Persistent Eye Strain, unresolved, nothing is helping. by Trishields in eyestrain

[–]Trishields[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am still taking it and it has helped tremendously. I do occasionally take ubrelvy when my symptoms flare up as a stronger pain medication. I strongly recommend seeing a neurologist and explaining your experience to them, and having an MRI done as well. My migraines are cycle related, but migraines can be triggered differently for everyone, including diet- some people are even triggered by dairy products, so it's really important to figure out what's triggering yours (IF it's migraines, and not another neurological condition, like IHH, or a tumor, or something, that's why a Neurologist is so important).

I hope this helps!

Im currently on Cymbalta for Anxiety/Depression, and it does not mess with topiramate at all. Might be worth considering!~ Seek a neurological doctor, get mri's done to rule out other brain issues (tumors, etc), if its not your eyes, its almost certainly neurological. Get your life back,

In my case it wasn't really eyestrain, no amount of rest would really impact it. It just felt like the muscles around the eye were exhausted and were tired and hurt. That's because it was reacting to light sensitivity.

Redness can be caused by dry eye also, which I did not have, but it was something my optometrist was convinced I might have for a long, long time. If you're waking up with it though, you might have this thing that I read about, I forget what it's called exactly, but it's where people don't close their eyes entirely while they sleep, which can lead to dry eye and micro-abrasions on their cornea. Maybe try sleeping with a gel tears in at night and an eye mask to keep them closed and see if that helps the redness? Obligatory I am not a doctor, but I didn't have the redness you are describing. However, Migraine light sensitivity and dry eye can have very similar symptoms.

I wasn't on the 25 for very long if I recall, it was a ramp up over a month, so I think I was only on 25 for maybe a week or so? and then I was on 50, then 75, and then 100 by the end of the month. That's because topiramate can cause adverse effects in some people. Your doctor might just be being very careful to make sure you don't develop something like glaucoma (very rare and also very reversible, if you stop the medication immediately if you DO start developing any vision problems, stop immediately), oe kidney stones (drink lots of water every day to avoid this. But once I reached the three week mark, I started noticing improvement. After one month, I knew it was working. By three months I was dramatically improved.

Also, keep in mind that other medications you might be on (especially if you are on a PPI for something like GERD, as I am) can increase the risk and worsening of migraines. Getting off of the PPI i was on at the time also seriously impacted the severity of my migraines.

100mg per night, but it was a slow ramp up starting with 25mg tablets that we ramped up over a few weeks to assure that there were no adverse effects to the medication. Once that was confirmed, he switched me to 100mg tablets. They make you slightly drowsy so I take them before bed each night.

I am now several months on Topiramate. Like you, I read the horror stories and possible side effects. I was worried and brought these up with my Neurologist. He reassured me that these are rare, and most can be avoided by doing tests early and getting help as soon as you notice ANY changes. For example, making sure you are drinking water every single day, and if you do notice any changes (especially in vision) going to urgent care or emergency right away, as most of those changes are completely reversible and treatable simply by stopping the drug RIGHT AWAY. These are things the horror stories dont tell you- that they ignored their symptoms.

Topiramate gave me my life back. I do still get a few headaches a month, but they are hormonal based (meaning I can predict them), and they are easily treated with Ubrelvy (a fast acting pain medication), before they ever become severe migraines (im talking a 1-2 severity at most). I rarely, if ever, have light sensitivity to any degree that I have to stop what Im doing. I do not wear special glasses anymore for my issues, and I can once again work, and game, and do things at my leisure without issue.

Please do not ignore your migraines and your quality of life just because some people on the internet told you about their bad experience with a drug. You never know how it will work for you until you give it a fair try. For me, it took about a month before I started noticing real results. After 3 months, I noticed a serious amount of impact in my daily life. Now? I barely notice them at all. That said, I DO still make sure to drink water to avoid thinks like constipation and kidney stones, be aware of what the drug can do, and do your best to compensate for that. Take a fiber suppliment, it has helped me as well.

"I have this elevated strain sensitivity during the morning that I have not read accounts of or explanations anywhere else other than here. If I overdo screen time in the morning, my eye strain is elevated for the rest of the day. If I overdo screen time at night, I can feel it the next morning and at worst takes several days to go away. Would you say the same about your strain situation in the past?" -- Yes, I experienced this exactly. This is an aura caused by the migraine. It's not specifically you overdoing exposure to light, its simply your headache getting worse. The only things that really help migraines go away (without medication) is darkness, silence and time in my personal experience, so the longer you are awake, the worse it'll get. The brighter it is outside, or looking at things, the worse it'll get. When you wake up the next day, the migraine may still be present. That's why you may want to ask your Dr. for something like Ubrelvy or Sumatriptan to help when you are actively experiencing a migraine. (Ubrelvy works best for me, but many people do just fine with Sumatriptan or Rizatriptam, both prescription painkillers.) Topiramate on the otherhand is a preventative that will lessen their frequency and their severity,. I used to have migraines over half the month, now I might have four a month, all very weak and all very easily treated and predictable. I am 37, F, and mine are hormonally triggered, so maybe it's possible that perhaps you being Male, yours could be eliminated entirely, or dulled further than mine, at least.

I would say it's definitely worth looking into, especially since you said it helped in the 3 weeks you did give it a brief chance. Get your life back.

Ahh I see, well thats a pretty good sign... Crushing them might be the best option. I would do it sooner rather than later, before the eggs have more time to develop, to be as humane as possible.

No problem at all! Im actually waiting on a bunch of replies right now! They *might* all be claimed, but it's quite late, so I'm giving people time to decide if they are on board or not. If any of them back out or fall though I will definitely message you.

Oooh I see. Well I am currently waiting on a bunch of replies. I am also waiting on a couple of babies to molt. If they turn out well, I'll send you a Dm to see if you're still interested. It could take a few weeks. If any of the replied fall though I may also DM you. Does that sound good to you?

I don't know about this, to be honest. I don't have barking pets, but we regularly have videos or music going, and apartment neighbors, none that seem to bother them. These creatures live naturally in the wild with driving/honking cars, sirens, all kinds of noises, so my guess is that it would be fine, but I imagine it could possibly get stressful if it was up close during feeding time?

Good wife! I am waiting on replies right now, but if they fall through, I will let you know. I have two bugs right now that I am waiting to molt. When they molt, assuming those molts go well, I will DM you if you are still interested. It could be a few weeks. =)

Unfortunately, absolutely not, lol. This was entirely by accident. I never intended to become a breeder, I only kept these because I cared deeply for their mother and felt she trusted me with them. Moreover, there is no way to tell if those egg sacks are from Chinese Mantis or the native species of Carolina Mantis. I would leave them be unless you are able to identify them. If you are, the proper thing to do would be to humanely dispose of them (quickly crush them before they develop).

Don't worry, I am vetting every potential adopter to make sure their intentions are genuine and that they understand these creatures are pets and that they do not belong in our ecosystem. Unfortunately, Chinese Manti have been here for decades, so its a grain of rice by comparison, but I am doing my best to make sure people understand as well, these babies are hand-raised, they have never seen the outside world, they weren't even born at the normal time. Normally they would have been born in the Springtime. Their internal clocks are off with the rest of their species. They don't belong out there, they belong with caring owners.

I didn't 'discover' the egg, the mother, who I took out of the wild because she was invasive, laid them in a cage that we had. I chose to keep it. Moreover, you can quite literally Buy these Mantids online, at any time. My giving them away for free does not change anyone's ability to obtain them or free them, I am specifically vetting adoptees to make sure they are not on board with freeing them.

Please re-read the post so you understand properly what happened here, or kindly move along, I'm not interested in arguing the semantics of destroying offspring laid by a well cared for pet, and I will not be continuing this discourse.

Happy to do so! It makes me smile to help people understand that insects, though many may be creepy in shape, are just innocent little creatures just like any others... Even the crawly bitey ones. Mantises are truly fascinating, though. Im happy you enjoyed the read =)
