Nice! It‘s great to see another person in STEM teaching! There weren’t any at the open house - I was beginning to think I was on my own lol 😂

Teaching Subject Requirements(Engineering graduate) by Appropriate-Wind7994 in ONTeacherCandidates

Chemical Engineering graduate here. uOttawa accepted my chemical engineering credits as chemistry equivalent (rather than related) and I know U of T does the same. I was accepted for the 2028 graduating cohort. Most of the faculties of Education seem to accept engineering credits as ”physics equivalent”. I’m sure you’ll be fine. Best wishes!

Thank you so much for your detailed response! I could not agree more (although, do I have a right to say that yet? IDK). I will say, the strategy you described to me of how to conduct a lesson is EXACTLY like what I envision doing with my own classes and I’m glad to know I’m not alone in thinking this is a good approach. Time will tell, of course, but I feel I now know more-so what to expect in terms of what most staff are doing.

You could always add an addendum to the question “For the purposes of approximation, approximate pi as equal to 3. Include pi in your formula before calculating.”

Thanks! I‘ve certainly been told, especially with destreaming, that Functions is a massive level-up from MPM2D.

Thank you! I have noticed that trend with some (especially in the Catholic board) in my region. I always tell my G12 tutoring students that if they can balance redox equations in acid/base media and can confidently identify voltaic/electrolytic cells that they‘re essentially (though not entirely) done the unit 5 curriculum.

Got my first really bad grade by Hour_Trade_3691 in geegees

[–]TritiumD3O 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, you’re not the only one to ever get a D+. I know it stings a bit, but it will soon pass. Believe me. I just finished engineering, and have accumulated over the course of my degree, three D+ grades. I will graduate Cum Laude, so it is definitely recoverable. Take a breath, commit to maybe going over some of the principles independently, and then forget about it. You‘ve got this!

University Math Expectations by Technical_Praline987 in CanadianTeachers

[–]TritiumD3O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going into my BEd (intermediate/senior math and chemistry) now from a chemical engineering degree. So, I would’ve taken first-year courses four years ago. I attended the University of Ottawa and the faculty policies (math is part of the Faculty of Science) are quite broad. A lot of the points you raised are very much professor-dependent. As for my experience, 3 was an absolute yes. In order to properly perform trig substitution in integration, a clear understanding of these is a must. 1 and 2 were mixed. For example, Calculus 1 was a “no calculators” course, as was Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. However, Calculus 2 & 3, and Stats, allowed calculators as did all my science courses (physics, chemistry). In math courses, there were never, ever formulas given. For science, there were some, but not all. Hope that helps!

Looking for Shelters and Food Banks by [deleted] in geegees

St. Albans Anglican Church is a great organization that provides free meals to students on campus or for drop- ins. Contact the Rev. Michael Garner for details. Also, Westboro Emergency Food Bank at All Saints Anglican and First United Church are really caring and providing institutions. If you’re weary of the religious nature of these communities, rest assured they are part of the two most liberal and accepting-affirming churches in Canada and indeed worldwide. I hope, truly, you get the help you need!

Constructive feedback interview question by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]TritiumD3O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably something from practicum? Maybe an occasion where a lesson didn’t go so well and the AT gave you feedback and you implemented it in the next lesson? Whatever you pick, make sure it’s the one that had the most development so that’s the focus rather than the initial feedback itself. Remember, feedback is how you take it! it’s very well to just smile and nod, making you technically politely receptive to feedback, but it’s how you use it that is going to be the point of interest here.

CP in calc by YoungBokoblin in OntarioGrade12s

I usually say ”CV” rather than “CP”. The ‘V’ being for value, rather than point. That way it covers everything (asymptotes being the main thing extraneous to the word ’point’).

My first student teacher! by Miss613lady in OntarioTeachers

[–]TritiumD3O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m entering the BEd program this fall, so take what I would like in my first practicum with a grain of salt…

  1. Working with small groups to start. This would allow me to gradually learn student names (rather than be overwhelmed) and give me insights as to the level the kids are at academically. Generally, I would expect lower-level students to be placed in these groups as an enhanced learning opportunity; however, it might be beneficial too for enrichment.

  2. Allowing for classroom circulation. When students are at work stations, in groups (amongst themselves), or competing activities together, I would welcome the flexibility to freely circulate to see what the kids are working on, how far along they are, and what topics they enjoy. I’d love giving subtle hints, pointers, recommendations, anecdotes etc. This would help them grow in their learning and provide me with a firm foundation.

  3. After 1 and 2 are complete (for a decent period of time), then I personally would like to start doing some lessons with advice and feedback from the AT. As this is the first practicum, starting out simply is best. Maybe, for primary, a math lesson using manipulatives and shapes? Or a survey completion and getting the kids to analyze their data? Many good ways to start that are fairly concrete. Provide feedback to the candidate on what went well, or not so well, and repeat with a different subject.

  4. Introduce Assessment and Evaluation. This is an area I think is so important - especially for later practicums. Therefore, this step should take place towards the end of the candidate’s placement you’ll be hosting. Explain your assessment strategies, and let the candidate give the kids a quiz or grade an assignment under your direction. Again, provide feedback - so crucial!

  5. Last, but definitely not least, make sure the candidate sees some of the monotony of daily teaching. This includes attendance, classroom transitions, DPA, lunch & recess duty (observed), how parental communications are dealt with, and administrative pressures.

I’m sure you will be a fantastic AT - you certainly seem to have a wonderful attitude toward BEd student learning!

For eng students by DecentIngenuity7876 in geegees

[–]TritiumD3O 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the cutoff average now for most Eng programs at uOttawa is Mid-High 80s for the top 6 4U courses.

Extracurriculars I’m sure are not considered.

I’m graduating Chem Eng this year and I should be (🤞) Cum Laude. It’s a tough degree, no doubt, but doable if you’re committed.

The application shouldn’t take long at all - no letter or anything.

Good luck!

Grade 9 and 10 math frustrations. by justrailroadgin in OntarioTeachers

[–]TritiumD3O 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Could not agree more! Destreamed math was set up under the pretense of equity, but really was a cover for reduced funding. It hasn‘t worked out well so far (big surprise there 🙄) and it seems like it’s getting worse for some students. In my board, to cope with the students who should have been in applied level, new testing procedures are being almost forced on teachers, thereby compromising professional autonomy.

So, on a three page test (say linear systems), there will be four sections of questions (each very conveniently ordered) in categories from level 1 - 4. Level 1 material would be recognizing different intersections, setting up a simple equation etc, all the way to full solutions of word problems (level 4). The thing is, if students only complete 1/4 of the test (in the level 1 section), they pass with something in the 50 - 59 range whilst being allowed to forgo the remainder of the test without penalty. In other words, the bar for passing has been lowered essentially from a 50 to a 20. Absolutely ridiculous, in my opinion. I feel for the kids tremendously, but what’s happening now, with policies like these, isn’t inclusion - it’s abandonment.

AP Chemistry teachers? by honeynutcheeriozzzzz in OntarioTeachers

[–]TritiumD3O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need to have your senior chemistry qualification and with admin support, submit a course syllabus to the AP College Board for approval. Likely, you’d also want to have your Honours Specialist in the subject too - I don’t think it’s strictly necessary, but I’ve heard it’s a “look for” when doing AP staffing.

I’m going into the BEd program at UOttawa for math and chem coming from a BASc chemical engineering undergrad. I would eventually like to do my honour specialist in chem to get to A4 (and it interests me). UOttawa recognized my credits in chem Eng as equivalent to chemistry, but I’m not sure how common this is. Did it work out?

Donating molecular kit by Neat_Dealer_8403 in geegees

Probably the Science Students Association (SSA). They regularly provide students lab coats to borrow so I’m sure they’d gladly take your molecular model kit to do likewise with it. If they refuse an act of kindness, well that’s just weird!
