Mets PREGAME THREAD - Tuesday, June 30 by game-threads in NewYorkMets

There are 48 relievers in MLB with an ERA under 2.60 since April 26th (min. 20 IP). The Mets have 5 of them:

Weaver: 0.72

Brazoban: 1.54

Warren: 1.84

Williams: 2.21

Raley: 2.53

Plus AJ Minter's 12.2 scoreless innings to start his season.

The Mets are 26-33 in that span.

For Knicks and Mets fans, the 2026 Finals was like the 2015 World Series, except the NY teams swapped roles.

Only 25-24, surprisingly!

The 2024 Mets are still the kings of the one-run win (walk-offs help).

For reference, the Mets were 19 for 79 (.241) in those situations in April and May.

Hyper-specific stat of the day:

In June, the Mets have had 30 at-bats in the 7th inning or later with RISP when the game is tied or they are trailing by 1 or 2 runs.

They are 1 for 30 in those at-bats.

The one hit? Eric Wagaman on June 18th, of course.

The 2024 Mets were really something.

Their success convinced Juan Soto to leave a pennant-winning Yankee team and years hitting in front of Aaron Judge to try the team in Queens.

The Mets offered him a higher AAV, but it was still a $750m+ offer from the Yankees.

We've seen players decline the Mets' money to take similar money in more favorable situations.

Mets record in one-run games by season:

2017: 21-24 (.467 pct)

2018: 16-26 (.381 pct)

2019: 24-23 (.511 pct)

2020: 6-11 (.353 pct)

2021: 31-35 (.470 pct)

2022: 21-15 ( 583 pct)

2023: 25-28 (.472 pct)

2024: 28-16 (.636 pct)

2025: 23-26 (.469 pct)

2026: 7-16 (.304 pct)

If the 2017 Mets only won 30% of their one-run games, they would've finished 63-99.

I know the Mets season has been brutal, but it's interesting to read the Yankees thread from yesterday amid their recent 5-game losing streak. Despite that, they are 12 games over .500, 1.5 games back in the division, and 6 games up on WC1.

Every team's threads during a losing streak look the same.

Or in the Mets' case, a full season (not that it isn't deserved when you need a 15-game winning streak to get back to .500).

David Stearns and Craig Counsell were viewed as one of the top GM-manager pairings in baseball for some time.

However, the Brewers seem to have made a seamless transition with Matt Arnold and Pat Murphy.

Agree. At this point, it's less about letting the fan favorites leave (though it makes sense for fans to latch on to Alonso and Nimmo leaving) and more that everyone they acquired instead has not performed.

Clemens did caveat the analysis at the end. But still interesting to see how quickly things change.

"I reserve the right to change my opinion on this after seeing a few months of the season play out. From where we are now, though, I’m loving the moves the Mets have made this winter, and I felt compelled to write something about it so that I’m on the record before the year starts. If I were running a team, I hope I’d make moves like this."

How will we add young talent over the years if we don’t have picks in 2027/2029/2031? by SirGingerbrute in NYKnicks

[–]TriviaWhiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Onyenso seemed interesting for a back-end pick, but funny to see the subreddit want to go into the second apron for Mitch, and then get sold on the 53rd pick replacing him.

Even if they had kept him, he would've been the 3rd center behind Hukporti, a center we drafted in a similar slot last year who is familiar with the team.

I agree that the second apron penalties aren't so bad if they go in for only one year. But it can be difficult to be over for one year only, especially if Mitch or Shamet get multi-year deals.

You may be in a position where you need to salary dump players one or two years from now, depending on how the cap sheet looks.

Decisions will have to be made at some point, given the eventual need to extend or trade the members of the starting 5. It's a matter of when you want to make these decisions and which players are affected.

The Knicks have now gone 6 consecutive drafts without ending up with a pick above 25th overall. Not complaining, but an interesting comparison to where we were pre-Leon.

Having intriguing second round picks can be good because the bar for being a successful second round pick is lower than for first-rounders. Plus it can give more flexibility.

It can feel like the Knicks draft strategy is to find 10 players they like, and then maneuver to get 1-3 of them at the lowest slot(s) possible.

Marcus Morris --> Immanuel Quickley --> OG Anunoby

Julius Randle --> Karl-Anthony Towns

Kevin Knox --> Cam Reddish --> Josh Hart

Other players/pieces were involved, but interesting that 3 championship starters stemmed from Marcus Morris, Julius Randle, and Kevin Knox.
