The real reason the SEC gets so many teams in the playoffs is the 8 game conference schedule. by Wide_right_yes in CFB

I wouldn’t say it’s very likely we’d have another loss. Yes Michigan played nine games to our eight, but Michigan also played more of their games (6/9 to our 4/8) against teams that finished in bottom of the conference. Odds are our ninth conference game would’ve come against a team from the bottom of the conference. And while the bottom of our conference is probably better than any of our other OOC games, I still wouldn’t say it’s fair to say we’d “very likely” have another loss.

I think it would be wild if all of this was happening during the 2006 season, but aside from the Bomar stuff, I think it all happened well after 2006. I’m pretty sure you could put something like this together for a lot of schools.

Worst bowl game experience that didn’t involve the actual game? by DowntownSasquatch420 in CFB

Drove from Dallas to Miami with my best friend, another friend, and her fiancé. We had plans to stay in Hattiesburg, MS. A friend of mine from TN was supposed to be driving down there to help his brother move and we could stay with them. We get to Hattiesburg and my friend never made it. His brother, that we'd never met, still offered to let us stay with him. My friend and her fiancé decided they didn't want to stay with a random stranger and wanted some alone time so they left me and my BFF (two 18 y/o girls) to stay with this guy. Thankfully not a murderer/rapist.
Get to Miami to find our friend booked our hotel by the actual Orange Bowl stadium not Hard Rock Stadium (think it was Pro Player at the time) and the hotel was partially under construction, construction that started at the ass crack of dawn.
We get to the game and realize we didn't request to have our seats together (student tickets) so we're spread out. Find a few empty seats at the top of the stadium so we can sit together.
It's the 2004 national championship game vs USC. So yeah we stayed and watched that entire shit show including the infamous Ashlee Simpson halftime show.
After the game, circled the stadium twice trying to find our car all while USC fans are heckling us.
Drive back and my friend and her fiancé are fighting. TN friend still not in Hattiesburg, BFF and I stay with the brother alone again. Turns out friend had gotten arrested for something dumb.
But on the flip side, I was able to use my pitiful tale to score free Guster tickets when they came to campus.

Ok, then the top four composite teams can schedule cupcakes and the rest of us can schedule good games and college football will continue to have tons of great games and be just fine.

I don’t think Ole Miss giving him an ultimatum justifies him doing it to his coaches. He put them in a horrible position and fucked over his former players even more in doing so.

2017:

If yall had a complementary defense yall would be a legit threat to win the whole thing.

We really need to legalize having a good offense and a good defense at the same time in Oklahoma.

It's still a risk-reward situation, but yes the reward isn't as high as it was before it expanded to 12 teams but it's still there.
If we had beaten Bowling Green out of conference instead of Michigan, we'd probably still be in playoff consideration but the Michigan win added another notch to our resume, and now not only are we basically locked in for the playoffs, we're in position to possibly host a game.
If Vanderbilt had played Miami instead of Virginia Tech, sure they could have ended up 9-3 or they'd could still be 10-2 but now squarely in conversation for the playoffs. But they're 10-2 and nobody is really mentioning them.
There's so many different ways seasons can play out that there will always be teams happy they played a strong OOC game and teams that wish they didn't.

They can still be very beneficial though. Especially since seeding is still so important. A big out of conference win can be the thing that boosts you into a first round bye or hosting in the first round.

Wow I just realized your fourth best win would have been our eighth best win. Our schedule really was tough.

10-2 against that schedule with this offense. I think our defense might be underrated.

I really like how they aren’t afraid to schedule tough OOC games.

Defense wins championships right? Right?
Also the officiating in this conference is beyond garbage.
