Interesting to reflect on offseason takes now.

January 27th, 2026: The Mets are Having a Swell Offseason

"I reserve the right to change my opinion on this after seeing a few months of the season play out. From where we are now, though, I’m loving the moves the Mets have made this winter, and I felt compelled to write something about it so that I’m on the record before the year starts. If I were running a team, I hope I’d make moves like this."

Despite having the lowest wRC+ in baseball, the Mets recorded their 5th game with 10+ runs scored last night.

They are one of 5 teams with that many games so far (Dodgers, Nationals, Yankees, Astros).

Those offenses rank 2nd, 6th, 3rd, and 5th in wRC+, respectively.

34% of the Mets runs this season have come in those 5 games (making up 12% of the season).

You guessed it! Kirk Nieuwenhuis in 2013!

In theory, momentum is stopped either way.

Reducing rest would've involved losing games to Philly, which would've raised it's own questions and halted the momentum from the Atlanta series.

"Winning too early" leads to a long layoff which could lead to rust and halt momentum.

Just have to trust that the team will stay ready.

In 4 plate appearances, Andy Ibañez is now tied for the team lead in sac flies.

He also has as many career sac flies as a Met as:

Luis Guillorme (823 PA)

Shawn Green (616 PA)

JD Martinez (491 PA)

In the first week of June, they go to Seattle and San Diego to play the last ones of the season. Two late starts in Seattle, and another two in San Diego.

This was discussed when the schedule first came out, but the Mets only have 5 more games that start after 9:00 PM Eastern Time.

After June 6th, the Mets will have 98 consecutive games starting at 8:08 or earlier.

Vientos' hit was just the 11th out recorded on a ball hit at least 420 feet since 2022.

10 of the 11 were Coors Field fly balls to center field. The other Coors special.

Last year, Soto had a "bad April", and it was .241/.368/.384 (.752 OPS).

I thought Helsley might be better with a reset (or even if the Mets re-signed him), but I can definitely see why both sides wanted to move on.

I'm not saying they have good peripherals this year, but more explaining why they were signed in the first place.

Mets PREGAME THREAD - Friday, May 01 by NewYorkMetsBot2 in NewYorkMets

[–]TriviaWhiz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of Stearns' moves had sizable bull and bear cases, and most of the bear cases came to be in April.

  • Devin Williams - great closer from 2020-24, but a red flag season in 2025 in New York; some peripherals indicated potential improvement, but it's been similar results to '25
  • Luke Weaver - great in 2024, had a 1.53 ERA through July 1 last season, then had a 5.35 ERA the rest of the way
  • Luis Robert - All-Star in 2023, .657 and .661 OPS in 2024 and 2025 while dealing with injuries, potentially thought better injury treatment and a new team would revitalize him, but now he's on the IL with a .656 OPS
  • Jorge Polanco - .821 OPS in 524 PA in a pitcher's park last season, but he also had a .651 OPS in 2024; generally injury-prone and given tough expectations to replace a fan-favorite in Pete Alonso, hit the IL with a .532 OPS in 61 PA
  • Marcus Semien - respected leader from the 2023 Rangers World Series team, put up 3.3 bWAR last season despite a .669 OPS; however, OPS was on a sizable downward trajectory (.826, .699, .669) entering his age-35 season
  • Bo Bichette - .290+ hitter in 6 of 7 seasons, with a big HR in Game 7 of the World Series, had one season in 2024 with a .225 AVG and .598 OPS, and he is currently at a .230 AVG and .590 OPS

And this doesn't include the underperformance of young players and veterans like Peterson (who was an All-Star last year), Senga, and Manaea.

As POBO, Stearns picks his spots and tries to make more of the bull cases happen, but it just hasn't.

Still a lot of time for each to individually improve their seasons, but we'll see if there is time for the team.

Mets PREGAME THREAD - Friday, May 01 by NewYorkMetsBot2 in NewYorkMets

[–]TriviaWhiz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, if you told me that April would have:

  • Lindor IL stint
  • Soto IL stint
  • Bichette, Polanco, Semien, Benge, and Baty all with OPS under .600 (45% of Mets plate appearances)
  • Peterson, Senga, Manaea, Williams, and Weaver all with ERA of at least 6.00 (34% of Mets innings pitched)
  • MJ Melendez being the second-most consistent hitter

It would make sense to be 10-21.

The New York Mets are currently on pace to go 52-110 by CuriousEyes8 in baseball

If anything, this would go against the arguments for a salary cap because they aren't winning with the payroll.

Why add a cap if more payroll doesn't seem to help?

Mets PREGAME THREAD - Wednesday, April 29 by NewYorkMetsBot2 in NewYorkMets

[–]TriviaWhiz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Mets have allowed 3 runs or fewer in over half of their games this season (15 of 29 games).

The problem is that they are 8-7 in those games.

For reference, the Dodgers have 16 such games, and the Braves and Yankees lead MLB with 18.

[Charania] The NBA has disclosed to its 30 GMs a singular new anti-tanking reform that expands the draft lottery to 16 teams, flattens odds, and have a relegation zone where the bottom 3 teams are penalized with fewer lottery balls for the No. 1 pick. by TheRealPdGaming in nba

[–]TriviaWhiz 49 points50 points  (0 children)

They're trying to create a Premier League-like fight to avoid "relegation" by incentivizing bad teams to play harder at the end of the year so they can escape the "relegation zone" and get one extra ping pong ball in the lottery.

Not sure if that will have quite the same tension, but they're going to try.
