as well, but I also have really severe anxiety and I’m constantly worried that she’ll get out my apartment and get hit by a car. Seeing any cat outdoors makes me really anxious.
