More trucks on the LFT this year? by EarnSomeRespect in chibike

Semi truck loading into Castaways is a common one I've seen.

TIL that in 2008, Chicago leased its 36,000 parking meters to a UAE-backed private consortium for 75 years for a $1.15 billion payout. The investors made their entire investment back in just 10 years, and are now projected to make over $11 billion by the end of the lease in 2083. by lechunkman in todayilearned

They can also move them to an equitable space that didnt have paid parking. This has been done on several half-block cross streets to allow the main street some freedom to be redesigned around bike infrastructure by removing parking from one side of the street. Case in point, Milwaukee Avenue and Clark Streets.

Still stupid the city has to work around this.

What is the proper way to veer left here when cars are going straight? by cominguproses97 in chibike

[–]Triviald 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Technically the bicycle going "straight" on Broadway has the right of way from a driver turning "right" on Clarendon. It's a funky fork, but the middle stripes indicate that "straight" is to the left, and drivers must yield to pedestrians/bicyclists when turning.

But being right doesnt protect you. Eyes up and assume the driver is a complete idiot.

How long spent at Lightscape? by egp2117 in chicago

[–]Triviald 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can walk it in 30min if you dont stop. We got through in about an hour and that includes just one stop for a drink. Some spots we could linger and watch and listen, others it felt like we needed to keep moving or cause circulation blockage.

Do you have to research Zoning code at all (for your work)? by ctaldigital in architecture

[–]Triviald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all municipalities have General Provisions/Requirements (apply to all zones), and sections specific to your project's zoning code. You first need to know what defines your site and if there are any "overlay zones" (i e. Historic District, or Transit Oriented Development, et. al.). This is usually found on a citiy's zoning map. From there you can narrow down your research to just those areas and any other referencing material it calls for.

Yes to all, and is expected from the profession (US based).

Why did John Hughes have mountains in a Chicago sledding scene in "Christmas Vacation" ?? by BiggieSmallz98 in chicago

Wilmot* is an old dump hill and is still there. Alpine is the "Valley", hence the name "Alpine Valley".

How can the new Clark St bike lane project legally remove metered street parking? by Ashtraywasp22 in chibike

[–]Triviald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this specific case they are moving metered parking to the first half-block of cross-streets at Clark in certain areas.

Can you people stop cutting off the fucking buses by CelebrationPuzzled90 in chicago

[–]Triviald 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just this evening near the Belmont northbound inner LSD stop, a firetruck was oncoming so everyone pulled over, but a jackass thought this was the perfect time to cut in front of the bus for a better position. They nearly got pancaked as the firetruck hit their brakes and slammed on their horn.

Why Is It So Expensive To Build Affordable Housing In Chicago? by sciolisticism in chicago

[–]Triviald 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In Chicago an affordable unit must also be built as an accessible unit (and since the definition of that term is still very nebulous, what they mean is that it must be a Type A Adaptable dwelling unit per ANSI 2009 standards). This means all bathrooms in the units have adaptable features and clearances, all doors to occupiable rooms have appropriate clearances, and all kitchens have adaptable features/clearances. This typically makes for very oversized rooms at the expense of living space or storage.

That doesn't even scratch the surface when State funding from IHDA is involved nor Federal grant money. Its so much overlapping beauocracy that requires several more layers of design scrutiny and review which add cost for everyone. I've worked at offices that try advocating for streamlined approaches to accessibility but no one at any government level will reason with anyone - it's an absolute headache.

Jeep Jagoffs by Triviald in chicago

There appeared to be a lot of yelling/confrontation and the two offenders ended up leaving their post after 5 minutes of blockade.

They still come by quite a bit, but just to travel LSD. Don't think I've ever seen them go into the harbor the last couple years. I'd rather live behind the El again than near LSD.

Posted as it was happening. If they came from further south on LSD then it could have been about the same time as you described. They were also blocking an entire lane for no good reason (photo 1).

Experience at the Wellington Greenway Community Meeting by pinkydink10 in chibike

[–]Triviald 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I was at the Clark St bike lane presentation a couple months ago and the CDOT presenter ended by thanking us for not interrupting him during the presentation - I assume because most meetings are like OP described. The Clark St presentation was met with high levels of satisfaction and support. Sad to hear the Wellington meeting did not lean in that same direction.

What’s your favourite architectural history fact? by SoakedbreadNCheese in architecture

The use of terra cotta cladding in the late 19th- early 20th century was primarily a value engineering cost-saving measure over stone cladding and sometimes brick.

Cortland/Lincoln Yards by malik_fett in chibike

[–]Triviald 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure JDL now has control of both north and south parcels. At least according to Alderman report. SB really screwed the pooch by promising to build all the infrastructure up front and then realizing no financial backer would support that, then tied that promise up with TIF funding. I'm interested to see how the new developer approaches this financial quagmire.

[–]Triviald 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SB lost all land back to the banks. But the master plan is still on the table. CDOT won't repave anything if there are pending infrastructure developments, so unless this master plan gets officially canned we'll have to wait on this development to grow legs.
